Recommendations in Rome

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any side trips from Rome? We visited Rome last year and was wondering if there was an alternate side trip?

Thanks for you help.:) :)

There are a lot of options from Rome, but you do not say whether you are spending nights in Rome (hotel) or just want a day trip from the port. This being said, we have been to Rome on more than 6 ocassions and have never tired of this city. There is much to see and do, and just spending a few hours at a cafe in the Piaza Navona can even be a wonderful way to spend some time people watching and rest-up for the rest of the trip. Another option is to go to Tivoli where there is Hadrian's Palace and the wonderful Tivoli Gardens. If you want to experience one of the hill towns, than a visit to Orvieto is another nice jaunt.

We are planning on visiting Ostio Antica after we dock at Civitavecchia. We will have been in Rome a couple of days on our way to Venice. Who knows though, none of our plans are concrete at this point

We were in Rome two weeks ago for three days before a Greek Isles and Turkey cruise. We also had been in Rome last May so we wanted something different. We booked with Stefano at Rome Cabs for all of our transfers and also for a full day tour outside of Rome. We went to the ancient Etruscan village of Tarquinia which was absolutely fascinating. Then to the medieval town of Tuscania to walk the streets and have lunch at a fabulous restaurant. To a local farm for a wine tasting and olive oil and then to the lake and town where Tom Cruise got married! It was a Sunday and in the afternoon all the Romans had gone to the countryside for the afternoon, so he had to improvise on our itinenery. We were happy, the countryside is so beautiful! Stefano is so knowledgeable, passionate about Etruscan history, very charming, a good driver, etc, etc! There were 6 of us and the tour was 450 Euros for the day (8:30 to 6:30 or so) He will also take you to Orivieto and Assisi or other areas if you wish.

We used his services for airport to hotel, hotel to port, and port back to airport. Prices were good, service was great, they were always there early ( and we had a 6:30 am ship departure)

I just can not say enough about how pleasant the experience was.

How far afield do you want to go? Florence is about 2 hours away by train.

Has anyone sailed from/to Civitavecchia?

How close is the embarkation point from the town/city? Facilities at the Port?

Any information will be helpful. :)

The port entrance is walking distance from town and from the rail station (though the latter could be a bit long if you had luggage), but the ship is moored quite a ways out so there is a shuttle from the port entrance down to the ship and embarkation building. We sailed from Civitavecchia a few weeks ago and stayed at the Hotel Traiano in Civitavecchia the night before. It was an easy walk to the port without luggage, but they shuttled us down the morning of our cruise (the cost of that shuttle was included in what we paid them for our airport shuttle the day before). The folks at the hotel were very nice, and the stay was a good value, especially compared to Rome hotel prices. My only complaint is that the bed was very hard, but for one night it was no big deal.

If you are just passing through, then it's easy enough to walk the town, but there isn't a whole lot to it. A few shopping streets with the usual assortment of shops, but otherwise probably not enough to hold your interest for a day - I'd move on to Rome which is about an 45 minutes to an hour away by train. Taxis to Rome are very expensive from here (at the end of our cruise, taxi drivers were quoting people 200 Euros and more to get to the airport, but this may have been because there was a taxi strike in Rome that day - I think 100-150 Euro is more typical). The RCCL Rome city transfer is 85 Euro per person.
