Transportation from Marco Polo to Piazzale Roma

Recommended Posts

We are staying near the Rialto Bridge and are confused about how to get there from the airport. Has anyone done this? Also if we take a land bus does the Venice card cover that also? Thank you for any input.

A couple of questions to clarify your question. Are you arriving ub Venice after your cruise and staying in a hotel near the Rialto Bridge and then trying to find out how to get from the hotel to the Marco Polo airport? That is what I think you are saying.

If that is the case you have to look at how you are going to get from your ship to the hotel with all your luggage and then again how to get from the hotel to the airport again with all your luggage. Venice is not a rolling luggage friendly city in that the bridges of which there are many usually consist of steps with no ramps so you will have to carry all your luggage up and over whatever number of bridges that lay between you and your destination and that isn't easy.

One option would be to do what we did on our cruise last summer. The Golden ended our Med cruise in Venice and we planned on staying an extra 3 days after the cruise but we didn't want to have to carry all our bigger pieces of luggage to a hotel and then get them to the airport. What we did was we purchased the cruise line transportation from the ship to the Marco Polo airport. That consisted of a bus that picked us up the morning the cruise ended. We had put our larger pieces of luggage out in the hall the night before and it was transported by truck over to the airport. Then when our bus arrived we joined everyone else in tracking down our luggage and after renting a cart to carry the luggage (be sure to keep a couple of one and two euro coins for this task) hauled our luggage down to the "held luggage" office in the airport. This is on the bottom level of the airport (the bus will drop you off in front of the top level). We then checked in our larger luggage with the held luggage office and left with our carry on luggage to go to hotel in Venice. We took the special water bus service (10 euros per person from the airport to San Marks square and a little less if you get off at one of the earlier stops). We then walked to our hotel and started our 3 days in Venice. When we were done with our stay, we took the airport waterbus back to the airport picked up our bigger luggage at the held luggage office (there was a 2 or 3 euro charge per day for each piece) but it was well worth it not having to try to move them around in Venice.

You can take smaller pieces of luggage onto the regular (ACTV) waterbus service but at times they get pretty crowded and getting the luggage on and off can be a problem.

If you can get your luggage to the Piazza Roma there are a variety of land based transportation that can get you to the airport.
If you are staying by the Rialto Bridge it would be a pretty good trek to get from there to the Piazza Roma especially dragging luggage. Another option is that there are porters that can be hired to carry luggage and other goods around in Venice. You might check with your hotel and see if they can arrange that service for you.

Have a great trip.

Hi Janet,

You could take a regular(actv)water bus from the Rialto to St Marks Square then take the Alilaguna water bus service to Venice Marco Polo Airport. There are different types of Venice Cards, some of which include transportation to Venice Airport.

You can reverse what Mike posted, and take the Alilaguna water bus from Marco Polo to St. Marks Square, and then the ACTV up the Grand Canal to your hotel. If there are enough of you to split the cost and make it reasonable, you could also take a water taxi directly from the airport to the hotel. Those are expensive, but not so bad if several couples are splitting the cost, as we will be.

Hi,

You just need to buy your ticket for the Alilaguna service at Marco Polo Airport, then take the free shuttle bus service from the arrivals area to the Alilaguna pier at Marco Polo Airport. From there you take the Alilaguna water bus to St Marks Square, and then from St Marks Square, take a regular actv water bus to the Rialto Bridge.

I emailed my hotel and they said to take the land bus to Piazzale Roma and then #82 water bus to the Rialto. Think that is faster?

Hi Janet,

You can always take a land bus or taxi to Piazzale Roma, but I personally think arriving into the centre of Venice by boat is the way to arrive, especially if you have a daytime arrival time and the weather is good. You can then pick the 82 up from St Marks Square.

Janet, I think I would follow your hotel's advice because, as I recall it, there are two small pedestrian bridges between the Alilaguna stop at San Marcos and the ACTV stop. As wwinfl91 noted, these bridges are mostly steps and have no ramps. They are miserable if you have luggage. But no matter how approached, Venice is a wonderful city.
