Crew Questions:

Recommended Posts

Not likely actual crew members will post & tell you what they make. But yes, they do get time off & are allowed to go to shore & do what they want. You may see them shopping or at the beach. That includes Cruise Directors, dancers, waiters, etc.

he didn't say how much they make but he did say they are fed our leftovers.....including wilty salads etc. kind of made me feel sorry for the crew!!!

Hi,

That is not totally true, I don't know which company he worked for, but I used to work for Carnival and never ate left overs. There is a crew mess where all the waiters and bar tenders, and sea men eat and then there is another dinning room where all the entertainment, camp carnival counsellours, steinners (spa)and casino personnel eat. That dinning room is way better that the crew mess.

We don't pay for food, but i we give our waitters a weekly tip, about $10

(not crew mess, that is buffet style). the same goes with our cabins, the same people that eat in the crew mess have 4 p/p cabins, the other ones have cabins with bunk beds, 2 per cabin. They are free, and we tip our room steward about $10 per week.

We also have a crew bar, where our drinks and snacks are cheaper, there is loud music, alot of crew members of all nationalities and pool table.

We can go out to the islands on our own or we can go on tours for free if they are not sold out.

All the entertainment and casino staff can socialize with passengers and go to where passengers go (disco, shows, pool, spa, gym, etc)with the exception of passengers cabins and dinning rooms.

The money is not great, but as a casino dealer I made decent money in tips, and the fact that food and boarding was free, the only thing I was paying for was cigarrettes and drinks.

Crew life is hard work, long hours, but also lot's of fun.

Contracts are 6 to 8 months, so if you don't care for your co-workers you may be in for 6 bad months unless your department alouds you to transfer to another ship.

Officers, Captains and Cruise directors have really nice cabins, those are located right by the bridge, my husband used to be a cruise director so I was lucky enough to live with him instead of in my interior top bunk bed cabine.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Going on Carnival Legend on 6/10/07

thank you for posting mom2b (and an early congrats on your "2b" assuming this is what you mean). captain and officers aside, i did not realize that they segregated out dining arrangements based on one's "position" on the ship. doesn't that perpetuate a rigid class-like system on board and make things a bit uncomfortable and awkward?

The manicurist in the spa on Glory told me that she shared a cabin with one other person, not four to a cabin. I've also seen other posts on this site from people who have heard the same thing, two to a cabin. Try the US Navy, it's not unusual at all for 4-6 people to share a windowless cabin, especially the junior ones onboard, both junior officers (Usually 01-02) and quite a few enlisted. Officers and enlisted also eat in different dining rooms and have different meals.

It's not at all unusual for senior members, and certain jobs which are considered "professional" to eat in different locations. It is a bit of a class system, just like the rest of the world is. The more senior you are and the level of your job, the better the benefits.
