Yet another snorkeling question

I have done a search for snorkeling, and read a lot of info, but have not found answers to our questions. We will be taking a repositioning cruise from Seattle to Miami in Sep of '08, with stops in Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapluco (along with some other ports). We want to do some snorkeling, and wonder which of those three stops offers the best, as far as viewing (fish, water clarity), price, and service? Also, what do you do with your "stuff" (money, ID, camera, etc) while you are in the water?

Thanks,

OBG

for your money and things , you can get a waterproof holder,, at most sporting good stores.. or dive shops..

we got one and it really keeps the water out.. they were 10 each..

as far as snorkeling... we didnt snorkel in any of these ports unfortunatley only cabo and it wasnt worth it , the water was too rough.

In general September is not the best time of the year for snorkeling in that part of Mexico. It is towards the end of the rainy season and much mud/branches etc. have come down in rivers from the mountains, so the water isnot very clear.

In P. Vallarta snorkeling around Marietas Island, out in the bay- will be better than around Los Arcos, which is close to the shore.

Sailing out to the Marietas is nice. However, snorkeling isn't much either in Cabo or Puerta Vallerta. You'll see some fish, not particularly colorful, that's about it even in the so-called best season.

If one of your stops is Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa, there is good snorkeling not far from the tender pier. There are little fishing boats that will take you across the bay for a few $'s. Very nice beach, good (not great) snorkeling. There are food/beverage concessions, so you can claim a lounge chair, drop your stuff and have food and/or a beverage after your snorkel before heading back.

I agree with the earlier comment that, along the Pacific Coast of Mexico, September isn't a particularly good month for water-based activities - because ports such as Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and Acapulco are at the foot of mountains and lots of "stuff" flows downhill as a result of the heavy rains that continue, typically, into May. Other than the Cabo area, I don't think the other Mexican ports of call are known as good places to snorkel, though I do it (and enjoy it) at Playa La Angosta in Acapulco - not far from where the cliff divers perform.

Sorry, I meant to say that the rains continue into October. You'll be in the area at the end of the rainy season - and, with some luck, things should be okay. You won't really know about weather conditions, though - until you're about to depart for your trip.
