Louise45 Posted August 7, 2007 #1 Share Posted August 7, 2007 I don't understand about the magnetic cards and safes. I've heard somewhere if we use our credit card, it demagnetizes it. Can someone help me? I only have 1 credit card. Will that be a problem? Last time we cruised we chose our own code.

A shopping market card? any card with a magnetic strip will work. Do not use the sign and sail card. That is the one that could become demagnatized and it wont open the safe. If you dont have one of the above--go to the store now and get one. It takes less then 5 minutes to get one.
Flip2cruise Posted August 7, 2007 #3 Share Posted August 7, 2007 It can demagnetize a card. I usually just bring a library, gift, hotel or casino card. Im sure you will have a card with a magnetic strip other than your credit and S&S card. This also explains the process of using the safe. http://travel.webshots.com/photo/2161315810085339509xrqKLS
Louise45 Posted August 7, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted August 7, 2007 I checked and my library and grocery store cards only have a bar code, no magnetic strip. Will that work?
Knights on the Beach Posted August 7, 2007 #5 Share Posted August 7, 2007 No, you need a magnetic strip -- not a bar code. Does your driver's license have one? That's what I use every time we cruise.
vacruizer Posted August 7, 2007 #6 Share Posted August 7, 2007 Go to somewhere like Walmart or Target or the a grocery store and pick up a blank gift card and just don't add any money to it. Free and will have the magnetic stripe. I just use an old used up gift card.
brandymleahy Posted August 7, 2007 #7 Share Posted August 7, 2007 just go to wal-mart and get a gift card, it doesn't cost anything unless you want to load it with$$$

Maxax Posted August 7, 2007 #9 Share Posted August 7, 2007 I'm not really exactly sure of what kind of hocus-pocus demagnetizes your card...if it was really a BIG threat...then ANY card with a magnetic strip that you run through the safe...would be at risk of being demagnetized. If it was that big of a problem...you'd hear about tons of complaints about cards...whether library or otherwise...becoming demagnetized. To my knowledge...you don't hear about that! And maybe I've just gotten incredibly lucky...but I have used a variety of magnetic strip cards...all over the world...in lots of different hotels, resorts, and cruise lines...and I've never had a card become...Demagnetized. To my understanding...what would be the preferred thing to do...would be to NOT use your Sail & Sign card...with its magnetic strip as the card you use in your safe....BECAUSE...if say you had all your valuables...locked up in your safe...and then dropped/lost your Sail & Sign card...then anyone who picked up your card...knows your room number...and instantly has a key to your room and safe. Maxax Posted August 7, 2007 #11 Share Posted August 7, 2007 Sorry, let me clarify...No, you're not a Ditz...your Room No. is not written on the card...but use that card for ANYTHING...and your room number is on every receipt. And you know how many of those things you get on a trip!
mumsyo Posted August 8, 2007 #12 Share Posted August 8, 2007 I use an old casino slot card--one that I don't use any more. So far, and I have been on quite a few Carnival cruises, it has not be demagnitized. I just keep it packed with my cruise stuff. It works fine. Be sure to use the same card each time or else you will not be able to open the safe. Marilyn
