Eric & Karen’s Trip Report

Carnival Destiny – January 6, 2007 – January 14, 2007

Background

Karen and I are a late-twenties, we are a recently married couple from Northern NJ. This was my third cruise and it was Karen’s second (all of which have been with Carnival). Karen and I have done extensive traveling through the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean as well as a honeymoon in Hawaii in 2005. We had agreed after our last cruise we would not be cruising again. We have in the past much more enjoyed staying on a single island and immersing ourselves in the culture, rather than the “sampling” you get for various places while cruising. We did not keep our promise and we booked a cruise with a group of 10 friends. Here is a summary of the week:

Day 1 (Saturday, January 6, 2007) Depart for San Juan

We were picked up for the airport around 9:00am and arrived at Newark Liberty early for our 11:30am direct flight on Continental to San Juan. We met all our friends at the gate. We had no issues with the flight, we received our baggage promptly. One of our friends bag was damaged and Continental replaced the bag immediately. Our group was splitting up and staying at several different San Juan hotels for the evening. Karen and I, and 4 others stayed at the San Juan Marriott and Stellaris Casino. This hotel was a bit pricey, but was in a great location and the room and grounds were immaculate. It was nice having a 32” LCD TV in the room! We spent some time in the casino (I got a kick out of the free empanadas while gambling), went to an inexpensive dinner at a pizzeria in Condado. We had a few drinks after dinner and called it a night.

Day 2 (Sunday, January 7, 2007) Embarkation on the Destiny

We woke up around 8:00am and put on our bathing suits. Headed downstairs and grabbed a quick breakfast at the café in the lobby. We headed out by the pool area. Found a row of chairs and set up for the morning. We took a swim and tried out the water slide. The guys went out in the very rough ocean for a while, ignoring the red flag. By 11:00am it was time to head back upstairs and gather our things.

We grabbed a cab at 12:00pm and took the quick 10 minute ride over to the cruise pier. There were no signs of anyone disembarking from the destiny. The destiny appeared to be the only ship in port. We walked straight up to the baggage check in and gave them our luggage and headed up the escalators to check-in. There were virtually no lines and we made it through check-in in less than 15 minutes. They were just beginning to call groups to security. We went and checked out the duty free store. The employees said that if you put the bottle in your carry-on, Carnival will not take the liquor away. I discovered on this cruise that Carnival is not very strict at all when it comes to their “no liquor on board policy”. Everyone we were with bought a bottle or two to bring on the boat. The security screeners said nothing and the liquor collection person at top of the ramp did not seem to be doing much business. This policy seemed in place during the rest of the cruise, checking your liquor was optional. I am not sure why some people go through the trouble of smuggling liquor in Listerine bottles.

We were on the ship by 1:00pm, our room was not going to be ready until 2:30pm so we got some lunch at the Sun and Sea restaurant on the Lido deck. We had burgers and chicken and fries. We took a quick walk around and tour of the ship. We went to our cabin 8158 on the Verandah deck at 2:15 or so. Our room was in a very convenient location near the main elevators, no elevator noise. Our first impressions of the room were very positive. It was larger than expected, a very nice sized balcony. It was clean and most importantly, COOL! There were no A/C problems whatsoever with our cabin. The balcony door opened and remained open if you wanted it to. There was no refrigerator in our room. Our room steward was very attentive!

Our group met up at the All-Star Bar to catch the Giants and Jets playoff games in which both NY teams lost. We the decided to head out to Senor Frog’s for a few hours had a margarita or two and headed back to the boat by 9:00pm. It was time for the Muster drill, this took about 25 minutes. After the drill we spent some time in the casino and then hit the 11:30 buffet. Time for bed – big day in St. Thomas tomorrow!

Day 3 (Monday, January 8, 2007) Saint Thomas, U.S.V.I.

We woke up to the stunning site of the port of Charlotte Amalie. It is a spectacular harbor, with boats and Islands and sea planes taking off and landing. St. Thomas was the only Port of Call we did not have an excursion planned. 8 of us met up on the Lido deck for breakfast. I was disappointed at the length of the lines at the buffets. I did find the lines outside to be shorter than inside. The food was average. After breakfast we headed downstairs and took a cab over to Magen’s Bay. The water was great and the beach was perfect. We saw lots of birds and fish, played some beach soccer, and mostly just too in the warm Caribbean sun. We stayed about 3.5 hours and headed back to the ship.

A few of us headed back out to do some shopping. I bought Karen a gorgeous ESQ watch at a nice discount at the Little Switzerland shop near the cruise pier. We also bought a few bottles of wine to take to dinner with us. We strolled around the shopping are for an hour and then headed back to the ship to get some food for a late lunch at the New York Deli which was surprisingly good. The pastrami and corned beef sandwiches were top notch. We down to our cabin and watched some television and rested. Knowing that tomorrow was formal night I took the initiative to iron my shirts a night early to avoid the rush on the night of! We caught the end of the captains reception cocktail hour where all drinks were free. Skip the drinks they walk around with and go straight to the bar to order what you really want and it’s all free. We had 8:30 dinner that the Galaxy dining room. Our group had two table next to each other which worked out nicely. Our only complaint was that we had two different waiters and our courses were not coming out in synch. I don’t blame Carnival for this, as we never requested the maitre’d to fix it. I ordered a Mahi Mahi dish which was a little overcooked. Food in the dining room was average. It was not always served at the ideal temperature, but it wasn’t horrible. I never left the dining room hungry.

In contrast to our last cruise in which we were never charged a corkage fee at dinner, on this cruise we were charged every night the $10 corkage fee.

After dinner we had drinks and headed up to the casino. Spent some time losing some money at just about every game in the casino! I think this was the night of the first blackjack tournament which I made it to the finals but did not win. It was singles night in the disco, and even though we are married we decided to go to see the scene. They played a silly singles game which kept us entertained for about 20 minutes or so. The winners received a bottle of champagne. It was past midnight and we decided it was time to grab a slice of the pizza and turn in. The pizza reminds me of a low grade pizza hut pizza. It is consistent, it isn’t great, but it’s a tasty snack. I think growing up in NY we semi pizza snobs. Karen and I being a little tipsy decided to fill out our room service breakfast cards. We wrote in that we wanted lunch sandwiches for breakfast as well, but if they couldn’t do that we also checked off breakfast foods.

Day 4 (Tuesday, January 9, 2007) Dominica

We woke up and room service showed, they brought both the lunch and the breakfast , so we had a little feast in the morning.

My original plan for Dominica was to do the Canopy tour. I tried to book this tour through Shoretrips.com and I was told that they were not running the Canopy excursion that week. I wound up booking the Two-for-One Fun day through Carnival. Eight of our group was going on this excursion.

We got off the boat in the capital city of Roseau. We met our tour quickly and were put onto a cab and our Tour Guide Ann Marie was very informative on the history and site of Dominica. Dominica itself is extremely undeveloped. The roads are barely wide enough for 2 cars. We decided during the ride what our two activities for the day would be. We chose river tubing and a hike to twin falls. We arrived at the Hibiscus Adventure center about an hour after we left port. The whole excursion seemed to be a bit disorganized, but it seemed to work out. We changed quickly into our swim gear and grabbed a tube and hopped in this shallow river. We had lots of fun heading through small rapid sections and navigating the river. Everyone had a blast, the water temperature was just right. Our favorite part of the trip was the small dog that belonged to the tour company that followed us down the river. He would walk along side the river and lead the way. When there was no room for him to walk, he’d jump into the river and swim with the tubers. It was a sight to see!

We tubed for a little over an hour and we were picked up by a van and brought back up to the Adventure Center where they had some native Carib music and we were served a local lunch of rice and beans, plantains, banana salad, and some tasty pumpkin soup. It was now time to head over to Twin Falls. I took a power nap on the 20 minute ride over to the falls. The van pulled over near a small store on the side of the road, and this is where we would begin our 15 minute hike through the woods to the falls. We arrived and only saw one waterfall which was pretty spectacular. It was probably about 20 – 30 feet high with an excellent water flow. I took a quick dip in the pool around the falls, the water was chilly yet refreshing. I looked to the right of the falls and noticed people coming down a steep cliff holding a rope. I realized this was the way the way back from the “twin” waterfall.

The path was narrow and steep, meaning either people went up, or people went down, not both at the same time. It is unbelievable to me that Carnival allows this activity to be booked through them, yet Carnival warns against parasailing and other activities. We waited for the group to descend and made our way up. This was a pretty treacherous climb for those who weren’t wearing the right shoes or weren’t in average or better physical condition. Several of the girls and one of the guys stayed behind. We made it up, and we noticed, it wasn’t over, we had a while to go. It was up and down and extremely narrow at some points, but we finally arrived at a waterfall that was a little bigger than the first. We stayed and took some photos and headed back. We got back to the van and bought a couple beers and waited for the rest of the people on the tour to get back. We drove the 40 minutes back to the ship, Karen got back on and I took a quick walk around town. I got back on the boat a few minutes before the boat headed out of port.

It was formal night! We all got to wear our nice clothing and I was happy to have ironed the day before because the line for the irons was long! Most of our group met at the lobby bar and had some drinks before heading to dinner. I ordered the lobster and it was overcooked. We spent some time in the casino and then went to the adult comedy show. The comic was funny for a while, but at times it seemed like he was just trying to hard to make a joke dirty. Karen and I decided to order lunch for breakfast! We wrote in our lunch orders on the back of our breakfast room service cards, as well as ordering breakfast as a contingency if they couldn’t deliver the lunch.

Day 5 (Wednesday, January 10, 2007) Barbados

We woke to the views of a busy NJ looking container port and steady tropical rain. Our excursion was not starting until 12:30 in the afternoon so we all met for breakfast at the Universe dining room. I highly recommend doing as many breakfasts as possible in the dining room; it is a much more relaxing ambiance than breakfast on the lido deck. I had Eggs Benedict and hash brown potatoes and some fresh fruit. We were done with breakfast and still had a couple hours to kill before our excursion. We decided to take a cab the mile and a half or so into the city and take a walk around. This was the most city like island we had been to since Puerto Rico. There was some homeless people laying in the streets, but we never felt unsafe. We picked up a few souvenirs and headed back to the boat.

All 10 in our group were boarding the Jolly Roger Cruise which we had all booked through Carnival. We hopped on a bus and took a 5 minute ride to the dock where the Jolly Roger was. We were the last group to arrive and the boat quickly undocked. There were about 40 people aboard this pirate looking ship. The Carnival video guy was along for the ride as well. We all had a blast on the boat. It was all you can drink Rum Punch(It packs a Punch!). We rode out approximately 20 minutes to a nice spot about 200 yards from the beach. We were given the option of staying on the boat or taking a ride out to the beach. You had to choose one or the other. We chose to head out to the beach. The second we got to the beach – Karen and I jumped on a wave runner for about 30 minutes. The carnival video guy got us pulling off the beach. We relaxed after the wave runner for a few and then we headed back to the Jolly Roger where we tried out the rope swing and the plank. It was great jumping off the boat!

The party really got going on the ride back. Everyone on that boat was feeling the punch! I know everyone was singing on the bus ride back to the Destiny. We arrived back at the Destiny and we hung by the pool for a while. This whole afternoon was pretty much a blur due to that fantastic rum punch. I remember going down the waterslide a few times. I know I looked pretty funny in the pictures from that afternoon. We had lucked out, after the morning showers, the rest of the day the weather was nice. I know a lot of the early morning excursions had been cancelled due to the weather. Sometime around 5pm Karen and I headed back to our cabin. Next thing I know – we woke up and it was past 11:30 at night. We threw on some clothes and went to the Mexican late night buffet. We drank a whole bunch of soda, spent a little time in the casino and went back to bed. It’s funny how drinking in the afternoon can have such an effect on the remainder of the day. We weren’t the only ones to miss dinner from our group. 2 of our group showed up to dinner over an hour late. The dining room staff was nice enough to serve them whatever was left!

Day 6 (Thursday, January 11, 2007) Saint Lucia

It was a little overcast when we awoke in St. Lucia. Today Karen and I were doing an excursion on our own. Everyone else was heading to a beach via a boat trip, Karen and I had booked an ATV tour through ShoreTrips.com. We found the tour guide a few minutes before the time we were scheduled to meet. He informed us that we were going to be the only people on the tour today. He told us that policy is usually to cancel the tour if there were fewer than 4 people, but he was going to take us out anyway. We took about an hour long ride out the other side of the island while our guide gave us some interesting info about the island. We got out to the ATV’s and were given a quick lesson. Karen and I were sharing one, I was driving and she was holding on tight! Our guide was in front, there was a guide in the back and there was us in the middle. We rode over some treacherous terrain and deep puddles and out to a completely untouched part of the island. It was spectacular, miles of untouched coastline, our guide told us that they are in the process of turning that land into a golf course. We rode for about 45 minutes and then we took a break at a beach.

We were completely covered in mud and we took a swim to clean off. We drank some water and relaxed. We then headed back out, we saw a storm approaching in the distance. I wrapped up my camera good and we continued on. The rain started to pour but it didn’t slow us down. We crossed a road and headed up into a very hilly section of land. After about 20 minutes we stopped at a small house where we were treated to all sorts of local treats. Coconut treats, plantains, golden apples, coconut milk, banana bread and different juices. We talked to the family who owned the house for a bit and left a nice tip and headed on the last leg of our ATV tour. We rode for another 20 minutes or so. We were wet, tired and muddy from our tour. We hopped back into the truck and made our way back to the Destiny. We grabbed lunch on the boat and spent the remainder of the afternoon on the lido deck relaxing by the pool. We played a game of bean bag toss and lost. I watched the Carnival video from Barbados and our group was all over it during the Jolly Roger segment. I should have bought a copy!

This evening was the second formal night. I noticed that this formal night was a bit more casual than the first. A lot more men were just wearing ties without jackets, etc. We took some pictures had our dinner and had a nice relaxing night.

Day 7 (Friday, January 12, 2007) Antigua

We started our day at the dining room and ate a filling breakfast. 8 of us were taking the Eco-Tour with Eli Fuller which we had booked directly through their website. Getting off the Destiny at Antigua was hectic. I think we were about 25 minutes last to get off the boat, but the exo-tour waited for us. The tour went out from a dock about a 5 minute walk from where we got off the Destiny.

The Eco-Tour started out pretty boring, although in all my trips to the Caribbean I had never seen water as beautiful as Antigua. We stopped at a small island and explored, swam and had an excellent lunch. We then went over to Hell’s Bridge a small rock formation and explored a sea cave and saw a tidal pool. We then went snorkeling over a nice reef. The tour was nice – a bit boring, but acceptable. I think at $90 a person it should have been a little better. It was a relaxing day and we got to meet some people from the two other cruise ships that were in port that day. After the tour we did a little shopping, I found a nice set of The Glenlivet Scotch for my father at a very good price.

It was Filet Mignon night in the dining room. Everyone was very disappointed with their cut of meat. Filet should be very tender, this was a chewy piece of meat that was suitable for a cheese steak. We went to the disco and did some dancing. We hit the casino and called it a night.

Day 8 (Saturday, January 13, 2007) Day-at-Sea

I woke up early and grabbed breakfast and headed to the very back of the boat. Everyone met up here and we stayed out in the intense sun until about 2:30pm when a small rain shower dispersed us. It was a pretty lazy day, for us and for the captain, the boat crawled through the water at what must have been half speed all day. I watched some TV and packed my bags in the late afternoon. We spent a little time at the All-Star lounge catching some football playoff games. We had dinner and met up late for a final champagne toast at the back of the boat. We were all pretty tired from a day of sitting in the sun drinking. I enjoyed this cruise because of the lack of Day-at-Seas!

Day 9 (Sunday, January 14, 2007) Disembarkation from Destiny

We had planned on getting up around 8:00am but we were woken at 5:00am from an announcement from the captain that there may be a bomb on board. We were stuck in the middle of the port of San Juan, and the Coast Guard was supposedly going to be boarding our vessel. The room steward came into the room to check the closets for bombs. By 7:00am things seemed to be back to normal. The bomb scare put everything off schedule and we were not able to get off the boat until well after 12pm. Luckily we had a 3:30pm flight so no harm done. There was chaos at the terminal because so many people were still disembarking and so many people were embarking. There was more than one ship in port which only added to the confusion. We made it to the airport and began our journey home!

Summary

Embarkation: Great! Check in was a breeze – from the hotel to the Lido deck in under an hour.

Ship Condition: Very good – it is a 10 year old boat, and you could tell my the condition of the outdoor deck. Everything else on the deck seemed nicely maintained.

Entertainment: Average – We didn’t go to that many shows, but what we saw was typical of what you’d expect on a cruise boat. Nothing memorable.

Cabin: Excellent – No problems with air conditioning, our room steward always seemed to know when to make the room up when we weren’t there. He was always there when we needed ice or anything else.

Food: Buffets were better than expected, dining rooms were below what I expected.

Dining Room: Waiters were helpful, the singing and dancing gets old quickly

Bars: Good, friendly service, even when busy. Some good drink specials during the week.

Ports of Call: I love the itinerary of this ship. Dominica was a little disappointing but the other 4 islands made up for this. Antigua is spectacular! We are hoping our next beach vacation will be at Sandals Antigua.

Disembarkation: A mess – due to the bomb scare.

Hints: Board between 12pm and 1pm – your after the early birds and before a majority of the flights coming in.

Smuggling liquor – no need, just buy something at the duty free in the cruise terminal.

Order multiple appetizers at dinner.

Eat at the dining room for breakfast.

Learn to speak Spanish – it is a cruise out of Puerto Rico, therefore, there will be a lot of Puerto Rican people.

Other: The only real problem we had on the boat was our cabin telephone. There is a wake up call button on the phone, when we pressed the button it seemed to be calling someone else’s cabin. We informed the front desk and we were told it would be fixed. We tried again later that evening and we woke up the people in the cabin it was calling again. I spoke to the front desk again and tried to get them to do something for the people we continually were waking up. We were told they couldn’t do anything for them or us. We were a bt perturbed. We stopped using the button and just dialed 37 for a wake up call. The last day at sea a technician finally showed up at our cabin to take care of the problem. A little too late!

Overall: We enjoyed ourselves more so than our previous cruise, but we are certainly not addicted to cruising. We may go again in several years. We much prefer one island! I was impressed with the Destiny after reading many negative reviews. As with anything, it is what you make it. Don’t let little things ruin your one week a year of vacation!

Yes, the duty free store is right next to the boarding area, before you get to the xray machines. As the OP mentioned, the workers in the store will tell you to put the bottles in your carryon. The xray screeners will only say something it you openly walk on the ship with the bottle in your hand.:p

Do you have to wear a bracelet when you go to the pool area? Was the pool nice? You said that there were red flags on the beach. Is the water usually too rough to swim in? We are thinking of booking this hotel but was concerned with the water because of my kids (12, 16 and 16).

Hey NYEric. Just finished reading your review - sounds like we were on the same cruise!!!:) Talked to you here on cruise critic before we left, never met up with you but see that we were neighbors on the cruise - we were in cabins 8156, 8162 and 8164 -----and never saw any of our neighbors at any time! Sounds like we probably ran into you as our dining was also Galaxy at 8:30 and we were in the Allstar Sports Bar for the Eagles games and at Senor Frogs before sailing on the 7th! Also spent a bit of time in the casino playing blackjack...... the last night was a bit rowdy at the tables! We all had a great time, voted Antigua #1 on the list of stops and are planning on what cruise to go on next! Ah, back to the real world!

Great Review! Sounds like you had fun.

I think the big key here was that you went with a group of friends.

For some reason, I would hate to be with just my family, and everyone else around me speaking another lanugage.

Thanks for sharing!

Most of the Puerto Rican people were very nice and spoke English as well... it wasnt that bad. We made a bunch of new friends. You are sooo right - the key was the big group! We have done vacation as just the two of us and group vacations... I'll take a group vacation anytime over just us! - no offense hun! That was the reason for us booking this cruise - its not so easy to geta group together. Yikes... I have no trip to look forward to - time to start planning. Amsterdam for new years 2008!!!

Eric, I loved your review. Destiny is my favorite ship. I could have written exactly what you wrote regarding the Jolly Rogers Party Cruise. The only difference is, I stayed on the ship, walked the plank, and was swinging off the rope lots, and lots of time. It was great and the party afterwards was awesome. My husband and I missed going to the Boatyard afterwards because we fell asleep. :D

Hawaii - That was definitely a fun day of boozing! My pictures are hilarious from that day. The next day was even better when all my friends were telling me the ridiculous things I was doing and saying. I was informed I tried to get everyone to sing "Hava Nagila" on the bus ride back. lol - good time on vacation!

Terrorism hoaxes still plaguing law agenciesPosted 1/18/2007 11:13 PM ETE-mail | Save | Print | Reprints & Permissions | Subscribe to stories like this rssbox.gif

swapContent('firstHeader','applyHeader');By Mimi Hall, USA TODAY

The cruise ship Carnival Destiny, packed with passengers on the last leg of a trip to the Bahamas, was chugging Sunday toward the harbor in San Juan, Puerto Rico, when the U.S. Coast Guard got an ominous call.

Someone claimed a bomb was on board.

The Coast Guard ordered the craft to anchor away from the harbor piers so it could be searched. No bomb was found during repeated security sweeps that involved Customs and Border Protection officers, the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, the FBI and teams of bomb-sniffing dogs.

The case — among the most recent of the constant terrorism-related hoaxes and false threats that plague the nation's law enforcement and homeland security agencies — remains under investigation by the FBI.

Five years after 9/11 and the 2001 anthrax attacks caused a spike in false threats, senior federal officials say they still are forced to run down hoaxes nearly every day, creating a huge drain on agents' ability to pursue real threats to the nation's security.

I did save them - but it sounds like a lame grammar school excuse "My cat ate them!"

I brought all of them home and my cat decided to chew on them, so I tossed them all. Sorry!

Most of the poolside activities started after 3pm on the port days. Good times!
