Shogun Posted June 10, 2007 Author #11 Share Posted June 10, 2007 Hi Folks, Just now we are planning to be away for three weeks, I week, Princess tour including the Rocky train, a cruise then a week in Alaska. This will be one of a few trips that I want to do over the next ten years, other ones include Asia Aus and NZ South America while I would love to do more, health, age and money will mean I will be happy with what ever I am able to fit in, May be just may be a world cruise, but if I do it will only be the one. yours Shogun

LoveThisCruisingThing Posted June 10, 2007 #13 Share Posted June 10, 2007 Be prepared to become an addict. I went to Alaska last year for the first time and also first cruise. Loved it! Knew it would be at least two years before another cruise. However, the last email Princess sent me in Dec...was too much to refuse. I am headed to Alaska on 7/20 roundtrip from San Franisco (which was supposed to be the last year from SF but not anymore LOL). You will LOVE it. Enjoy. Grace chanting: no more cruises for two years no more cruises for two years.
miss honey Posted June 10, 2007 #14 Share Posted June 10, 2007 We sailed on the Diamond to Alaska last May and loved it. We booked again for May 10,2008. It was a very laid back cruise, and the scenery was unbelievable. Carol

Shogun Posted June 11, 2007 Author #16 Share Posted June 11, 2007 Hi Folks, Thanks all, for those who have been on the Diamond, what is different between her and say the Golden or Grand. Have been told that folk do not dress up as much for formal nights for Alaska is this true. What would be the one trip , or thing that you would not have done, if you know now what you did not know then. On a down note wife has not been to well nothing major just long list of things one after another, then she has been told to go to an eye hospital as they have found a problem., so the cheer her up I have moved from my normal; inside cabin to the Hong Kong suite, have I done the right thing, what will see be happy. yours Shogun

It is beautifully decorated, with lots of sculptures and paintings. Color scheme is mostly red and gold. Check out the casino even if you don't gamble--it's a jungle theme. Nice spa too if you like spas. There is an indoor pool, nice for Alaska (Golden has this too, Grand doesn't anymore because of MUTS--Diamond does not have MUTS). There's lots of mosiacs in the pool area too. The disco is in the same general area, but not up quite as high, and it has an outdoor deck off it, with a great view. I haven't seen the suites, being an inside cabin person. But I can't see how it could be bad, and of all the itineraries anywhere, this is the one where you want to have a large balcony. Alaska is all about scenery and wildlife; even being from the Pacific NW where it looks about the same I'd say it's spectacular. Cabins I think are very similar to Golden/Grand. When we were on her, people were more lax on formal night than I've seen elsewhere. But, that was only one cruise with one set of people, I don't know if it's a trend. I'd take my normal stuff, I think you'd look better dressed up a bit rather than down. Hope your wife is feeling better very soon!
bjkTX Posted June 12, 2007 #19 Share Posted June 12, 2007 I'm not a "detail" person, but we've been on the Golden, Diamond, Grand and Star Princess, and I found them all to be very much the same in layout and for what was available. I'm sure there are differences, but fairly minor since I was at home on all of them after being on the Golden. The decor is probably different (DW would have noticed) - but they were all beautiful! The Diamond was especially nice since we were on her to Alaska when she was very new - and I'm sure she still sparkles. Our next cruise is on the Coral and we're looking forward to seeing all the differences on that class of ship. Shogun - I hope everything works out ok for your DW in time for your cruise - what a treat the suite will be!

kaycascade Posted June 12, 2007 #21 Share Posted June 12, 2007 Hi Shogun, We have just returned from a 14 day cruisetour with Princess. We cruised from Whittier to Vancouver on the Diamond Princess for the last 7 days. Wonderful time!!!!! Recommend this to everyone. The Diamond Princess still has the new ship appearance and is grand and great. We were in a mini suite on the Emerald deck and appreciated our balcony as we had great views of calving glaciers, sea lions, dolphins, and whales, not to mention the snowclad mountains and the beautiful blue sky. Your wife will thank you for the balcony. Kay p.s. Remember the binoculars
