Crown Princess ex NYC - Rough ride ???

Hi All,

We're considering the 9 day trip out of NYC on the beautiful Crown Princess in July, 2007. Has anyone done the trip around this time of year ? Were the seas rough? I know that the 1 thing you can't rely on when on holidays is the weather but any and all opinions are welcome.

Thanks,

Jessica

We did the trip last year. It was rough coming down the east coast (we were the one after the list and took a modified itinerary). We hit a storm the first night and it was very rough the first day at sea as we passed North and South Carolina.

But it was not bad enought to stop us from booking the trip this July. Come aboard we are sailing July 5th. It is our second attempt at the same itinerary.

Wow, a second time, nice work. If we do take this cruise it will be 23 July departure. We are trying to decide between the Crown Princess ex. NYC or the Sapphire Princess ex. Vancouver. Pros & Cons, don't you just wish that you could win the lottery and be done with all the choices - just do it all? :)

Hi Jessica,

You are correct in stating you can't control the weather which affects how rough the seas are. You just never know what you will get. We have left from Boston at the end of October on the NCL Majesty repo cruise and were blessed with smooth seas on our way to Bermuda and PR while the people on the previous week experienced rough seas the night before on their way into Boston.

We have left and returned to NYC on the NCL Dawn + Princess Crown in September. On leaving NYC both cruises were smooth on our way to Florida. The return to NYC was a different. The Crown was slightly rough as it got closer to NYC. The Dawn was shaking pretty good the last night as winds that were the remnants of Hurricane Ivan hammered the ship. The gusty winds came out of the west while the ship was heading North. I actually had to get up out of bed and tie the now empty hangars with a towel to keep them from banging so I could get to sleep.

The way I look at it is your chances of rough seas are greater leaving from NYC then from Florida and even less from PR. For us this is offset by not having the expense of flying and all the hassels that go along with. You are much better off sailing in July then the seasons when storms are much more likely. Good luck with your choice and enjoy your cruise.

We have always left out of NYC.

It can really go either way.

The Horizon was a small ship which made for a rough trip.

The two Carnival trips were not bad, both were in the summer.

The NCL cruise was in the winter and the seas were very rough.

Obviously it is not enough to keep us away, as we still only cruise out of NY. You are better off in the summer months then if you were to cruise during the winter. If you think you may get seasick you can try the patches (they are a prescription) they worked very good on the last cruise.

We are also doing the Crown out of NY this summer, but earlier then you.

Good Luck.

We sailed the Crown 07/29/06 cruise and we had the worst weather out of New York for the first 1-2 days. They say it was the rougest for the Crown yet. But as we neared the Caribbean it got better. After all you are on a ship you have to expect it all. :)

aussieonwater,

We sailed on the Crown last July and the sailing was fine. If there is a hurricane or any other disturbance in the area, you will hear about it and the Capt. will take steps to keep the voyage as smooth as possible.

You could have rough seas out of Florida or PR. So that isn't an issue. I've sailed out of Miami to Jamaica and it was the roughest voyage ever due to all the different seas we cruised through. I've sailed from NY to Bermuda and had both one of the worse sailings where 1/2 the passengers were sea sick and also had one of the smoothest sailing on another voyage. It is the luck of the draw.

If sailing out of NY will save you money, do it. You will enjoy the sea days. Ships today sail faster than ever and have all the gizmos to make the trip as smooth as possible. If there is a hurricane, no matter where you sail from or what ship you are on, you will feel a certain amount of rocking.

Enjoy!

The waters will be rougher than the Caribbean....A little rockin motion.... You will notice it going and coming into the NY area.... Nothing to be concerned about.

We loved sailing the Crown last year 8/5.... and will do it again....

Enjoy the cruise.
