ti2xgrr Posted April 14, 2007 #1 Share Posted April 14, 2007 We will be staying in Juneau, Fairbanks and Anchorage. Any suggestions on good restaurants that serve game meats as we will be in the land of some of the best meat in the world, ie Caribou and Moose. Thanks
wolfie11 Posted April 14, 2007 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2007 It is illegal to serve game in restaurants in Alaska (you can't buy and sell it). The best you can probably do is "caribou" stew which is really reindeer (they're the same species). If you really want game, you might check and see what's on the menu at the Native hospital cafeteria, as I have heard that they can serve "traditional" foods there. The gift shop is also a great place to buy native art.
ti2xgrr Posted April 14, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted April 14, 2007 Sorry I should have been more clear. Of course I understand that "wild game" is illegal to serve in restaurants. In this day and age all game meats that are served in any restaurant are ranched. I have seen a couple of menus with venison and was just wondering if there might be some good places to eat. I know that caribou is ranched and figured that moose might be also.
wolfie11 Posted April 14, 2007 #4 Share Posted April 14, 2007 Moose ranching is also illegal in Alaska although I think they do it in the Lower 48. I have never seen moose on an Alaskan menu. You might find venison occasionally, but the meat would come from somewhere outside Alaska.
