What to do besides baths and beach?

Is the island itself a don't miss to tour? We don't feel we should attempt the climb down to the baths and it does not appear you can really see the beauty from the top so it looks like we should skip Virgin Gorda. So for Tortola is there anything to see or do other than a beach? We do want to get some souvenir trinkets.

We always seem to enjoy seeing the island to get a better understanding of the culture and history of it than just staying at the pier.

Thanks to all info. :)

You can grab a taxi and arrange an island tour, hike Mt sage, visit Callwoods and learn about rum production on the island, catch up with Egberth Donavan at the North Shore Shell Museum and listen to his stories and how he works with the island children to teach them about their island heritage (plus have some good, inexpensive food while you are there), Visit Aragorn's Studio in Trellis Bay and the caribbean heritage canoe Gli-Gli http://aragornsstudio.com/CaribCanoeProj.htm, visit Sunny Caribbee in Road Town for some great island art and island spices, Visit Marina Cay where Author Rob White lived and wrote, the island became the subject of a movie based on one of his books.

Want locally made pottery? Go to Bamboushay at Nanny Cay, take a day sail with one of the many local operators. Visit the Botanical Gardens in Road Town or the ruins at Mt. Healthy.

So many cruise visitors head to the places the cruise lines push and never see the real BVI. Although they are both wonderful, there is much more than Cane Garden Bay and the Baths. Do some research on line, follow the road not taken and you will find the true beauty of the BVI.

To use the words of a tv show, be a traveler instead of a tourist. ;)

I love the ideas on Tortola! We love the island!

Another one of our favorites is Virgin Gorda. You can take a water taxi over there and get a cab driver to give you a tour of the island. The view from the top of the Baths is breathtaking! There are many other sites and unique aspects of this island as well!

So we are a group of 6 will we be able to get a driver that can hold 6 people and give us a tour of the island? How much does this usually cost? We really are not beach people. We would rather just drive around and take pictures from a window and do a little shopping.

Thanks

Rose

Yes, you will find drivers with vans or jitney type taxis that will handle six easily. You can negotiate a price up front for your tour of the island and how much would depend on your bargaining skills, how long you want the drive to last and where you wish to go. ;)
