Dumb newbie question.

I'm gonna ask at the risk of sounding stupid, but I've never been on a cruise ship, and my curiosity has gotten the best of me.

 

What the devil is that big whale tail looking thing on top of a cruise ship. A big muffler mebbe?:D :eek:

Are you talking about the smoke stacks:confused:

Sounds like you are referring to the carnival funnel. Does it look like this ...

Basically the purpose of the funnel is the keep the smoke and soot off the passengers. By putting it high it is hoped the wind will carry away the smoke and soot.
