Carnival Legend Design Flaws

Recommended Posts

I have recently returned from Carnival Legend (7/18 - 7/26) and have some comments on design flaws I think should be corrected on future ships. Wondered if anyone agreed

Cigar Bar: I enjoy smoking cigars. But even I know putting the one and only cigar lounge right outside the dinning room is not a good thing. As we enjoyed our cigars nightly we infuriated many passengers as they waited on line to get into their 8:15 dinner seating. I would think future designs need to correct this flaw because i actually saw 2-3 arguments take place over people smoking cigars. Never a pleasant sight especially on vacation. As a cigar smoker I want to enjoy my cigar, but not bother those that do not enjoy it. A better place would have been the sports bar at the back of the casino.

Dining room vibrations/ rattles all day. The end of the dining room, (first level) rattles so bad it is hard to actually enjoy the meal. We visited friends sitting down there and were so thankful we were on the second level. Walk in the dinning room before dinner and you can hear the constant clanging of glasses as they rattle against each other. I have been on 3 other ship and have never noticed so much rattling.

Pools. The Legend has 3 small pool areas, with such limited chair space. By contrast, The Victory is so much better with a larger pool/deck area in the middle, able to handle many more chairs

Water Slide. - Who is the bright architect that put a water slide at the same end of the ship as the Adult only pool.

Children's area - (See water slide) - must be the same person that put the Children's pool right near the topless deck

LOL!

Having just recently cruised the Miracle, I can agree with faults there. Having the slide by the adult pool was odd....and the topless deck by the kids pool a bit unnerving.

as far as the cigar bar being outside the dining room...I have to say that as much as I detest the smell of cigars, I think the non-smokers were wrong here. If you can't stand the smell, don't wait outside the dining room.

For goodness sake, how hungry are these folks that line up there??? You can eat every 20 minutes on a cruise if you want, why the need to line up in front of the door of the dining room?? I never understood that. Get there 3 minutes after the doors open, don't line up 15-20 minutes before...Jeeze!!

BTW..the Miracle had no rattling anywhere.

It was amazing how much the Legend rattled. We were really surprised. Sitting at the table you felt it, and you could hear the hum of the engines.

The cigar arguments happened on formal nights when a line of 100 people or so would line up outside the dinning room because they take pictures near the entrance, creating a bottleneck. We must have received over 100 dirty looks. Because I am generally a considerate person it made it an uncomfortable experience at times.

I almost hate to say anything bad about this fabulous ship that we cruised two times (so far) and loved but I think you make some good points.

I think though that there must be some reason for the cigar lounge to be right outside of the dining room. You mention the Victory and if you remember the Ionian lounge, that ship's cigar bar, is right outside of a dining room too.

The pool size and vibration issues are real but I'm not sure what could be done about it. There IS substantially less deck space on the Spirit class ships to be sure but then they are way smaller ships by design...a design that I really like so I can live with that part just fine.

I hadn't thought about the water slide being close to the adult pool but maybe that's why its not open all the time? Just a thought and possible answer to a question that has come up over and over again.

Good observations, thanks!

As a non-smoker, I appreciate your consideration of others, and I am really sorry you were made to feel uncomfortable. If you are in the cigar bar, NO ONE, no matter why they were standing there waiting..bottlenecked or not, no one should have been making you feel uncomfortable.

it's too bad carnival dosen't have the same set up on the Spirit class as Costa does.. Costa's cigar bar is up top where carnival has the "Supper clubs".. of course we're talkin money here..but that was a great spot on Costa..no one was up there that didn't like cigar smoke.. and the brandys were great and cheap for costa

I also love the Legend but I also found what in my opinion is a design flaw. On the Paradise the video games are right next to the casino which is great, parents can go in the casino and their kids can be nearby but on the Legend the video games are isolated, really not near anything. Maybe they did this to keep kids out of the casino .

I agree with the cigar bar loacation being in a bad spot. I really didn't like walking through it to get to the dining room, but I didn't feel like the cigars smoking was wrong, just in the wrong place. As far as for vibrations,I really didn't notice any of that.

The only thing I really noticed was the location of the cigar bar. It's so open to everything else. Because of that, we never used it when smoking. People were lined up when we went to dinner every evening and we waited until they announced that the doors were open before even going down. Can't imagine how long that line was before we got there. If you got dirty looks, then that's their problem. You were in a designated smoking area, albeit a badly located one. Maybe they should have read their Capers.

Pat, we may need to find another place to enjoy our cubans. Nothing beats sitting around the aft pool late at night with a nice drink and good cigar (well almost nothing)

We are cruising on the Legend this January and we are looking forward to it just like every other cruise.

We cruised on the Pride 2 years ago and sat in the bottom dining room in the back. Yes, there was some vibration but not enough to really bother us.

Never noticed the cigar bar.

Never use the pools so I don't have a comment on them.

If these are the only problems on the Legend then I know we'll have a great cruise just like all the others.

I didn't like that either. I felt like I had to walk through the whole ship to get there every time I went to the arcade to check up on my daughter.

We cruised the Legend when she was brand new and my in-laws cabin rattled and creaked so bad they relocated them for a night and came in to remove the wall panels and re-weld them. They got a balcony for the night and then they moved them back. Kind of dumb. They should have kept them in the balcony for the extra trouble. They got 15% off a future cruise for the trouble but discounted TAs wouldn't take the whole 15% off.

I still loved this ship and the decor. We didn't use the decks much because we went to Bermuda in Oct. and it rained the whole time.

Hi there fellow cruiser

I was on the July 18 sailing with the inclement weather, waves and sick passenger.

I noticed the vibrations in the dining room but felt it was par for the course. A dining room in the aft on a low deck above the prop will surely give vibrations. I never let it get to me. I enjoyed my dining experience immensly.

Being a non smoker, I agree with the cigar bar being relocated to a better area. I never lined up for the dining room, I just arrived 5 min after opening. At one point, I could have sworn I was smelling smoke coming out of the ventilation system everywhere on the ship.. It lasted for only one day. That was a very good observation about the slide. In fact, the slide was hardly open on our sailing. Why did they put that slide by the adult area only? hmm.

As the old saying goes..we learn from our mistakes and hopefully Carnival's new ship coming out next year will have been modified.

All in all...the Legend was fantastic and I had the time of my life.

that truly is the stupidest thang having that cigar bar there.....and to make it worse, when we sailed the Legend, they would put the classical music trio in the cigar bar area!.....they didnt play too often so when they DID play we really wanted to hear them.....but to endure the smoke was just the absolute PITS!............while im on the box ranting, ill quote some pieces of an article in todays Cincinnati Enquirer, titled A Chemist's Views On Secondhand Smoke......Fact: Breathing second hand smoke is harmful. Fact: You do not have the right to indiscriminately harm others. Many clever arguments can and have been made to get around these two facts. Reasonable people can come to only one logical conclusion from these facts: Smoking indoors is not right. Many parts of the country have gone smoke-free and have seen positive economic growth, including Massachusetts, new york city and california. This should and does make sense when one stops to consider the fact that most people dont smoke. Most people dont enjoy breathing secondhand smoke. Most people would enjoy going out more if they didnt have to breathe in all the smoke. Businesses stand to gain from catering to the majority, as do elected officials. America is governed by majority rule and minority rights. People smoking indoors have no right to do so, and they are in the minority.....................:).........of course i agree 100% with this dudes views......common sense should rule!

Bottom Line Robby, this country makes TOO much money off of smokers... that won't change. 25% of adults still smoke and you better believe the government would like to see that number increase... smokers mean tax dollars and LOTS of them... if there are places that allow smoking, a smoker does have a right to smoke there... Believe me, in many places, the smoking section has shrunk dramatically... so non-smokers should be happy with that progress. In NC it is our number one crop, so things won't change here.. but there is a happy medium, as long as everyone opens their minds and respects the other.

I agree that placing a cigar bar in that area is poor planning... About as silly the days when they allowed smoking on an airplane... craziness.

I found it odd...that they offered before dinner Piano Music in this area & there were also TV's......the TV people kept getting upset about the piano and having the TV's (sports / news) turned up......so you could not enjoy either.

Lets face it.....the Fantasy Class ships have the very best pool layouts.

i certainly agree that Money makes the world turn......but finding a happy medium is the sticky area!....as far as im concerned, if im having to inhale someone elses smoke then im not gonna be a happy puppy!....clean indoor air should not be an issue about choices or rights....it is an issue of responsibility......and businesses have a responsibility to protect their employees and customers.....bar and wait staff have a higher risk of second hand smoke deaths.....why is this considered acceptable?.....why is it acceptable that 50,000 people die each year from second hand smoke?....if some terrorist act occurs in the US and kills so much as ONE person, all HE!! breaks loose......we have metal detectors everywhere imaginable now in the US....you cant even go to an amusement park without the annoyance.....but lets not worry about the 50,000 people dying needlessly of second hand smoke.......talk about lack of common sense.........i truly believe that if i go up to a smoker and spit on his shoe that its no more disrespectful than him blowing smoke anywhere near me....what would be the difference?......and yet they would have holy sh*tt fit if someone actually spit on them.....well im having a holy sh*tt fit each time a smoker parks near me and starts puffing..................Carnival needs to cater to the majority first and foremost....and respect and acknowledge the health risks posed by second hand smoke......and that means not sticking a cigar bar out in the middle of the promenade!.....the largeeee majority of nonsmoking peeps have noooo desire to be smellin or breathing in smoke......and rightfully so!.........its a sad thing when sensible health precautions have to take a back seat to makin a few extra bucks.......
