7nucruzers Posted August 2, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 2, 2004 We are on jewel of the seas 11/14/04 - can anyone tell me what the cell phone reception is like in Key west? We would like to call our children back home from here since we probably won't talk with them again until we return on the following weekend. Of course, they can reach us in an emergency! But we'd like to call from key west before we "leave" the US. We have Alltel service, others in our group have ATT, and verizon. Thanks!!!
Shaken_Bake Posted August 2, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 2, 2004 with my AT&T phone - it was beyond roaming at that point. I got a message that if I wanted to complete my call, it would be something like $.70/minute plus a connection charge. I hung up. It could be totally different with other cell phone companies - I have no idea.
golabonte Posted August 2, 2004 #3 Share Posted August 2, 2004 T-Mobile wasn't too bad. Reception came in an out, which is more than I can say than for the reception in my apartment. ;-)
jsbern Posted August 2, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 2, 2004 I've been to Key West several times on a cruise and never had a problem with my phone (Verizon, Cingular). I've even had reception as much as one hour away off shore.
kal Posted August 2, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 2, 2004 I've had EXCELLENT connections with Verizon in Key West. There's a cell tower in the middle of Old Town.
bambam Posted August 3, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 3, 2004 I spent 4-days in KW in May, made countless calls, spent hours on the beach using my Blackberry, didn't have a problem at all with either cell-calls or text (email) messaging. I was at the southernmostpoint, no problem...on Ft. Taylor Beach...no problem...We use Verizon... :D Incidentially, Consumer Reports listed Verizon as #1...by a long shot... Nextell was #2... AT&T was dead last...by a long shot... fyi... :D

mconthehighseas Posted August 7, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 7, 2004 Cingular should work there just fine; I've used mine in Puerto Rico and St. Thomas.
neocruiser Posted August 15, 2004 #9 Share Posted August 15, 2004 I used T-Mobile with no problem in Key West. (I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get reception, so I bought a pre-paid phone card just in case - didn't need it!)
