Amalfi

We have hired Marcello for a full day tour from Sorrento. Our ship overnights there and then arrives at Amalfi the next day. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do in Amalfi, since we will have seen the coast the day before. Is Capri fairly close? I'd appreciate any information. Thanks.

Joan,you might want to take your coast tour from Amalfi as it is easier to get to Capri from Sorrento and then spend the evening in Sorrento on your return for shopping etc.. .Amalfi,Positano and Ravello are quite close to each other (it might depend on how much time you have in port in Amalfi) and can easily be seen in a day.

I agree with Mike. The ferries leave from Sorrento to go across to Capri and it is about a 20-30 minute journey. But then the drive along the Amalfi coast really starts from Sorrento and is awesome. You pass through Positano and on to Amalfi and Ravello.

 

Depending on your time in Amalfi, you could always catch a ferry back to Positano for a good look around.

 

We stayed in Positano a couple of years ago for a week and we used the ferries every day. You could also catch the ferry one way and return by local bus, which is an exciting experience. We had to back back over 100 metres when we were returning by local bus from Amalfi as a tourist bus coming the other way, could not get through, the road is so narrow, there was only enough width for one bus. I swear our back wheels were practically over the cliff!!

 

It is unusual to have two ports so close together. Enjoy whatever you do, it is a lovely part of Italy and the world.

Amalfi has quite a beautiful Cathedral, well worth a visit. The Valley dei Murini (Sp?) is a beautiful walk, reached through the center of town-it's where some of Itlay's finest paper was produced, and there is a fascinating museum didicated to this ancient craft within walking distance.

There's shopping, of course. Or if your guide doesn't take you to Ravello the previous day- you can easily get a bus from the port in Amalfi to Ravello, and enjoy exploring it-the gardens of Villa Cimbrone in Ravello are a delight.
