Urgent advice please re Rome

Recommended Posts

Hi - we made our decision to cruise quite late and have now found ourselves having to pay a fortune for accomodation in Rome. I have got two opportunities but they are likely to disappear soon and wondered what the better area was near Piazza del Popolo which is apparently near the River and about 500 metres to Spanish steps or right outside the Lepanto station near the Vatican City.

Your advice would be much appreciated!

Neither hotel is that central, but I'd go with the one near Piazza del Popolo. It's walking distance (a bit long, but we did it) to some nice churches, the Villa Borghese and the Borghese park, the Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain, and you can walk down the Via del Corso from the Piazza to see much of the city.

I sounds like both hotels are on the same metro line, thus you can easily reach those sights that are close to the metro. (many are not)

How long do you stay and what do you like to see? If you are in Rome for one day and your priority is the Vatican, stay there. You can be first in-line to the museum in the morning and enjoy a walk around the lighted St. Peter's square in the evening. But than Lepanto is not the the station closest to the Vatican.

The advantages of Piazza del Popolo have been described by taxatty.

I would say, overall there is a slight advantage for Piazza del Popolo yet both locations require a lot of walking or the use of taxis or public transportation.

Great prices, but even better locations:

Hotel Golden (Family run hotel located one block from Villa Borghese): http://www.hotelgoldenrome.com/en/index.htm

The City's House Hotel (Only 15 units, remodled in 2005, next to the pantheon): http://www.romeby.com/cityhouse/pages/booking.htm

Hotel Navona (Located in Piazza Navona, unbeleivable rates for this location): http://www.hotelnavona.com/eng/home.php

I have booked four rooms for three nights in November at Hotel Navona on the recommendation of my niece who stayed there for a week in May of this year. We got our double rooms for 110 Euros per night (in the off season).

Good luck in your search and have a great time in Rome!

Wow, Hotel Navona looks like a real find! I may have to look into it for my October trip as it's cheaper than the hotel I currently have booked by about 50 euros/night....

What did your niece have to say about it?
