sailing 8th Sept, been reading a bit about hurricanes, how likely are we to get one over in Bermuda then? we got the tail end of hurricane Mitch nine years ago doing the eastern Caribbean on the grand princess, it was bad enough on that huge ship. don't fancy going through it again on a ship as small as the journey

Hi Profzed !

September is right in the heart of Hurricane Season. That's always a concern. With that said, Hurricanes are usually slow moving, and always very trackable. The Cruise lines and Ship's Captain will do everything possible to keep you out of harms way. They may even go to an alternate location if there is a storm in your path.

Hopefully, everything will be fine. Enjoy your Cruise !

There is some interesting data on this site http://bermuda-online.org/climateweather.htm, which indicates that,

Studies conducted by the Bermuda Weather Service found that from 1609 to the present day, devastating storms affect the Island every six to seven years. Our tropical cyclone season is from May through November, with an average of one storm passing within 180 nautical miles of the Island every year.

If you scroll down to "Hurricanes", you can get more detailed info with dates of all hurricanes. Fabian was the last major one to hit (Sept. 2003). We visited Bermuda a month later and it was sad to see the extensive damage.

Occasionally the ships will leave Bermuda early, or delay arrival until the storm has passed, or if there is no other choice, divert to another destination (such as Canada.) But most sailings go as planned, and hopefully yours will too. It's a wonderful destination...enjoy! :)

Hi Prof Zed - we are going to be on your sailing of the Journey - and the last thing we are worried about is a hurricane.

We trust the captain to make appropriate decisions for the safety of his ship and passengers, and we welcome any diversions - that is part of the fun of traveling.

A friend of mine was on a cruise to Bermuda a few years ago when the ship was diverted because of a hurricane - and went to Martha's Vineyard instead! What's not to like about that?

Two years ago we took my mother on a Caribbean cruise, and the ship left Cozumel early because of Hurricane Wilma. We were about the only folks in the dining room that night, but still had fun.

Are you a good sailor? If not, get some wrist bands or bonine or the ear patch.

There are always some risks in life - it would be boring otherwise.

Hi Crabby,

I will be on the cruise before yours (with my 3 daughters) and feel the same way..no cruise line is going to take a ship into a hurricane and they know way ahead.. not like the earthquakes we have here in California with no warning..we are looking forward to our trip!!

Crabby Harper and Jan - we don't sail until in November, but I love both of your attitudes. A few changes just are new experiences. And it's still a vacation!

Profzed - Meclazine is wonderful. Does not make my husband (who is very subject to motion sickness without it) sleepy, he can still drink, and best of all, it is not a prescription (however we have to buy it over the pharmacy counter), and is very inexpensive. Downside is you have to buy in such large quantities but they last for ages. One a day as a rule, but if the seas are really rough, he may take one twice a day. Basically what the doctors on the ships will give you. He uses the 12.5 mg.

Relax and enjoy your cruise, have a great time.
