Casino Question for the Gamblers

Recommended Posts

A beginner at blackjack has no effect on the outcome of the game. Maybe in that one hand it appears so, but that "mis-play" may result in you having a blackjack in the next hand.

I completely and totally disagree with this piece of misinformation and will not play with those who do. BTW, my comps from the casino on the last cruise more than covered half my sea pass card.

There have been thousands of computer simulations run that show that in the long run a player making "stupid" mistakes will cause a dealer to bust at about the same rate as he'll cause the dealer to save an otherwise losing hand.

It's just human nature to get steamed about the hands lost because of mis-plays -- those you definitely will remember -- but if a mis-play causes the dealer to bust it's forgiven and forgotten in a second.

I played on a Carnival ship one time and one guy was greaking every rule but he, and the rest of the table just kept winning. The dealer kepy calling him Raymond so I assumed that was his name. But after about 15 minutes of this when the dealer mumbled "I buy my underwear at K'Mart" under his breath I finally figured it out.

In two weeks we are trying Royal Caribbean for the first time.

...so I should expect the dealer to HIT SOFT 17's???? Typically, that is not a good thing.

On a ship (such as the Sovereign) will they have a $25 BJ table open - or will they open one "on request"?

Is there anyway to contact the casino manager (or host) onboard prior to sailing to "pre-introduce" myself for purposes of semi-immediate recognition? I typically play $25-$100 per hand. If I am doing very well, then that might go up to $500 per hand (with up to 2 hands in play).

What are the MAX bets on their $25 tables?

Even playing this way on Carnival, it is hit-or-miss with regard to getting our drinks comped. On some CCL ships, they have given Cheryl a BLANK CHECK for the spa - wine each night at dinner - and multiple nights covered for us in the supper club.... on OTHER CCL ships we might get a drink or two - then are CUT OFF. That REALLY confuses me - as we are polite, friendly/talkative, have good "presentation", and TIP quite well ...

Tom-N-Cheryl, they tipically have a $25.00 table open the first night and wait and see what kind of action they get. The dealers DO hit soft 17's on all RCCL ships. Introduce yourself to the pit staff after you sail, as they are not in there before hand. Max on $25.00 tables is usually $500.00. If you have more than 1 or 2 others playing with you and your all betting higher, you can get them to raise the limits sometimes. One thing in your favor is "European rules" to the effect that you can play from 1 to all open boxes, for a max of 9 hands at a time, unlike American rules that limit you to a max of 2. Also, people (read your wife) can play "behind" your original bet or bets. You still control the cards. The staff is usually pretty accomodating especially when the casino is a little slow. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

A friend of mine is considering joining us on a cruise, however he's a big gambler and wants to know if the casino pays "odds on bets" at the craps tables.. I have no idea what this means so if anyone out there is a craps player, hopefully you can answer my question.

Thanks!

The OP asked about craps.

Two weeks ago on the BOS, we played 2X odds. They may have advertised 2X odds for one night only, but every time I stepped up to the table, I put down a 2X odds bet (pass and come) and they always paid off accordingly.

You might suggest to your friend, however, that he stay alert. The dealers made at least two mistakes I caught (both in favor of the house). One was $5 on BIG RED on a come out roll which I won, and the other not taking my hardway bet 'off' on the come out. Just tell him, he'll understand. Both errors were corrected as soon as I pointed it out, but I was leary after that, which greatly diminished my enjoyment, so I played less.

$5 on BIG RED? Really? Why not play for true odds?

If you are a $25 or $100 BJ player, and can't stand how others mis-play and lose their money, do us a favor and don't play at the $5 table...simple.

Even with continuous shuffle, who cares? As someone pointed out, you only remember the hands lost.

I see it as it's their money and if they don't want to maximize their chance of winning, that's their loss. I win as many times with other's mis-play as "correct play". I only concentrate on how I play MY hand. People that sit down with $20 and play other than optimum strategy won't be there for long anyway.
