Portable alarm clock?

Does the ship do wake-up calls? Can't decide whether to buy a portable alarm clock or not. Trying to pack light.

Wake-up call, yes, but there is no snooze alarm. We have a small portable alarm clock the has a built in snooze and the face lights up with a touch.

I also use my watch as an alarm. Since my wife has partial hearing lose in one ear, I'm her alarm clock.:)

One of the things always in our luggage for any trip is one of our battery operated travel alarm clocks. We somehow have ended up with three of those puppies.

We also always pack at least one flash light and a first aid kit.

I also take a travel battery alarm clock w/lighted dial. Cheapie, $5 at WMart, but it works. As kitty mentioned, room service will deliver coffee/whatever, at an appointed time, and that will wake you up.

I don't travel anywhere without a small travel alarm clock. They don't take up much room and can really be a life saver. I never trust someone else to wake me up or an in-room radio/clock. Sorry, but I would leave a lot of other things behind before I'd leave my travel clock. I can't afford to miss a meeting or flight because someone else didn't wake me up -- sure, this is a cruise, but I'd hate to miss time in port because I over slept. (I don't plan to set an alarm clock on ship days though....unless they have some activity I just can't miss. What goes on early on ship days?)

Set your room phone to ring 15 minutes before the time you put on your room service order the nite before. No travel alarm needed, but then when I wake up in the middle of the nite, I don't want to know what time it is. Some seem to want to know that, but for me, not knowing helps me go back to sleep.

if you planning on relying on room service be sure and call it in, i put the door tag out twice and still had to call it in...i'm guessing someone thought it was funny to take my order tag....had to wait on coffe...but not long...

Sorry you had a problem but we use the door tags 4 days out of 5 on our many cruises and have never had a single problem.

I bring my little electric clock, but without an extension cord its a gamble if I can place it in a great location to see it from my bed during the night when I wake up and want to know what time it is.

So, far Iv managed....just just barely with an electric. I just happen to have a little one the right size I bring. I dont like wake up calls that you have to spring out of bed to answer the phone. It would be different if the phone was next to your bed like I have it at home.

Hey Dan. Funny thing - the ONE time I put my b'fast card on the door, I didn't get my order. About 30 minutes after it was due, I called and they said they didn't have a card from me.

The cabin steward told me later that some teens thought it would be a nifty idea to remove all cards. He said they found out who they were and the parents disciplined them.

Because of that, I just don't trust using the door hanger.

I call the second I wake up, and almost before I get into my robe, my coffee/croissants are there...5-10 minutes tops!:)

Sometimes I don't remember to program the room phone. Next morning room service IS my wake up call. I should probably double [even triple] the tip to account for the shock they have to endure.

Wake up service aside, there is no clock in the room. It drove me batty because I'd have to go to the aft stairwell to find out the time or find the tv channel that had the time. Okay, I know it's vacation and we shouldn't be watching the clock, but some of us are definitely Type A's and need to know the time. I didn't wear a watch but I bought a cheapo Carnival slip-on watch for $4.95 in the gift shop! Anyway, TAKE A CLOCK!

i thought teens might have been the problem but didn't make a fuss over it...

we are early birds anyway so i just called it in.

oh you guys would have lol at all the stuff i packed for our trip...yes, i over did it! next time i will know how to down size!!!

but i do agree with having to have a clock in the room at night...one day i didn't feel good so i took a nap and was shocked when i rolled over and looked at the clock...one thing i can say is that it's dark in those rooms when the curtains are closed!

i have this thing about a fan when i sleep and yes over the years i've got a collection of them also...good thing i didn't forget it this trip...no where on ship to buy one of those!

For the small amount of space, I always pack a small, cheap electric alarm clock. I also Always pack a power strip. Plug the power strip into the outlet, and the clock into the power strip. (The rest of the outlets on the strip go for Game-boy charging, video camera battery charging, cell phone charging)If I wake in the middle of the night, I can always look at the clock on the counter to see what time it is, without turning on the TV and disturbing anyone else. also works out for taking a nap and not oversleeping...

Have you ever had problems with an electric clock running too slow/fast when used on a ship? I've heard this sometimes happens.

yes. i thought my clock suddenly broke on the cruise b/c it kept losing time. i didn't bother to bring it home. i chucked it, and was sorry i did b/c i later read that shifts in the ship's electrical current cause this to happen, so my clock was fine.

in fact , on the site w/ the casino jobs, they tell the employees to bring a battery operated alarm clock b/c of this. i'll see if i can find that...

here it is:

You may also want to pack small appliances such as electrical razors, hair dryers, and/or CD player. Since the electrical current onboard (110 volts, AC) differs from the voltage used in Europe, Australia and Africa, you may need to purchase new appliances or bring a voltage converter. It is also essential to bring a battery-operated alarm clock as fluctuation in the ship’s electrical current can cause electric clocks to run slowly.

and, here is the site it came from:
