Tips Pooled or not? Lets find out once and for all

Funny. I never got that out of the post at all. I took it that he would find a way to get more funds to the person, not less. :rolleyes:

 

So why doesn't he just give more to that person? If he wants to give it all to the room steward and none to the assistant, why doesnt he leave an anonymous message for the room steward, requesting a rendezvous at a specific location, exchanging identical briefcases, espionage-like, with a blank envolope inside containing $20 cash, and the assistant steward will never know..

No, I'm not saying that at all. And I'll do my own math, thank you very much. What I'm saying is, if my steward keeps ALL tips that are applied to my sail and sign account, but has to split anything extra in cash that I hand him, that I would gladly go to the pursers desk and apply MORE to my sail and sign account for him to keep. Believe me, we tip, and we tip well, which is why I'm more concerned with where MY money is going. Why would I tip over above for excellent service, in cash, if the person I intended the tip to go to didn't even get it? Or, if I wanted him to have a certain amount, would I tip even MORE? By the end of the week, we normally tip in cash an extra $40 or so to the room steward. If tipping in cash means he doesn't keep it all, then I'll gladly apply it to his sail and sign tips from now on, IF it means he gets to keep it.

 

I never said that I wouldn't continue to tip if it meant they had to split it, so don't make assumptions about how much I tip "if any".

 

Of course it's MY money until I give it away, and of course I'm concerned about who gets it. :rolleyes:

 

They wouldn't be doing what they are doing if they didn't make enough money. Just leave the recommended tip on your sail and sign and sleep well at night. If you feel someone deserves an extra tip, slip it in their pocket as you walk down the hall. Simple..

The only ones that hurt them are the ones that don't tip, because they see no reason to, and come up with every reason in the world to make that seem right.

 

If I remove the S&S and tip in cash and they have to pool it,then I am hurting them.

after reading all of this. We tip at the bar for each drink.......we get taken care of from then on......we tip the steward, wait staff, etc. at the end of the cruise based on what is recommended as well as how we were treated by each of the aforementioned staff. Why does it have to be so difficult?:eek:

I think that many folks here are reading too much into what the OP was asking. What the question was is the best way to tip to ensure the person you wanted to tip gets the biggest chunk of the tip. I don't see anything wrong with trying to ensure the deserving person gets the most he/she can. Personally, I always wondered this too and eventually came up with my own way of getting around this splitting of the tips. I simply tip over the amount with Walmart gift cards. There is one near almost every port and they are always met with a big thank you. One time our cabin steward practically ran off the ship at our next port to spend it. He bought some socks and calling cards. I don't play in the casino but the splitting rule is also in effect in Vegas so it doesn't bother me as much.

Sorry, but I respectfully disagree! Nobody EVER asked HOW much money ANYBODY earned! Frankly, I'm not sure any of us really cares. Obviously their salary is enough to keep them from their families for their 8 month contracts. Many crew members stay on contract after contract after contract.

 

I think what the OP and many of us want to know is "does the crew member who we intend to give any extra tips, get to keep it?" If I hand my cabin steward an extra $20 at the start of the cruise, for whatever reason, does he/she keep it or is it pooled? If I enjoyed my Table Waiter and I tip extra, because he/she made my dining experience more enjoyable, does he/she get to keep it or is it pooled?

 

These tips would obviously be above and beyond the tips that are already placed on the S&S card. So, if I want to tip some of MY money for service above and beyond, it is CERTAINLY NOT tacky to ask if the crew member get to keep the extra funds.

That's an excellent idea. Then, it's more of a "gift" rather than a tip that they may be required to split. Great suggestion!

This is how they do it. We know WHY they do it. The people employed know how they do it. And somehow, you are thinking you are making it better for them.

My reason for stating what I did was that the only way you are going to get some sort of answer to the OP's question is to ask a crew member. I would wager that most of them wouldn't answer the question. If they did choose to answer, it probably wouldn't be a honest answer. Carnival corporate isn't going to share that information.

there is a website where the editor was getting so many letters about the tipping process that he e-mailed the cruiselines and asked, Carnival was the best at letting the staff keep the tips and Princess was the worst.

 

I keep the auto tips on and always tip the Cabin Steward & waiter extra, among other crew including deli workers.

each person gets to keep the tips they are given.

I leave the Lido tip on the S&S and have them increase it. Than I tip everybody myself the last night just like I always have since the first cruise.

 

If Steve can come up with a way to prove that how I tip is hurting the employees, I would like to hear it.

On some cruislines like Holland America, they are required to pool the tips when the auto tips are taken off.

As for "pooling" tips....the tips go to all the staff, the waiter, the assistant waiter....the room steward, the assistant....

 

when people remove the tips, and tip ONLY one of them, then yes, they must "tip out" their helpers or co workers.....

 

when cheap people stiff them ....the staff really suffers...

 

yes, when you don't tip in the usa in a restaurant it "hurts" the server, but they have other nights in the week with other people...on a ship you have the same staff every night during your cruise and when a large family group stiffs them .....wow...it really must hurt

 

 

IMHO have a few less drinks, get out of the casino half hour early and then just use the saved $$$ to pay the $10 a day.....I do hope that the cruiselines will start just including the tips it would simplify it all...til then...I hope people really consider how much service they are getting for $10 a day

and yes, Carnival workers can certainly keep the EXTRA tips we give them

 

but...when someone removes the auto tip then they MUST share..with their own assistants etc...

 

I am NOT saying that the waiter must share with the room steward and/or vice versa...but when you remove the auto tip then they must share with their co workers

 

of course best is to leave the auto tip on and tip extra to those who give great service....IF you get the rare "bad apple" then removing the tips could be justified IMHO....but that really is pretty rare

I would like to see a policy statement that shows that if you tip in cash you are stiffing the workers. I always tipped with cash. The auto tipping on the S&S card was put into place because people where to cheap to tip and didn't show up in the DR the last night. It wasn't because of the people who did tip, in cash.

 

I haven't seen anyone in this thread saying they aren't tipping the $10 or more a day. They just do it in different ways.:)
