Are safes safe?

I know the cabins come with safes, and as we're sailing next week, I wondered whether to use the in-room safe for my jewelry, or is it wiser to use the safe deposit boxes at the purser's office (that is if Princess even offers these boxes to guests).

Has anyone had problems with the safes or had their valuables missing after using them? Thanks.

Advice I read somewhere if the safe uses a creditcard type swipe to lock, don't use a creditcard, use something else with a magnetic strip, like grocery card. If the safe has a keypad, wipe the keypad clean after each use. Don't use simple #'s like 1111. Consider changing it each day.

Don't ask me why. I use these precautions and have never had a problem.

I have never heard of anyone losing anything from their safe. The ones we have seen are small (a bit larger than a shoe box inside) but tightly secured.

We prefer the ones that are numbers only but you don't get a choice. It is what it is.

The ones that use a credit card will work with some mag stripe cards other than a credit card. We found that our Deltal Sky Miles card worked.

All of our safes on Princess (and Carnival too ) have had the keypads. One poster had a bunch of stuff (suspectedly) taken by a room steward, but I can't remember what line it was on. If you are concerned, you can always wipe the keycard clean after each use with a premoistened towelette so that your fingerprints can't be detected. And take Traveler's advice and don't use an easy code.

We always leave the good stuff at home, but do use the safe for money, tickets, and passports. We've never had any trouble...except how to pack all the stuff we eventually end up buying.

Happy cruising and Happy New Year,

Charlie

Yes unless you forget to lock them and walk away. Part of the rational for using a card (if it is the magnetic stripe ones) other than your credit card, is that if you happen to lose it, not a big thing and the purser's can send someone to open it up for you straight away, but better to misplace a delta sky miles card instead of the credit card. The system with the numbers is so random, just dont use as was mentioned all ones; twos etc but they do work great

Rationale for using random type numbers and wiping the keypad clean is so no one could get the impression on the keypad from the oils on your fingers, and be unlikely to guess your combination. If I have something that doesn't fit in the safe, I lock it in my suitcase. And I don't travel with anything really valuable to worry about.

I understand that the biggest source of loss from Cabin Safes are people leaving items behind. I personally found several pieces of jewelry once in our cabin, which I turned in, hopefully forwarded to the prior passenger.

The best idea I saw to help avoid this is to use a ziplock that you place in the Safe, rather than placing items loosely in the Safe. That way nothing disappears into a back corner.

Other than that, we've never had a problem with money or anything else missing from the Safe.

  • 5 weeks later...

We've been on many cruises and have always felt safe using the in-room safes. You make up the code for entry.

one wonders about the primary language of the person who wrote that article... it doesn't seem to be English... not to say that makes any of the points in it less valid, just that it was difficult for me to read... and BTW, there's nothing in the article about safes.

Huh  Did I read the same article as you? It was informative, straightforward and easy to read. Also, no grammatical or spelling errors that stood out to me.

Skeewe may have thought about being safe on a cruise, not in-room safes on a ship.

We've always used the safe in our cabin with no problems whatsoever. There was a time one of our family members thought their cabin steward stole an item. He was embarrassed to admit, when he got home, the item was already packed in another area, he forgot he packed it. I have a feeling the vast majority of cabin stewards will not steal anything, as it would mean their job. We've even inadvertantly left small amounts of cash on the desk and it's always still been there when we return.

I use a jewelry roll and always place my jewelry back in there, no matter how tired I am when we get back to the cabin.

The reason that you should wipe down your keypad after each use is because the oils from your hand will leave a shine on the numbers that you touched. So by seeing which three are shiny its just a matter of a few combinations before your money is gone. I just touch all ten after each use. Too bad that we need to do this, but all it takes is one.

yeah like others said, I would never take my " real " jewelry on a cruise.. even my wedding ring ,, i have a fake one I call it, that i wear when we are on vacation, so if i loose it , it was only 20$ so im not crying about if it was my real diamond..

as far as money ,, We dont take much cash with us,, we just get the money out of the ATM or from the casino the night before we are at a port so we can have it then,,,

We have never had a problem with the safe except for me forgetting the code. We feel totally confident in leaving our room and comming back to find everything safe. My In-Laws were concerned though last year when they went on their first cruise. The second day out my FIL was very aggitated after he came back from lunch, he was missing some of his personal items( tooth brush, paste, comb, etc.) I went in to help him look and found them in the mirrored cabinet. They did not know that the mirrors in the bathroom and desk ares popped open:p

I'm almost paranoid about leaving something in the safe. Even to the point of checking under the bottom liner:D

The ziplocks seem like a good idea.

Charlie,

I check under the bottom liner before I even put anything in it and always when I'm leaving, even though I use the ziplocks.

Found a $100 bill once when we checked in.

No, I agree with the first poster. The article sounded as if it had been translated from another language (like they typed it into the babelfish translator, and pasted whatever came up). The grammar and word selection in the article was horrible. It was understandable, but distracting and annoying.

I agree with the majority -- don't bring anything you wouldn't want to lose. I brought a bracelet, which had belonged to my great grandmother, on our last cruise and it fell off my wrist. I freaked out, figuring it was gone forever, but fortunately, my boyfriend found it in our cabin, on the floor. So, even if someone doesn't steal your item. Imagine if it fell off (like, when you're standing outside on the deck, and it's a bit windy, and it blows off, right in to the sea). Better safe than sorry, right?

Why are they named s a f e ??

NEVER had a problem !

CIAO,

I had diamond studs and pendant stolen from my hotel safe while out on a run early one morning. They were never recovered.

Safes are not always completely safe.

I now only travel with pieces I can bear to lose.
