me&thekids Posted January 8, 2007 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2007 It appears there are a few zip lines in Roatan...which one is the best?
robertscj Posted January 8, 2007 #2 Share Posted January 8, 2007 I suggest the one at Gumbalimba Park which offers secure transportation to and from the park and depending on which cruise line often offers a combo tour. Gumbalimba Park (birds, monkeys, pirate cave tour, suspension bridge, gardens) and Canopy or Tabyana Beach and Canopy. bishop35 Posted January 9, 2007 #3 Share Posted January 9, 2007 Pirates of the Caribean is a great zipline. $45pp and it is well worth the money. It is strenuous but most people can handle it. It is not just ziplining but also has several bridges that are very tricky to cross. If you just want easy ziplining and don't want any exercise then this isn't for you. This is for people that want an adventure and don't mind sweating a little while you are having a great time. It also has a small rock climbing wall. We felt safe at all times and the crew made sure that we were safe. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/7495/web1fz8.jpg' alt='web1fz8.jpg'>[/img] http://boards.cruisecritic.com/http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/6286/web2bj8.jpg' alt='web2bj8.jpg'>[/img]
gltrans1 Posted January 9, 2007 #4 Share Posted January 9, 2007 We just did the South Shore Canopy Tour. $35.00 per person. We are a family of 5, kids are 15, 12 and 10. We all had a great time. Not strenuous and the guides were great. I would highly recommend it. ______________________ Carnival Triumph 12/23/05:) Carnival Valor 12/24/06:)
bfs2718 Posted January 11, 2007 #5 Share Posted January 11, 2007 We, too, used South Shore for 9 people rangeing from 12 to 59 in age. Had a GREAT time without tons of physical work. (Us older folks are a bit lazy...)
coltahonas Posted January 16, 2007 #6 Share Posted January 16, 2007 We went to the ziplining place Victor Bodden Tours recommended. Unfortunately I can not remember the name of it, but it is not near West End. It is closer to the iguana farm. I remember leaving the main road to go up a really steep dirt driveway to get there. It cost $45 per person and gave you 22 ziplines plus 6 bridges. VERY much better than what the cruise ship offers. If you go to www.boddentours.com you can ask Victor Bodden youself what the name of it is. It is definitely not the South Shore one. Upon recommendations from several cruisecritic.com people, we prearranged an english speaking driver and a van for the day with Victor Bodden. Definitely a great idea (many thanks to those at cruisecritic who wrote me about him!!!!). His tour desk is located just outside of the port gates in Roatan. EVERYONE there knows him. Very trustworthy, friendly and reliable. FYI- it was our first cruise and our first time to Roatan. It doesn't look like the photos included in this thread, either. bishop35 Posted January 17, 2007 #8 Share Posted January 17, 2007 http://roatancanopy-pirates-of-the-caribbean.com/ Try this link out and see if this helps. I am sure all of the zipline tours are fun, but they will vary some and some are more strenuous than others. This one has a good variety of everything, you will enjoy yourself. mayrashke Posted January 17, 2007 #10 Share Posted January 17, 2007 Jungle Canopy is the one we(46,48,15,9 years old) did. It was not TOO strenous, although we did NOT do one rope bridge crossing as my youngest was too short to grab the upper rope to hold onto. You can do a zipline there instead. There was a bit of more strenous stuff=climb a little rock wall-but it wasn't bad & crossing a couple of ropebridges. Ziplining was fun. Definitely glad we did it!! Would do it again!! P.S. No bathrooms at the end of Jungle Canopy place although they are building one. Not sure if there were any at the beginning.
Nebr.cruiser Posted January 18, 2007 #11 Share Posted January 18, 2007 We did the Pirates zipline in Dec. and enjoyed it a lot. It is pretty strenuous and takes some strength and balance. We're 60 & 61 and in decent shape and we made it; caveat; we did see two people injured on this tour. They had scrapes on their calves and one also on upper arms, I'm sure from slipping off the boards on the bridges and scraping against them. Relatively minor, but still no fun if it happens to you. The bridges were kind of tricky, but we'd do it again.

Actually...the thought of something in this world that is not completely sterile and safe is right up my alley (see signature). The potential for injury does not bother me, and my shins are criscrossed with scars from my pedals smashing them all the time, so that doesn't bother me at all. One additional question...and probably the most important...which one (of the 3) would you all consider the prettiest? I want to have a good time, but being up in the canopy like that....it's the overall experience i'm after. Which one has the best views? Best "in the canopy" feel, etc. Thanks
coltahonas Posted January 18, 2007 #13 Share Posted January 18, 2007 The Jungle Tour had you zipling IN the trees. You weren't in open spaces at all (ie- can't remember being able to see much of the sky, now that I think of it). The only way to describe this place that gives you 22 ziplines and some bridges and a small rock wall is that you are constantly in the "flora", "fauna" and "foliage". Please understand I am not one to normally use those words -- never thought I'd ever use those words. BUT there is absolutely NO OTHER WAY to describe WHERE these ziplines are. The jungle itself was so lush and green AND YOU'RE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF IT!
Giventofly Posted January 18, 2007 #14 Share Posted January 18, 2007 Wow....that sounds soooo cool. With the pirate one, the pics on the website...i dunno..they don't look as lush and tropical. I'm totally undecided now. anybody got more pics?
Nebr.cruiser Posted January 19, 2007 #15 Share Posted January 19, 2007 Since we only did the Pirates zip line I can't comment on the others. Pirates was very pretty, but I wouldn't say jungly. More forest with some partly open areas. We rode up a very steep hill which overlooked the ocean to the top of the zip lines. I do have pictures, but I've never been able to resize any pictures so that they will post on this site, despite trying several times. Maybe I could email them to you, or invite you to see them on Snapfish?

cruisinlawn Posted January 23, 2007 #18 Share Posted January 23, 2007 how do you get to South Shore or Jungle Canopy?
coltahonas Posted January 24, 2007 #19 Share Posted January 24, 2007 When you arrive at Roatan, walk off the boat and just as you leave the gated area you will see a little hut directly in front of you with "Victor Bodden Tours" on it. Let them know you want to go to the Jungle Canopy tour place and they will get you there. If you want to pre-arrange this, email Victor directly at: victorbodden@yahoo.com That's what I did. critic81 Posted January 24, 2007 #20 Share Posted January 24, 2007 How much was the Bodden Tours for just the zipline? Also has anyone heard of or taken the Canopy tour with TropicalRez. TropicalRez offers $75 tour with transport to Palmetto Bay Hill which is through Jungle Canopy. Is Bodden better? Any info would be great.
mayrashke Posted January 25, 2007 #21 Share Posted January 25, 2007 Victor Bodden's company is usually hiring a driver for the day to go wherever you want to go. They charge per person. We paid $25/pp. Then if you go ziplining you pay the ziplining company. Jungle Canopy was $45/pp. The driver waits for you wherever you go and you can leave stuff in the trunk of the car. He also tells you some info about Roatan, etc. Ben from Victor Bodden's company was EXCELLENT!!!!! Friendly, knowlegeable, etc. Would definitely like him for our driver if we ever go back to Roatan. If you just wanted to ONLY do ziplining and then back to the ship, hiring a taxi would probably be cheaper.....??? Ziplining is fun!! Have a great cruise.
