Can anyone recommend a hotel in San Juan?

Recommended Posts

We are taking a southern Caribbean cruise on Adventure of the Seas later this year and would like to stay at a hotel in San Juan the night before the cruise. Can anyone recommend a hotel in San Juan that has good rates and clean rooms?

We stayed 3 nights pre-cruise at the Courtyard Marriott Isle Verde last year and we really loved it! We would have booked it again for next month but they were sold out 8 months in advance for the night we needed :(

Instead, we are staying at the Marriott Stellaris one night pre-cruise in a few weeks and are looking forward to it - we have heard good things!

We have stayed at the Marriott in Condado which was very nice. We also stayed at the Intercontinental too. They are both a little pricey but very nice and clean. There is a Ruth Chris Steak House in the Intercontinental in Isle Verde....very good, but a little pricey. Good luck.....and have fun!

I have stayed at the Marriott as well and it is a very nice hotel, right on the beach in the Condado area. The Caribe Hilton is also very nice and it is adjacent to the Normandie mentioned by another poster.

we stayed at the coral princess inn, in condado district. it was about equal distant from the airport, old san juan and the pier where the empress of the seas docks, and the pier where the big ships dock. about $150 a nite for two, with nice breakfast included, and just two blocks from the beach and lots of nice resturants close by. rain forest and other tours will pick you up at the inn with help of friendly staff.

We stayed at the Wesin Rio Mar last year for 3 nights and loved it. We are actually booked to stay there again in September.

Keep in mind that it is not close to San Juan--about a 40 minute drive. But the beach is great and the staff is really superior.

We're also looking for a hotel in San Juan for the night before our AOS cruise (sailing 7/29). We figured it's best to stay in Old San Juan to see the sights, rather than stay on-beach, since that's what we'll be doing at each port-o-call. So I scoped out the Sheraton Old San Juan Hotel & Casino...apparently not top of the line, but clean and functional, just what we need. I see it's right in the midst of Old SJ, and then I see a post (elsewhere) that included a picture taken from the poster's hotel balcony...and the ships are, like, RIGHT THERE!....Apparently, these folks stayed there the day before AND after their cruise, and said they WALKED to the pier and back in under 10 minutes each way!! I'm thinking...How perfect is this!!?? So I go to book it right away, and.................

NO AVAILABILITY FOR 7/28

Whoa is me. Gotta start all over again. So once again, I come to my fellow CC'ers for wisdom, placing my fate in your hands!

( 'cause my wife told me to take care of finding a hotel room about two weeks ago!! )

We stayed at El Canario by the Sea and it was fine. We had booked El Canario by the Lagoon for our upcoming cruise, but cancelled it when we got a winning bid on Priceline for the Marriott Stellaris Resort. ($130 plus all the taxes.) If you go to the San Juan Ports of Call board, there is a sticky there that tells what people have gotten for winning bids for San Juan.

Back in October 2003, we stayed 2 enjoyable nights at the Wyndham Hotel & Casino in Old San Juan, right on the bay. We had prebooked another hotel but upon entering our assigned room, we were shocked at the filth and cockroaches in the bathroom. We cold called the Wyndham and booked a room and beat a hastey exit from Hotel Hell. I think we paid like $145/night at the Wyndham, but this was last minute do or die situation and had no real choice. The place was very nice, big room that over looked the bay and most importantly...clean & bug free. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again for any future cruise out of San Juan that we might take.

I have stayed at both the Marriott and the Caribe Hilton and they are both fine. The Caribe Hilton is more of a 'resort' so if they are a similar price I would pick that hands down! I didn't try it but I read on these boards where people get the Caribe Hilton on Priceline all the time - but it is a gamble as you don't know what hotel you'll get.

AOS leaves from the PanAm pier though. It is NOT the pier that is just a quick 10 min. walk from Sheraton in OSJ. You can take a quick taxi to the pier though with no problem.

We stayed at the Hotel Milano in OSJ. Very inexpensive and somewhat clean. Probably not as clean as "Mainland American standards", but definately not dirty.

El Convento is also in OSJ. Haven't stayed there, but looks like a nice place to stay.

if old san juan is your preferance, we met a couple from mexico on our empress cruise that stayed at the el convento in old san juan. they, like us, remained in PR for a couple days post cruise and we met them there one morning before we all did a walking tour of the area and visited both the forts.they liked it very much and it seemed great to us.

At the end of Oct. we stayed two nights at the Hotel Miramar on Ponce de Leon near the PanAm terminal in the Miramar district of SJ. The rooms were clean and very large ( actually suites ) with a kitchenette and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We got this for $85 per night plus taxes on hotwire.com and this included a very good cont. breakfast. Look for a 2* with no pool. I've seen some info lately that its rating is now 2 1/2 * since they have put in a new elevator and other improvements. I actually pretended to book a package ( hotel and flight) to see the name of hotel, noted its features and then booked hotel only blind since with this type of booking on hotwire, they only tells you hotel name after you've booked it. There are some good nearby restaurants and a Pueblo supermarket for cruise supplies one block away. Info at http://www.miramarhotelpr.com/rates.htm

Before our Serenade cruise this Sat. we have booked two economy room at Coqui ( formally Green Island) Inn in Isla Verde since Hotel Miramar was fully booked. We only bought cruise 2 1/2 weeks ago. We are arriving at 9PM Fri. and most other hotels were full during this high season and we didn't want to pay almost the price of one of our cruise for a place to sleep for one night before the cruise. Did get a good precruise rate by contacting the hotel directly, 1/3 less than at the regular hotel web sites. Info at http://www.coqui-inn.com/. Economy rooms have a double bed and standard room two twins and kitchenette. Reviews on line were mostly good so we will see friday if it was a good choice. It only for one night anyway and we will be leaving early Sat. morning.

Have stayed at the Marriott Stellaris in Condado and it is a nice hotel. Renovations are about complete and the staff could not be friendlier. Staying there again post -cruise. Pre-cruise, I got a rate of $210 for the Caribe Hilton which was less expensive than Hampton Inn in Isla Verde (This one has received good reviews from other posters). A close friend was at the Caribe over Thanksgiving week and loved it.'

If there is any way you can swing it......bite the bullet and stay at El Convento.

We stayed 2 nights precruise and loved it. Right in the heart of old San Juan..... walking distance to any site. It is San Juans only 5 star. It is not cheap but if you plan on spending most of your time in old San Juan you will save on taxi fare going back and forth. There are also some really good restaurants that are very reasonable (compared to those on hotel row which I have heard are expensive) in old San Juan.
