I am on the Norwegian Pearl right now, and I know there is a lot of "family" on board, but we've been going to the Friends of Dorothy meetings every night and nobody else is there. Do people not know what FOD means?

I think a lot of people don't know the phrase, and even fewer the acronym...it feels a little dated and male to me, anyhow (I'm more the "Friends of Mary Martin as Peter Pan" type...:D ). When we've asked for a meeting, we've asked them to include "LGBT" in the notice as well.

Last summer when I was on the X Mercury, there were FOD meetings almost every day, but they were either while we were in port or at dinner, so I couldn't go to any. I was disappointed, but at least they offered them!

My partner and I are hooked on NCL........we will be off on our sizth cruse, fifth with NCL October 20th, a TransAtlantic adventure. After +25 years together, two grown (and now out of college - no more tuition) children...we are good to go for lazy vacations.

 

NCL has been great, one of the first to hold FOD meetings....any one else on this cruise?

When we were on our cruises the FOD meeting were around 9:30 and at the pinao bar. Everytime we went to the FOD there was only straight people there. So we ended up just leaving there was nothing posted that it was a FOD meeting there either. Just a note in the onboard paper.

on our last ncl cruise, a repostioning *15 days* there were about 25 folks at the fod meetings, and we had a party in our suite with about 20 folks on the last evening of the curise (actually a few member of the crew snuck up and joined us - worked out great for them...we were in the owner's suite, and with this cabin you have a full bar set up, with a total of six top shelf bottles of what every you want, an two more bottles of mums, ..there was plenty left over and the crew happily took the balance down for what I was later to learn, a great party ... the cabin also came with a delightful gay butler. seems there are lots of ways to track down family on board. a number of years ago (alaska) we met a group of four men from maui...we've been in touch ever since, and while we have not been able to make it happen yet, we all check with each other when we book a cruise.....

Hello ladies! I'vee been MIA for a month or so. I had a wonderful cruise. We got engaged the day after my birthday :D Savanna surprised me with a beautiful ring. I couldn't believe it! We both loved the cruise and are looking to book another within the next few weeks. I hope all is well with everyone!

I went on the White Pass last May on my cruise to Alaska. It is the left side of the train on the way up (best time to view because the train goes slower). When you get to the top, you flip your seats over so that you're still in the same seat but now you're on the opposite side. If for some reason you can't get on the left side, you'll still be able to see the scenery on the way down, just take fast pics because the train won't slow for photo ops.

 

We were about 3 cars from the back and it was the best because the guy at the front would say what photo op was coming and we had time to prepare. We even saw a bear sh*tting in the woods. I kid you not. (Probably the only reason he stood still!) :D

 

 

I have a better idea than the train.....rent a car and drive. It is cheaper, the scenery is beautiful, you can stop at all kinds of places and you aren't packed in with a lot of other people. I've done it and would do it again.

we just booked a 15 day transatlantic (october 20th) on the ncl jewel. will be traveling to barcelona a few days early via ireland....any one else on board?

 

we've not yet booked a hotel in barcelona...any suggestions?

We are doing the TA in November on the Navigator of the Seas. Let us know about the Barcelona hotels. We will be departing from there next year.

Regarding the railway vs. driving, I have done the railway twice and I would do it again. The history lesson you get is fascinating. It's not just about the views, you get a great education on the gold rush and the experiences of people in 1898. Since that's what Skagway is all about - the gold rush is its claim to fame - I highly recommend the train ride so you can learn about the reason Skagway exists at all!

 

And sure enough, plenty of family on board, but never anybody at what our bartender called the "Dorothy Friends" meeting.

Hey, here I am! We got back LATE on Wednesday night, I had Thursday off and then today I went back to work. I can't say that I had a really outstanding cruise, it was pretty tough to have my mother along. I also discovered that I am not a fan of Freestyle Cruising (NCL)...it was too difficult to get reservations when and where we wanted them. I am working on getting all my pictures off the camera and onto the web, then I will work on my travel journal - I really want to get it done before I forget!

Welcome back! Sorry the experience wasn't all you'd hoped. I've never done "freestyle' NLC cruising. I've picked "Personal Choice" dining on our next Princess Cruise and I'm hoping I won't be sorry. I've always done 'traditional early seating" in the past. The 'Diamond' seems to offer many choices and the reviews are good.

Anyone want to join us on 3/2/08 RT to Hawaii from San Pedro, CA? We've booked the Crowne Plaza Hotel the night prior to sailing. It was so much fun this year on the "Island" that we just had to do it again. We've booked a "Mini" for 2008 versus a full suite to save some money. There are more sea days than on almost any other cruise other than a transatlantic...it's awesome!

Anxious to hear about everyone else's cruises this summer and fall.

Thanks to all of you for keeping this thread alive. I had no idea when I started it that it would become so popular. I wish I could meet each and every one of you (and sail with all of you all as well!)

We went to a Friends of Dorothy meeting on our last cruise and we were the only women in attendance. Like KL&KR, I think the name is a bit dated and VERY male. And let's face it...generally speaking, gay men are more OUT THERE than lesbians!

Hello Everybody

I just stumbled across this thread and was amazed to find it's been going since January! We were booked on the April 7, 2008 Sun Princess cruise from Sydney to San Francisco that Princess just cancelled. We are now totally at a loss and are so disappointed to miss out on this great cruise, but finding this thread makes up for it (well, maybe not totally :D ).

 

We are Carol 65 Retired IT and Linda 59 Nurse from Gig Harbor, WA. We have been together for 20 years so far with many more to come, we hope.

 

Since our April '08 cruise was cancelled we booked a 4-nite Pacific Northwest mini cruise from Seattle on October 15, 2007 on X Mercury just as a Monday - Friday getaway. Anybody up here in the Northwest want to join us? We did a 3-niter on the Mercury last year and enjoyed it thoroughly.

 

RVMamas - Wondering what RV you have for fulltiming. We have a Lazy Daze Class C 26 1/2 and plan to fulltime 6 months a year after Linda retires in 2 years 5 months (but who's counting :eek: ).

 

We would be very happy to meet some cruising friends. We would like to do an Olivia cruise but we just can't justify the huge price jump over a regular cruise, so having some sisters aboard would be great.

carol and linda....if you can find the time, you may want to look at NCL Jewel in October for a fifteen day Transatlantic - Bacrelona to Miami...my partner (of 25 years) and another couple will be onboard....first cruise for them, but our fifth....big fans of long repositioning cruises. We cannot wait to retire, seems we will be working until the bitter end....with two grown children and student loans we somehow forgot to get a retirement...so we are enjoying it as we go.....glad you found the board...anticipation of a trip is almost as good as going.

Professor MA - We would love to do a Transatlantic as we also are big fans of 'sea days'. We can't make this one, though, as October '07 is booked solid it seems like. Are you guys planning anything in '08??

 

Retirement is .... WONDERFUL :D :D . Though, unless you both retire together you can count on having to do all the yard work, all the housework, most of the cooking, all the grocery shopping, all the laundry - in short, you may become suzy homemaker! UGH! :p It's not really as bad as I just posted, but I do end up carrying most of the load at home since Linda's still working. I've never been a fan of housework but I guess fair is fair. She'd do it for me if it was the other way around, sooo....

 

You're right about the anticipation of the trip. Our cancelled cruise had a roll call of 129 people, 137 pages and 2,725 posts. We had private tours arranged, hotel reservations made, an index for each port showing what to do in each place, pre-cruise tours and drinks/dinner reservations, just all kinds of stuff. It was completely amazing and we were all sooooo looking forward to meeting and having the adventure of a lifetime. Everyone is really bummed.

 

Anyway, thanks for the welcome to the thread and we might be up for something in 2008 depending on where/when. Oh, and btw, congrats on 25 years! And being in MA where marriage is legal is super. Ain't life grand?

I'm glad you're enjoying the thread! We're probably the closest cruisers to you that I'm aware of from this board. We're Vicki (54) & Bonnie (55) and we're in Post Falls, ID. Sorry to hear about your cancelled cruise..I had actually considered it earlier this spring. We booked our 2nd 16 day RT from LA to Hawaii on 3/2/08 on the Diamond instead. (This year we sailed on the Island and it was fabulous.) We'll be celebrating our 10th anniversary together during next years trip, as well as our 4th year after marrying in Portland, Or. in 2004).

You must like sea days to have booked the Sydney to San Francisco cruise. We love sea days, it's one of the many things we enjoyed about the RT to Hawaii...4 full sea days over and 5 days back. The whales around Maui are awesome in early March and Maui is the first port on the 3/2/08 cruise. We'd love to have you (and everybody else) join us, there are still lots of cabins available and prices have dropped a little. I think the cruise is a little more expensive than the repositioning cruise was, but the airfare RT to LA is far less than flying over to Sydney to catch that cruise.

We've booked a fly/sail package at the Crowne Plaza in San Pedro on 3/1/08 so we can be on board as early as possible on the 2nd and just lounge around and have lunch prior to sailing.

Isn't the Northwest terrific!

We don't RV, but we do like to travel and Gig Harbor isn't really all that far away.

We'll look into the October sailing on the Mercury. I've gotten pretty spoiled on longer cruises, but a weekend get away out of Seattle would eliminate the need for airfare for us.
