Advice on 2-way radios and ipod player

 Leaving in 10 days for our first cruise and want to bring aboard 2-way radios to keep in touch with our 12-year old-- any recommendations for a good set under $100 that works on a cruise ship and are somewhat indestructable? Also, we are in a JS and were hoping to bring something so we can play ipod songs while we have a drink alfresco-- any ideas for something that can play an ipod with decent sound quality that won't take up much space in our luggage?

Thanks in advance from a cruising newby!:)

You need one that has a range of at least 5-10 miles. If you purchase one of those, you also need to purchase an FCC license (around $80.00 for 5 years). You can do this through the WEB. Check on your cruise line board. Some lines actually rent these two way radios.

If you are looking for something to use on the balcony, stick with small battery operated speakers that can plug into any type of audio device with a mini-plug. That will save you from running an extention cord back into the room.

We found a really small Sony speaker operated by two AA's at Walmart for around $35. The volume will never be mistaken for a Ted Nugent concert, but then the neighbors might not share your taste in music anyway.

Be sure to look for the mini-plug, that way it will work with any MP3 or portable CD.

Our family tried the 2 way radios a few years back. They work really well when you are on the outside of the ship (open areas like decks and balconies) but had a much harder time if anyone was inside. As for keeping in touch I will bet that he spends more time with you than you think. If he does want to go off on his own just make it a rule that you meet up every few hours to check in.

I agree. First, trying to hear a conservation with a 2-way radio while on a cruise ship is almost impossible unless you are in an area that is deserted which I doubt you will be. And second, if you decide to use them remember to be careful of how and what you say. Everyone who is within hearing distance will be able to hear your conservation.

Unless he is bringing a friend with him chances are that you will be able to keep tract of him easier than you think. He will either be at the arcade, young teen club, or by the pool. Just let him know ahead of time what his bounderies are and that when you decide to check on him you will expect to see him there.
