last minute decisions-

At the last minute, our waitlisted cabin became available.

Ports are:

Ketchikan

Jeneau

skagway

icy strait point

seward

Not much time for research...can someone list some quick and easy things to do in these ports?

margie

I would at least do an advanced search by title for each port and also look at the ship's shore excursion list. What are you interested in? I can tell you what I am doing in each port (I leave Friday on a weeklong cruise) but if you don't like hiking, photography or whale watching it will be the worst cruise of your life. Perhaps post back here saying how long you have in each port, what your interests are, your cost limitations if any, and perhaps how much time you will have at the end of your cruise in Seward for example.

You can always do free walking tours in each of the ports. Also, Skagway has the NPS office with talks, walks and films. In Seward if at all possible, take the 6 hour Kenai Fjords boat trip. It is worth every penny of the $140 or so that it will cost.

there still could be space available on the ship's excrusions....like whale watching or other things. visitor's center will have local tours for last minute trips. right at the docks you have mt. roberts tram, easy to do if you have the time. the shuttles to mendenhall glacier are around the tram's office, $6 pp each way...very easy to do.

visitor's center, trails, great views of mendenhall

could still get the round-trip train from the cruiseline. my family got tickets the morning of. city tours available with trips to the cemetary or just walk it yourself.

for a combo trip up to the yukon check with

http://www.chilkootcharters.com/ they have many tours, could still have availability on some.

cute little town to just walk around. take a tour or bus out to the totem poles.

juneau and icy straits are good for whale watching, sea life tours. the small, local vendors may be booked up. if they are, go with the ship's tours.

Thank you so much for the replies and the links. I gathering info as quickly as possible since we leave on Fri. There are some circumstances surrounding the reason we are going, but aren't we lucky to be going???

I appreciate any and all recommendations. We may buy a shore excursion or two if available, however, we will probably just be looking for things to do on our own.

Thanks again=greatly appreciated.

Will you happen to be on the Summit SB from Seward? I will be. In any case, check your roll call and even sign up for the connections party. I think you have to do it 3 days before sailing.

What Toyz wrote is helpful. Also, as soon as you get on the ship check the shore excursions and see what is available. Many will still be available but many will sell out the first day or two of the cruise.

No...we are on the Radiance of the Seas...I could not find a roll call for the 8/24 - 8/31 alaska sailing.

Thanks again for the last minute suggestions!!!

When I return, I will explain to you WHY I am making this last minute cruise and it is not just to see Alaska!!! Although, that is a wonderful fringe benefit!!!
