We are going to do the exotic western Caribbean cruise and I was wondering if it is ok, when we are doing the shore excursions if it is ok to pick up rocks and seeds shells and such and bring them back home with me?

I would like to use them in my art.

I think Hawaii had a problem with people doing this.

Thank you!

Depends on the location. For instance you can't pick-up anything in Smoky Mountain National Park, what would happen if everyone that visited the park picked up a rock. Some beaches in the US have the same rule about taking beach sand home.

This is not usually a problem, but you can always find shells from local merchants. Or do you mean like seed pods? That's might be a bit dicier

You should probably just ask at the airport whether or not things like seeds and rocks are permitted.

Hawai'i's agricultural deparment is very careful to screen for anything going out of the state without the proper seals upon it, but it's fairly easy to find the approved plants. I guess you could take pods and seeds home - I never tried.

US customs does not allow you to bring back parts of plants, but in most places, collecting rocks and shells is OK. Just be sure the shells aren't a home for some animal! I picked up some tiny shells on a beach on Costa Maya once, and got pinched on the finger by it's inhabitant. I am a plant lover, and I would love to bring back cuttings from some of the gorgeous ones I see, but I have to refrain.
