What RCCL ship will sail out of Galveston after Spring 2008?

Recommended Posts

I heard a radio add in Dallas that said to sail Royal Caribbean right out of your own back yard year round on the Voyager of the Seas....

I wasn't sure I heard it right the first time and have been listening for the add again.

I was wondering if anyone else has heard the same add in Texas?????

#1 Will rhapsody be a success in Asia?

Guess the jury is out on that one since they are heavily discounting

#2 WIll Europe remain red hot?

Cruise lines are falling all over each other to get ships to Europe the cost of a cruise versus facing the value of the Euro makes cruising an amazing deal right now (comparatively)

#3 The cost of fuel. Out of Galveston, any cruise ship faces approx a 700 mile outbound and 700 mile return trip.lots of fuel to get to ports

On going interest in the Rapsody. It STILL has no port after it leaves Alaska next summer. Very interesting. You know something is up as no other ship seems stranded like her. We are down to about 1 year out. Now that is odd indeed.

Seems like booking are not doing all that well in Europe for next summer and this winter. We will see though as that could change.

The fuel thingy is an odd one. Seems like it is just as far if not further to leave Miami and go to Cozumel. May just be a wash. However anyone that does not think this is about money can see the lame attempt to put a ship in Panama to sail the southern route. We buy tickets on a plane and they get to save a BUNDLE on fuel from the other starting ports. Oh... and the prices remain the same on the room. Not buying it at all.

Have not heard that the Voyager is staying, and don't think it is. BUT.... stuff happens.

Here is a thought for RCCL.... If you position ONE ship in the Gulf year round, (Houston, Galveston, New Orleans... pick one)you will by default keep it full. When there were 2-4 I can understand booking being a bit thin. Just a thought for RCCL.

Keep yer eye on Houston. New port, no ship. I bet they will offer some GREAT deals to get any ship there. Lets hope it is RCCL or Celebrity.

Yep. Heard it the other day in the Houston area. It is touting the arrival of Voyager in Galveston but says "sail Royal Caribbean year round" out of your own backyard (not just Voyager). That's how I heard it anyway.

I yelled, "LIAR!!!!!" when the commercial was over (as I'm driving alone to work in my car). :p

I only heard it the one time. Been listening for it but it hasn't aired again that I've heard.

I heard the same ad on the Houston radio on Wednesday morning. I thought it was interesting because it was a Royal Caribbean ad, not a travel agency ad. As a matter of fact I was so surprised by it that I called my husband and almost got in an accident...I definitely can't drive and talk at the same time!:o

Was it on the morning show on KLUV? I heard one while I was in the shower but didn't hear the details, but I thought i heard "year round"

Any news on this topic?

Does anyone know of a petition that we could sign to keep a RCCL cruise ship in Galveston or Houston. I can't see how they are losing money because everytime we go(about every 3 months) the ship is full. This is my first time on cruise critic and love it. Still feeling my way around. Next cruise is September 14 on the Radiance (Crown & Anchor cruise) 14 days:) Can't wait to hear from some of you.

At dinner, with a high ranking RCI person.

Comments (no, not looking for an argument from others, this is what the man said!)

Galveston:

Fuel costs

Low onboard spending in gift shops and bars and tours

Casino: average per ship: $20,000 per day, Rhapsody- $2,000

Disagree all you want that is what he said.

As for the casino, I guess Texans had already spent the other $18,000 in Shreveport.

Jim

I had two high ranking CCL people tell me a few years ago that the Liberty was coming to Galveston. We know that didn't happen. I wouldn't believe anything any high ranking cruise people said. IMHO-for what it's worth.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the Rhapsody back in the months that the Voyager isn't here which was the plan before the Asia mess.

I'm not looking for an argument either. But who is this horse?!

You can keep preaching it but I'm not buying it.

Hear, hear! I truly believe the main problem right now is too many markets, not enough ships. If the Asian market fizzles, that could be a boon for Galveston.

I just do not believe RCCL is going to abandon the Galveston/Houston market permanently.

Call it wishful thinking, if you wish...

Jim's comments have been stated before. I can see some of the points as we go to Cozumel and just do our own thing there. Same in most of the port except Jamaica. Little money from me on tours. Don't care for the Casino due to the smokeing. I would rather shop the small stores in Cozumel than the ship stores, not that the ship stores don't have some nice stuff from time to time.

I can see the point, but find it hard to belive it is really that bad ONLY on the ship from Galveston. I bet some of the ships from Miami have the same problem with frequent cruisers. If they chose ports like... Jamaica, Belieze, Guatamala... I would be forced to take the ship tours I guess. Clean up the air in the casino and I might drop a few coins. (Might)

Bottom line is I bet the stockholders have been howling at the company for a stock price that has not done much over the last few years. Indeed in 2006 it fell to some low levels. The bean counters will be in charge for a long time to come.

True. Mostly by him. Over and over. Ad naseum to those of us who wish to cling on to a glimmer of hope. ;)

And while I'm sure some of those points are valid, I don't believe they will cause RCCL to abandon the Galveston/Houston year round market permanently.

I still believe RCCL will be back here in a year round capacity within a couple of years after these other "hot" markets start cooling down.

As I've said before, call it wishful thinking if you wish. But I'm hanging on to it no matter how many people try to rain on my parade!! :p ;)

I guess only time will tell.

"Ad naseum???"

Sorry I disgust you!

Sadly, the fact that we do not like the facts, does not alter the facts. I would prefer for Rhapsody to stay for years to come. I would love to see Galaxy return. But it probably will not happen.

I will alter my verbage in the future to keep you from being ill.:D

Can't speak to the other issues, but fuel cost is a silly excuse. Cruises sail from New Orleans. Same distance, same fuel costs. Charleston, SC for crying out loud. What a waste of fuel that is vs. Miami or Tampa. The fuel cost excuse doesn't fly.
