MinnieCruiser Posted February 5, 2007 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2007 Hello, We will be sailing on the Rhapsody on 7/1/07 out of Galveston. We will be arriving a day early for our cruise. We are finding that Hotels in Galveston are almost all booked. We have decided that we will probably just spend the night in Houston. What would be a good moderate hotel to spend the night in Houston that is convenient to the port in Galveston? We are planning on getting a rental car. We will want to spend the night after the cruise in Galveston. Any suggestions for a moderately priced (around $100-$125/night) hotel in Galveston? Has anyone used Hotwire to make their hotel reservations in Galveston and/or Houston? MinnieCruiser
Chardo Posted February 5, 2007 #2 Share Posted February 5, 2007 All of the 3-star hotels near Hobby (Marriott, Holiday Inn, etc.) are usually under $100 with plenty of rooms available. I just booked the Holiday Inn through Priceline for $47 plus taxes.
MinnieCruiser Posted February 5, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted February 5, 2007 Hi, Thank you for the information regarding the hotels in Houston. The prices sound much better than the prices in Galveston. Are you also going on a cruise out of Galveston? MinnieCruiser
Plant Posted February 5, 2007 #4 Share Posted February 5, 2007 Hi MinnieCruiser, Also, check out the Galveston site: www.galveston.com for lots of hotel info (if you haven't, already :) ). I'd suggest that you go to the hotel's website or call them instead of booking through galveston.com. We found some info not up to date :( . Have a wonderful cruise! MinnieCruiser Posted February 9, 2007 Author #6 Share Posted February 9, 2007 Hi, Let us know how you enjoyed the cruise. We have never been to Houston or Gavelston. Are you spending any time before or after the cruise in Galveston or Houston? MinnieCruiser
Chardo Posted February 9, 2007 #7 Share Posted February 9, 2007 I'm arriving the night before the cruise, staying near the airport, and driving to Galveston in the morning. After the cruise we fly home at 7pm, so I have a few hours to kill. Probably head to the space center.
papermans Posted February 11, 2007 #8 Share Posted February 11, 2007 If you are driving from Houston to Galveston the day of the cruise be aware of terrible traffic jams. They will sometime shut the highway down for awhile for construction. At times the bridge into Galveston has been closed. There is alot of construction highway 45 on the weekends. If at all possible stay overnight on the island. It may save you a lot of frustration.
Chardo Posted February 12, 2007 #9 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Highway construction on a Sunday morning? Is that really a concern?
clearlakecruisers Posted February 12, 2007 #10 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Construction on I-45 South is a concern even on Sundays - the highway department often schedules construction/closures on week-end days since they assume there is less traffic at those times. There is current construction on new causeway bridges going into Galveston but can't say if that will be a problem at any specific time or not. Try checking with your hotel when you arrive and/or listening to local radio/TV stations for updates.
Chardo Posted February 12, 2007 #11 Share Posted February 12, 2007 Do they ever completely close the roads into Galveston? I'm planning on arriving around 11. Embarkation is at 2. That would allow for over 3 hours of extra traffic. Should I really be worried about missing the boat?
