Smoking on cruiseships

Looks like this debate will most likely never be resolved huh? As a non-smoker I think the best bet would be to designate areas ok for smoking and have specific areas for smoking & non-smoking cabins just like a hotel. If you want a non-smoking cabin and they're sold out then you either book a different cruise or book the smoking area and don't complain when the person next door is smoking. I agree with many of the comments about the odor caused by smoking, health hazards etc but I have a funny feeling I wouldn't take it so well if I was a smoker to be told by others what to do if I wasn't breaking any rules.

Several major hotels chains have recently moved from having smoking and non-smoking rooms to banning smoking altogether. Eventualy smoking will be banned on cruise ships. That is the wave of the future.

Very good post, I think we could all live with this scenario. Please do not complain if I am smoking where I was instructed to go to smoke. I am not going to quit before my upcoming cruise but I will be considerate of non smokers and only smoke in the areas allowed, my balcony will be one of them.

A hotel that can rent a room from 1 to 7 nights, have walk-ins, etc, is quite different than a cruiseship that is booked for the duration of the cruise, where the attempt is to book it to capacity.

So let me understand this.

There are many, many more non-smokers then smokers.

Why would any business not try and please the majority of their customers.

And most cruises do not spend 7 days on the ship so they could smoke ashore or maybe in an area outside on the ship.

I always wonder how many non-smokers don't cruise because so many areas of the ship including the casinos and most bars are smoking areas?

I also wonder how you keep the smoke on the smoking side of the bar or casino?

Maybe some of you smokers can help me out here:)

 All this talk about smoking makes me want a cigar...anyone care to join me? My balcony is ALWAYS a cigar zone...

lol. I don't smoke in "real life" but, I have been known to have a smoke or two on my cruises. I agree with the balconies being the "smoke zone"(for smokers or non-smokers who just don't give a **** if you smoke or not) and inside or ocean view for the "allergic" non-smokers.

Now if only we could come up with a ban on fat people in swim suits! Only hot people should be showing off their stuff. The weight limit on bags for air travel is getting smaller and smaller so people can get bigger and bigger. ~~discuss~~ :) This is fun!

Oh no...I'm one of those "robust" cruisers. I buy swimming suits that cover up as much as possible, but honestly, there isn't any suit that can really cover up the "Pudge"! Ughh...I hate even thinking about having to scoot from my lounge chair into the water and back to the lounge chair. I wear a cover up when wandering around the deck and the hamburger bar, but chubby is chubby, ya know? I don't smoke. I don't drink much. I don't curse. But...I do like to eat. Needless to say, cruising is not the thing to do to keep the pounds off. Ha!

I hope you know I wasn't serious! The cruise industry would really lose money if that rule went into effect lol.

What do fat people have to do with smoking?

When you smoke everyone around you smokes because your smoke goes all over the place.

Do fat people force you to eat:)

Smokers force me to smoke, even if I am in a no smoking area.

The problem is that most of us non-smokers will still cruise and just stay away from the casinos and nightclubs that allow smoking..

Until it hurts the cruise lines bottom line nothing is really going to change.

So you smokers have nothing to worry about.

I know you weren't serious. Besides, there is nothing worse than seeing a chubby guy in a speedo or a round gal in a bikini that carry themselves like they are the center of attention. I've dieted several times thru the years but now that I'm in my 50's, and I know my hubby loves me no matter what, I just carry the extra 60 lbs. along with me on every vacation. When I was a young thing, I weighed 115 lbs. I was a string bean Jean, so to speak, actually underweight. Now that I'm an older lady, I'm Jean Jean the jelly bean. What a difference 30 years can make! Ha! No offense taken and none even thought about.

Many of us "chubby" folks would like to be thinner, but don't want to do what it takes to get there & maintain it. Hey...sound familiar to many of you smokers? Wish you didn't smoke but don't want to do what it takes to kick the habit? Hmmm...

Due to the number of personal attacks. I'm closing this thread for a while to let the "smoke die down".. no pun intended:eek: .. it's a topic that always generates a lot of controversy and that just can't be discussed in a very civil manner for long... maybe a day or two off will help..
