Deep Sea Fishing.. what happens to the fish?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know what happens if you actually catch something?

When we went deep-sea fishing years and years ago on an excursion in Alaska, we had the option to pay to have the fish (huge salmon) cleaned and shipped to our home on dry ice. As we are not salmon lovers, the locals were happy to take our fish off our hands when we docked at the marina.

In Cozumel last year, we all caught some good size Mahi-Mahi. There were advertisements posted on the boat concerning a agency that will have your fish mounted and shipped home. Was not interested, could not afford it at the time anyhow.

If you want, the mate will clean the fish for you, and then recommend a restaurant that will cook and serve it for your party. (catch a cab as soon as you get in) Or you can leave it on the boat in which the crew thanks you for their dinner.

Also, any bill-fish caught is catch and return.

On our Panama Canal cruise last year, friends of ours did a deep sea fishing excursion and whatever you caught on the boat, the 1st mate cleaned and cooked for you for lunch. They had a great time and said the lunch was delicious!

The boat our family was on caught a Mahi Mahi and another person caught a Barracuda.

We didn't get an option to send it home. We just left it onboard and the crew will sell them. Their exact words were "we'll give it to the locals to eat." In other words, they will sell them for money probably.

We didn't have the option to mount it. Unless it was in a brochure that we didn't read. Have fun.

Years ago a friend of mines father caught a marlin . When he was wrestleing with it, he was told if he didn't intend to have it stuffed, mounted or whatever they do with it, he was to release it.

Having one of these babies mounted is BIG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, plus having it shipped home.

This Marlin would have cost me $4,000 to have it mounted and shipped home. It died after diving after a 2 hour fight so the captain got to keep the fish. Caught in Kona, HI (Alibi Sport Fishng)

The captain of the charter I was on gets to keep the fish caught to sell on the local market. The captain will usually flash freeze some for you and have it shipped to your house a couple of days after you get home. Not sure if everyone charter is like this and it might come down to the type of fish caught.

When DH and 3 friends went fishing out of Ketchikan, they each caught their limit, which I heard was pretty unusual and were given the choice of flash freezing and mailing home or letting the captain sell it. One friend sent 10+ lbs to his daughter at a High $ rate, and the others left their fish with the captain. So, besides their tipping the captain, he also got quite a few fish to sell. The guys loved the fishing excursion!:)

Most bill fish are catch and release now. If you want one mounted they will take measurements and have a "fake" made. It is expensive to have it done though.

My brother in-law caught salmon during their Alaska cruise and had them shipped home. I guess it depends on which guide company you are with. The best bet is to e-mail the company you will be fishing with and ask what your options are.
