Stolen Items While On Board?
Are fellow cruisers on board ship usually honest people? What I mean is: Has anyone ever had something "lost" or "misplaced" while on board ship and NEVER returned to them? If so, what did you do about it?
My son, on our 2nd cruise (he was 18) hooked up with the wrong crowd...they took his walkman and his wallet was lifted (of course we told him not to carry more than $10-20 in cash, but he doesn't listen)
In my opinion a cruise ship is nothing more than a small city with a diverse group of people. There are honest people and people who aren't so honest. I take the same safety precautions on a ship as I do anywhere else.
I AGREE! I do not see the ship any different than any other part of my life....Heck..I left my Camcorder at my Kids's Daycare (50 kids or less) Christmas program which was at our local Memorial hall (owned by city!). I called the next day...and for weeks after. It was never found. Not turned in..This is in a small town with "people you know"!

I had a disposable camera taken...I left in a restroom it by accident, went back 5 minutes later and it was gone. I dug through the trash  and it wasn't there either. Talk about stupid...almost all of the pictures were used. Somebody out there has some pictures of me swimming with dolphins that I'd like back!!
Okay, just a little scenerio, A couple of months ago my mom went to the gas station, she swiped her card at the pump, pumped her gas (fill up). She got down the street and decided to look at the receipt, she only spend $4.56.... she thought that couldn't be right, so she looked at the amount per gallon, it was $0.2959.... she thought holy cow they made a big mistake. She phoned me and asked me what to do...I told her that it was her lucky day...don't go back when they change the prices they should always check to see if the price per gallon is correct. My point is, I don't think she was stealing... the gas station made the mistake not her. I know lots of people will think that is stealing, but why? Had she not looked at the reciept she would have never known the difference.
How many times have you purchased, honestly, something that was priced wrong... I was at dillards and found a wheeled garment bag for $42.50 it was orginal $360.00. I was going to buy 3 of them as gifts. I had the clerk scan several of them they were all $150.00 except the orginial one, the clerk said it was priced wrong, but that I could have it at the$42.50, since that was the price. I didn't steal it, they made a mistake....

Just my 2 cents....
The difference between this and the soda card, is that the company made an error. If you only buy 1 soda card between 2 people, Carnival isn't making the error, you are cheating them out of their profit.

Not saying either scenario is right or wrong, just pointing out the differences..

on a cruise 3 years ago, standing just outside the casino.........2 older ladies were playing the slots with there back to me.......as I was watching.....one dropped a wad of $$$$ with a rubber band around it. I just went up tapped her on the shoulder and said look down................she was so surprised..she could not thank me enough...............saying this to say..... one takes their character with them on the ship...........if you are a thief on land you will be one at sea and vice versa.............

A sleazy lawyer would argue that Carnival's error was failing to verify the identity of the person presenting the card. :)

A self-righteous lawyer would argue that Carnival's error was trusting the integrity of their passengers. :D

Although I highly doubt Carnival would take anyone to court over this.

Am I wrong, or do you not get a limited number of sodas on the card? If I am right, what in the world is wrong with sharing the cards???

My point... Many times my husband or I might order a drink from a restaurant, the other might finish the drink. Is this stealing?

On cruises, we usually drink the sodas offered in the room. We pay the ridulous price for them, who cares who actually drink the sodas, we paid for them right?

Help me understand the problem.

I believe Soda Cards offer you unlimited soda... this was from the Carnival website:

We will offer to all guests the option to purchase a "Fountain Fun Card" which will allow them unlimited soft drinks for the duration of the cruise at a one time purchase price (including gratuities). The "Fountain Fun Card" can be purchased at the casino, lobby and pool bar onboard the ship. In all locations where beverage service is offered, guests may receive a glass of the soft drink of their choice - one glass will be served at a time and only to the guest whose name appears on the card. The card cannot be used through room service. NOTE: A 15% gratuity will automatically be added on at the time of purchase of the Fountain Fun Card.

I believe mcgore was talking about sharing the soda as I was. She referred to finishing each others soda. I have no problem sharing a soda with my dh. Yes even if my name is not on his card:rolleyes:

Obviously, it's intended for one person and priced based on what they think a single person could reasonably consume. And yes, priced so that they can make a profit. I know -- it's hard to believe that a cruiseline's charity instincts are so impaired that they actually care about making money. Damned capitalists!

You all have given me a GREAT money saving idea! I think that I am going to purchase one drink card for our entire family of 5. The person who's name is on the card can be the one who has to keep going back and forth to get soda's all day long for all of us to share. (just kidding) ;)

For understanding my post. I am by no means a miser on a cruise. My last bill was about $1400. I am not trying to stop Carnival for making money at all. I just think sharing with spouse (food or drink) is not stealing, sometimes it can be quite romantic, thinking of sharing some wine and strawberries on the balcony....

No Problem:) I just have to laugh at some of these posters sometimes. God forbid you share a coke with your dh or smuggle a little rum because they don't carry your kind or just because it's convenient to have out on your balcony. You would think you were robbing a bank
Oh yeah and I deliberately wear my jean capris in the dining room cause all I think about is me, me, me and I just do it because I want to ruin my fellow cruisers meal:rolleyes:
I just like to answer questions as thruthfully as I can, from my own experience cruising:)
So go ahead and share your soda.....and have a wonderful cruise.

Whilst working onboard a cruise ship I was once called every name under the sun because I was standing at the pursers desk holding a passengers camcorder.
The passenger who had left it in the showlounge was coming to the desk to see if it had been handed in just as I was handing it in.

I was very upset, shocked & disturbed that this passenger would accuse me of stealing his camcorder just because he saw it in my hands.

I lost track of the amount of camera's, camcorders, sun lotions & jewelery & money clips I'd handed in to lost property.

Passengers should take more responsibility with their belongings because not everyone onboard is as honest as they believe they are.

Hey Kurban, I agree w/ you. I buy a soda card, DH doesn't drink soda for the most part while sailing, so if I get a soda and don't want the rest but my DH is feeling like one I should tell him no he can't have mine? What a joke. Why in the world would I waste mine and then make him go buy one? I can't believe that sharing a soda w/ your spouse, even though you only bought one card is being compared to stealing or picking up someone else's belongings.

Yes, you can drink unlimited soda IF YOUR NAME IS ON THE CARD. The cards are intended to be purchased and used on a "per-person" basis; the cruiselines are crystal clear about that.

If you purchase one card with the intention of 5 people using it throughout the cruise, that is theft. You are using something without paying for it. Go ahead and do it, but don't try to pretend you're not stealing.

(My Mom always said that) I had a good experience also. On our last cruise, I left my digital camera in one of the lounges. didn't realize til the next morning, checked with the purser, and someone had returned it. It would have been bad to lose the camera, but also all of our photos from the cruise.

Lesson learned - make sure you collect all your stuff!! Nice to see here that there weren't any staff issues, just fellow passengers.

I have always said that people are creatures of "Opportunity".

After working in retail management for over 20 years I HAVE SEEN IT ALL!

I have come to the realization that about 10% of people are dishonest and will take advantage of every situation that presents itself.

About 80% of people if given the opportunity will take advantage of the "Right" situation. ie: discounted item or service based on the mistake of another person.

The last 10% will never take advantage of a situation no matter what it is. If they notice an error, they will call it out.

These are some very hard numbers but think about it. Have you ever gotten a "Deal" on something? A free drink? or an extra something? Did you point out the situation to see if it was an error or a true special? Most people keep their mouth shut and get out of there as soon as they can before the error is detected. In other words, "THEY PLAY DUMB" and take advantage of the opportunity.

This combinded 100% of the people make up every situation, every home town and every vacation. We must all look out for ourselves and belongings and "BE A PART OF THE LAST 10%"!

Please, feel free to FLAME ME if you disagree. But, Look inside yourself before you do it and decide what percentage you are in.

As I posted above, its about TAKING ADVANTAGE of the situation. Everyone seems to have their own opinion of what is stealing or not. I never mentioned STEALING. I did mention HONESTY! Most of the people on this board just like any other situation are in the 80%. Their posts here seem to prove it!

When a situation of opportunity presents itself people will set their own limits. Some will go all the way and steal the camera, some will only go as far as using another persons soda card, some would never do either. CASE PROVEN!

Do you dissagree now?

Right on!

People will justify their actions all day and all night.

Let's check ourselves before throwing a nose up!

Exactly! If you'd take a weeks' worth of Coke without paying for it, don't be too self-righteous about others who'd take a camera without paying for it. Both are stealing.
