qwert Posted June 10, 2007 #1 Share Posted June 10, 2007 We were planning on taking the White Pass Rail excursion in Skagway, but heard that passports are required for this train because it enters Canada? Does anyone know if this is true?
janmitch Posted June 10, 2007 #2 Share Posted June 10, 2007 Yes, it's true. We were stopped at the border and asked to hold up our passports. Sometimes they actually come on and check them, sometimes they don't. We went all the way to Carcross and actually got our Passports stamped in the Post Office there. They have 6 stamps to choose from. It was a great trip!
Yukon Posted June 10, 2007 #3 Share Posted June 10, 2007 The Summit excursion, which is what most people take, does NOT enter Canada so you don't need proof of citizenship. For all other WP&YR trips (to Fraser to meet a bus, to Bennett or to Carcross), you do need a passport, or birth certificate and photo ID. See http://wpyr.com/schedule.html if you'd like to verify that :) Murray
Toyz711 Posted June 11, 2007 #4 Share Posted June 11, 2007 on the round-trip train ride...when they get to the top, you are told to stay seated as the other train go past you. you are not allowed off...once the other train pass, you flip your seat over to face the other way and the train heads down. no need for passport or anything else. but that is the round-trip only. finz2u Posted June 11, 2007 #5 Share Posted June 11, 2007 Needing the passport and crossing into Canada depends on whether you take the cruise-line sponsored train tour or an independent. We went with Chilkoot and took the train up and bus back. Our customs agent could have been Tom Cruise's twin! Very dishy. We crossed the border into Fraser. Fellow cruisers on the cruise-sponsored train did not cross into Canada. Have a fabulous time. Alaska is really special.

Not true - you can book a train trip that goes into Canada with the cruiselines too. Whether or not you need a passport depends strictly on the destination - the Summit excursion does not require a passport, all others do, regardless of who you book them through.
