Ships Clock & Time Zones

I have seen on many posts how we are told we should always use the ships clock instead of "local port time" so we get back from shore excursions on time. My question is: When the ships crosses times zones ( we are on the Hawaii to Ensenada repo 9/29), how does that affect time aboard ship? Do they turn the clock ahead when travelling East? Is that something that is announced? We will be travelling through three times zones.

Hi 98valkyrie,

Unfortunately, there's no "correct" answer to your question  ! It depends on what the Captain decides to do. If the time changes it will be in the newsletter and (I think) they'll put a card on your bed when they do the turn down service. There's usually a clock near the area where you leave the ship and you should set your watch to match :) !

I'm just "guessing" here, but I think that your time will change as you cross time zones on a Hawaii cruise.

We've not been on a Hawaii cruise (yet :) ), but on our other cruise's we just had to depend on the information from the Captain, the newsletter, and the crew.

Have a wonderful cruise and come back and tell us all about it!

I may be wrong, but I read somewhere that the ship will have the time from whatever port it departs from and stays on that time. But crossing 3 time zones could be a little tricky. Whichever, they'll announce it and/or put it in the daily newsletter you get each evening.

We went from Eastern to Atlantic time and back again while sailing on Spirit last week. The clock on the TV was changed, the clock on the bedside phone was changed, and announcements were made in the dailies and with a card on our bed.

One thing, though. Don't depend on the clock on your cell phone. Going to Atlantic time the Spirit correctly advanced the clock for their satellite cell link but on the return trip my husband's cell never updated back to Eastern time until we sailed into the NYC port.

We changed our watches/clocks eight times a few years ago cruising through the Panama Canal on Celebrity. We were informed each night before going to bed what the time change would be. Amazing how many zones and countries that do/don't observe daylight savings time there are. (Other countries do observe it, too.)

We did Hawaii to Ensenada also (in 03) and chose that route because of the time changes. We wanted to "lose" the hours gradually on the cruise back to the mainland. Much, much better than flying! Then we drove to Vegas and stayed a couple of more days to adjust to the time change again before flying home to Tennessee. Great trip!

Have fun,

Shay

You are a genius. "No honey, I don't want to go to Vegas to spend countless hours in the casinos and to do other Vegas stuff....only want to go to adjust to the time change." I wonder how well that would work with my wife. ;)

Remember--- Daylight Savings time changes completely this year. We start Daylight Savings March 11th and end November 4th. Mexico will not be sharing that time change meaning they will not be involved in it.

Be ready to change the time for excursions you book on your own. :)
