Coast Guard ends search for Virginia man on cruise

Associated Press

MIAMI - The Coast Guard has called off a search for a Virginia man who apparently went overboard from a cruise ship off Key Biscayne.

Christopher Cadwell, 37, of Virginia Beach, Va., was last seen on the aft deck before dawn Friday as Carnival Cruise Lines' Fascination was returning from a four-day cruise to Mexico. The 855-foot ship can carry up to 2,052 passengers.

The search by a C-130 plane, two helicopters, a cutter and boat was extended Saturday about 120 miles north to Fort Pierce based on currents but without result.

Doesn't it make anyone wonder why, if he was last seen at 3am, then why the incident wasn't reported until the morning? I wonder who he was traveling with? I would hope it wasn't his wife.... If I last saw my husband at 3am, and then didn't see him in the cabin to go to sleep, you would bet I would be reporting him, then again, I wouldn't marry an idiot who would just fall off of a ship! If you throw somebody off of a ship, then wait several hours to report them, they might be long gone by then. I have personally known of several spouses who have thrown their spouses off of cliffs, why not cruise-ships? People get greddy with those life insurance plans. Don't worry, these cliff throwers are not friends of mine, they are usually spouses of people I know. One of my husband's good friends from high school was actually a survivor of an attempted murder - she was planning on using the insurance money to start a new life with somebody else! Crazyness!

I DO wonder. If I last saw my DH at 3 a.m. I probably wouldn't have missed him until the morning either. I would have fallen so deeply asleep that it would have taken a lot to wake me up before later that morning.

It would be very simple not to know someone was missing, if I was sharing a cabin, and my roomie wanted to stay out later than me (doubtful ;) ), I would not know she was or wasn't there until the morning...

Our group was on the Fascination 7/19-7/23 when this happened. From 7:15 in the morning until we were literally walking off the ship when our tags were called, they were paging this man. They asked him to notify the pursers office immediately. The 14 of us assumed he had to settle a sign and sail account. I didn't think about it again, until 3 days later while I was reading the paper at our hotel near Disney. I saw the article about the Carnival Fascination and my jaw dropped. It was absolutely horrible. It really bothered me thinking that somewhere over those 4 days I could have been by this man, or talked with him, as people often do on ships. I pray for his family, and hope that no foul play was involved. As previous posters have mentioned he was last seen at 3:00 am, on the aft deck. His cabin was on riviera deck. It is a terrible tradgedy.

Littlegoo,

Why wouldn t a husband/wife be out without their DH/DW. DH likes to go to bed early, does that mean I must stay in the cabin. Maybe he wanted something to eat. I trust my hubby, its ok if I go to bed and he stayed in the casino or went to a show.

On cruises, my wife and myself go our seperate ways on cruises fairly regularly. She wants to go to a show or something and I am not interested so go do something else. On our last cruise, her mom and several relatives came along and wanted to get the full cruise experience so they would do the midnight buffets etc which I wasn't interested in, so I would hit the sack at 11pm or some such. The next time I would be aware of her is the next morning, so if she had disappeared I wouldn't know until then.

So, my one curious question is, WHO last saw him on the Aft deck? It never really says in any article!

People on this board say it is very hard to fall off, jump, yes, but fall off? Not likely. If he was alone, I can't see him playing around on the railing. It is such a mystery, and I just don't get it??

But, my heart goes out to his family, I hope he gets found, but as time goes on, it isn't likely.

He was there with a girlfriend. We live near him, but the news has dropped the story. the last thing stated was that the search was called off. I find it strange that nothing else has been in the news and we live here in Va. Beach where he lives. The have not even said anything about the girlfriend or what she has to say or the family.

That is what I mean, it is very odd that there has not been a lot of interviews or information in the articles I read. The girlfriend or his family have no statemenets. If he were my boyfriend, I would try anything to see what could have happened to him!

Just strange? Unless I am not seeing something, maybe they are very private people?

Anyway, I hope this doesn't distract me when I go on the Fascination in Nov.

In answer to whom saw him at 3am: the investigators probably do not have to specificaly identify who last saw the person. Maybe under Freedom of Information type of acts they may not have to, but that varies state by state and the Fed gov't. If no one formally requests it they may feel it would not add anything to the investigation if they didn't freely release the information.

We all make judgement calls, if certain things happen to certain people, I react one way while, if the exact samething happened to another person I will react another way.

The media is constantly being bombarded by "causes" so they don't necessarily feel they need to investigate everything.

The family may understand what may have happened so feel feel there is no need to do any further investigations.

My husband and I definately do things on our own, sometimes even seperate vacations due to work schedules. We are very independent, and I trust him, but 3am in the morning? That's a pretty late/early hour. I could see 12am, maybe 1am, but the 3am is what threw me off. I am the type of person that would wake up automatically if he wasn't in the cabin at 3am.

Whatever happened, it is sad. The guy has parents who are probably going crazy right now.
