cell phone versus phone card

I just did a search on the boards about cell phone usage not only on land in Alaska but on board and now I wondering if it would be better to just purchase phone cards to use. Has anyone done this? Not that I have to talk to my kids everyday but we still need to keep in contact with them once in awhile. We plan on using the internet for contact but was just wondering about the phone cards. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have a phone card I bought at Sam's Club that I use, although I generally just use my cell phone these days. You can buy long distance cards everywhere in Alaska, so I would just bring the cell phone with the idea that if you can't get service somewhere you can buy a prepaid card and use it.
