Smokers...please advise

My husband is a smoker and I am very sensitive to the smoke. I've just realized that our OV cabin on Fascination has no window that opens. Is there an air-circulation system inside the rooms? If not, we are going to have to change our booking to a suite so he can have a place to smoke, (balcony) or he will have to leave the room and find a place to smoke. (That's what he does at home, but it just means stepping outside!)

There must be couples with one smoker on these boards. How have you dealt with this situation? Or has it not posed a major problem in the cabins?

Thanks.

I'm a smoker, DW is not. I've never had a problem finding a place to smoke too far from my cabin., whether it's the casino, a bar, or an open deck. I just got off the Imagination last week with a cabin on upper deck forward. It was three decks up to the casino, 4 decks up to the lido pool area for a smoke. Check your cabin location against the deck plans to see how close a smoking location might be for him. If he doesn't smoke in the house at home, you won't want him smoking in the cabin on the ship.

We're a one smoker household only unfortunately, for the time being, it's me. I also, don't smoke in my house. There isn't any air filtering system in the cabins so without a balcony, I don't highly recommend it. There is something in the bathroom that the smoke will go out of but it's not a fan or anything so I don't know how it works. Not very well, actually.

If you're really sensitive, getting a suite with a balcony might be a good idea so you can both enjoy your cruise. It's usually a long walk from the cabins to a smoking area on the ship.

My biggest hope is that within the next few months, I won't have to worry about it any longer. 5th attempt at quitting is coming up!

FYI you wont need a suite to have a balcony.

Also if you husband goes onto the balcony to smoke then this could create a problem for someone else. What if the people next to you are sensitive to smoke too? Then they cant enjoy thier balcony. :(

Also make sure you stay away from the bars and casino.

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. I guess he will have to make the decision as to how easilly he will be able to find a location to smoke. I never even considered how his smoke on the balcony could bother someone else, and you are definitely right about that.

Good luck with quitting Lezlee. I had smoked for many years, too, and tried to quit, unsuccessfully, several times. Acupuncture eventually worked for me, 15 years ago! I reccommend it highly.

My husband smokes and I dont and his friend would come to our cabin to smoke and it was terrible. So now we get a balcony and it is wonderful. He smokes out there. I think there is enough breezes out there I dont think it would bother anyone anyway. I think you would like a balcony, try it.

Well until they make a rule saying you can't smoke on your balcony, you can. My husband and I are also a 1 smoker family and he goes the the balcony to smoke and I usually am out there too, the breeze takes the smoke away and it's never been a problem. Also the casino is a smoking area, as well as the port side I bars. So I think that you should find out from your specific ship where your husband is allowed to smoke. The cruiselines make the rules, and advising people where they should and shouldn't smoke should be left up to the descretion of the cruiselines imo, seems like everyone has an opinion about it nowdays and some people are just rabid. Cheers and happy sailing, Carole

If you get an AFT balcony you don't have to worry about the smoke bothering other balconys (except maybe when you're docked).

Also to the one who is going to quit, best of luck!

And that is one of the reasons why we book aft or as close as possible.

I always ask my neighbors to let me know if they smell smoke and i will put it out while they are on their balcony, i have never had anyone tell me they can smell the smoke, unless the ship is not moving and we are in port but them i won't be on the ship at that point anyway. I also bring along a smokeless ashtray to keep outside.

My husband is a smoker. We went with an inside on the smaller ship. He just leaves and finds a place to smoke.

On the larger ships, we get a balcony, so it's easier for him - plus can't go wrong with a baloncy. Sorry, if we're bothering you on the balcony next door.

Unless you only a few days for a cruise, instead of getting a suite on the smaller ships, go for a balcony on the larger ships - more cruise days, same price for a balcony on a larger ship vs a suite on a smaller ship! That's what keeps us on the 7 day cruises - Destiny & Conquest ships are great, although we loved the Imagination.

Have fun!

I am so laughing right now! Try 4 smoking women in a porthole room!!!!!!! .........I finally put my foot down after first night of trying to get ready to dine.....only one smoke at a time....share if need be....god was that gross! First morning wake up call.....no smoking till all are awake and continue to rule one.....Totally horrible......will never go without a balcony again....EVER.....even if I quit.....gatta have the air! And the extra little private get away.

Also, Id much rather have quiet smokers sharing my balcony than TOTAL east coasters "yelling" at each other on what they were going to do for the day in the am while Im trying to enjoy my coffee and smoke, or couples that use the balcony as a play pin for their rambunctious offspring! But hey its all good.....no cruise is a bad cruise...ya gatta laugh at the little stuff and enjoy the big stuff.

Get a balcony babe!

Good Luck with quitting Lezlee!! :D I'm 22 (almost 23) and have been smoking since I was in grade 9 so I know how hard it is to quit (having tryed (sp) a couple of times - no luck - yet). Good Luck to you. I wish you the very best!! :D

Lezlee, I'm sorry for butting in! But wanted say, if you haven't tried Chantix, do it!! It has so far worked for me, and both my parents... it's good stuff and worth the money so far!! I wish you luck! We have all quit before, for anywhere from 3-7 years, and know how tough it is!! It's tough, but you can do it!!! Good luck!

I've heard the same about Chantix from a guy at work that quit.

LMAO, thanks for reminding me. On the Destiny a couple of weeks ago we had the Norton's and the Cramden's about 4 balconies apart on the deck below us. The distance was no deterent to their conversations at all. :D

I have been really excited as we are booked for our first balcony cruise.

I had a picture in my mind that included quiet solitude and fresh sea air.

Reality stomps in and now I realize that I may have second hand smoke and loud neighbors. :(

Oh well, maybe I won't like the balcony and will be content without one in the future.

That is almost a good thing....sorta kinda

Three people at my job quit smoking, using Chantix, for New Years. All three are still smoke-free. So it must work!

Here I am "butting" in again :D My sis is a nurse and says that EVERY patient they have put on this, is smoke free still... their office has a 100% success rate!! We have all done the patches, hypno, gum, mints, etc. I quit cold turkey for 3 years and started back, kicked myself every day!!! This Chantix is really different though... you just don't think about it. And when you do, the feeling passes very quickly!! Plus you are not replacing nicotine with nicotine :) If hubby has any desire... tell him to look into it. It's about $100/month, which is less than most spend for cigarettes! Best of luck!!

When I took my MIL on a cruise we shared an OV cause all of the balconies were sold out. There was no way she would smoke with the kids in the cabin. So she just went up to the top deck whenever she wanted a cigarette. And since you probably won't be spending much time inside anyway, he can always find a place to smoke, other than your cabin.

Have you talked to him about it? What does he think? If he isn't willing to take a walk then get a balcony.
