MOPED or BICYCLE rentals Nassau/Paradise Island

I am hoping someone local can help me...

We decided because this was our last stop to be more open & less formal with planning...

We are thinking we would like to do one of two things~

1. MOPEDS

Either just rent mopeds in Nassau and drive over to Paradise Island...explore... maybe hang out at Cabbage beach for awhile....

then take them back...

Where can we get mopeds? What do they cost?

OR

2. BICYCLES

Take $3 ferry to Paradise Island...Rent bicycles..and just have fun...and then take a taxi back to ship when we were done???

Is there a place to rent bicycles???

What does this cost?

Thanks for the help in Advance!

Not an easy question to answer. There are scooter rentals near the port.. but I really don't recommend driving them. Roadways are in disrepair, streets are unmarked, downtown traffic is miserable, Bahamian drivers are crazy. and there are accidents daily, some serious, some critical. This is NOT a good thing to do in Nassau. Besides, you can't leave your scooter to go to the beach.. it would be stolen, and you would be responsible for it.

Bikes.. not sure.. Paradise Island harbour resort used to rent them, but I haven't seen them recently. THere's not much to see on Paradise Island that you'd need a bike for. Middle is Atlantis.. and you can't ride there.. West is construction and no roadways.. east is the Cloisters.. which is nice, but the rest is just condos.. you can't get past the Security gates to the homes on the golf course.

Take the ferry to Paradise Island, Stroll up Casino Drive to the beach and relax.

If you want to see some of Nassau.. jump on the 10A bus for $1 and check out Cable Beach.. they loop back to town every few minutes.

They do have scooter rentals right at the port but I personally think renting one on this island would be taking your life in your hands. That area is very congested with crazy drivers and even crossing the street is a bit of a risk (and I'm from Montreal where we are also known to have crazy drivers :) ). Take the advise of Scubagirrl....she's the resident expert. If you want to see the sites take the jitney or even the horse & buggy ride.

Good luck with your decision.

couldn't have said it better

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=101123

if you ride a motorcycle 50 miles to and from work everyday, you probably do not

drive on the left (traffic circles can be especially confusing)

encounter pedestrians who are not used to you driving on the left - and may have had a liquid lunch (and breakfast)

interact with "island drivers" + other moped riders who've never been on one b4

ride an under powered vehicle in debatable mechanical condition which may or MAY NOT have decent brakes

and don't forget a nice liberal sprinkling of sand on the roads......

I prohibited my crews from renting them - too many injuries. Most just scrapes and buises but in the worst cases broken bones and hospital stays. Peers had the unplesant task of making "notifications" to the families back home....I managed to skip that experience, thankfully.

This is not restricted to the islands by the way. One of my 'favorite' (but sick) passtimes in Key West is having a beer in view of a stop-lit intersection on Duval and taking bets on the moped and bicycle crashes with shipmates.....
