dilacruiser Posted May 7, 2007 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2007 When taking a 12 day Western Mediterranian cruise with people the following ages: 16, 21, 22, 46, 48, what is a reasonable amount of emergency medical coverage per person? I'm debating between 150,000 up to 500,000.
Krazy Kruizers Posted May 7, 2007 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2007 That is the ball park figure we use.
dilacruiser Posted May 7, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted May 7, 2007 Actually, I'm wondering if $150,000 is enough, or if we have to go up to $500,000 to be safe.
Krazy Kruizers Posted May 7, 2007 #4 Share Posted May 7, 2007 We always go with $500,000. Our own medical coverage doesn't cover anything out of this country and if someone had to be med-vac, that can be pretty expensive.
kitty9 Posted May 7, 2007 #5 Share Posted May 7, 2007 Med Evac and medical coverage are completely different and should be separate coverages. My mom fell and broke her hip on Celebrity this past January and the medical bills for her hip replacement have now totaled $97,000. The medical jet, which is covered separate from the medical bills, was $9000. I think that $150,000 per person for medical bills is a good amount, especially if you have your own insurance, which should pay for a good portion of any medical treatment you might have to have in an emergency. For the most part, travel insurance is supplemental for those who already have their own insurance.
eandj Posted May 7, 2007 #6 Share Posted May 7, 2007 The amount is dependent on your current medical insurance coverage. And since most policies come as packages, you're bound to get more or less of something. You just have to prioritize your needs and study all the company packages to see which one gives you the best number one and two priority coverages. We have very comprehensive medical insurance covering us in and out of the country. So we aren't neccesarily looking for that. But medivac is important as our insur doesn't cover that at all. So just study all the policies carefully and weigh what's important to you. Make sure that the cost of any nonrefundable amounts are included if you want air, hotel rooms etc reimbursed along with medical and cancellation coverage.
