Getting Cash in The Casino

3% advance fee.

Here is a trick, you can "buy" yourself casino chips on personalizer with NO fee in advance.

The number is substantial, as I recall it is $1500 per day $5000 per cruise per charge card/person. If you both register with a CC individually, it would be two times that amount. If you are planning to play (lose) more than $10,000 please email me, I have a poker game I would like to invite you to.

Does Princess charge any type of fee for drawing cash on your sailing card from the casino? Also, what is the daily limit and is it per person or per account?

Thanks,

Lori

LOL, I'd love to come to the poker game! Although, I must warn you, my stakes will be substantially less than 10K! I was hoping we'd play for pennies.

If you purchase chips, are you obligated to use any of them at the tables before cashing in?

I'm sure we'll do a small amount of gambling at the casino while on board. But I'm just thinking of a backup plan in case cash gets low and I don't have to scramble around looking for an ATM.

Thanks,

Lori

No, you are not obligated to play the chips at a table, you can use them as little round cash substitutes (which I do). The link for casino chips is a bit harder to find than one might think so here you go.

lete me make sure I've got this right. If I want to bring $$ with me for my european cruise, I'd be better off not carrying all that cash (and forget about travelers checks b'c they're not as convenient to use as they once were), I could "gift" myself a few $100 casino chips then just cash them in for USD at the cage... then walk to the ATM machine on board and change them over to Euros? Is that how it would work? and I could hedge that bet by bringing a personal check and making it payable for $250 and cash that at the pursers desk for USD which I could exchange at the ATM machine on board - or do I need to always use a credit card for the onboard exchange?

am I missing something?

Can you exchange it back to cash at the casino without a fee ? You pay this "gift" with your credit card, right ? doesn't it become a cash advance on your credit card ?

Chips can be cashed in at the casino any time they are open. These are not special chips marked for play only. No it isn't a cash advance, it is charged as a purchase.

Don't know, my guess is yes as you didn't use them. I never buy them until well within the no cancellation period close the sailing.

This seems like a good idea. What happens if you have to cancel your cruise? Will Princess refund your money for "gifts"?

This would probably be a way for people who have a lot of shipboard credit, but don't drink or do excursions to get the cash. We had a large gift credit our first cruise and was concerned as to whether they would refund the difference.(turned out to be a mute point).

Incidently if there was an overage, would that remain for your next cruise?

No, the casino chips you charge online before cruising are not payable with OBC, that you have to take out at the 3% fee.

Mute point is actually Moot point. I used to spell it that way too.

Overage does NOT roll over which is why we cash out known extra $$ in the casino prior to getting off.

I just purchased myself some casino chips for my upcoming cruise. It is both my casino budget for the week and a place to get ready cash for nothing........

I did notice that there was $1,000 per passenger limit for purchasing the chips in advance.

You mean there is a 3% fee on board to get casino chips. I have never heard of that on the other cruise lines I have been on. Do they not get enough of my money when I lose it?

I guess I need to check into this advance purchase thing. Thanks for the tip.

There is no fee to get chips, there is a fee to get a cash advance on your card. You can buy chips for no fee with cash or travelers checks/card.

Thanks for the reply. Let me make sure I have it straight. In order to get chips you have to have cash, travelers checks or take a cash advance from your shipboard card. You cannot just use your shipboard card to get chips without paying the 3%. Do I have it right now?

Yes, using the card for chips (which are redeamable for cash) is viewed as a cash advance (unless you buy them ahead of time see above link). Most companies that accept CC's roll the fees they pay into the cost of good, since cash has no markup, they would lose money to sell you cash on your cruise card which is paid via a credit card.

Thanks again. I will check on the above link to prebuy some chips. This is new to me. This is why I love this board. All other cruise lines I have been on would let you put the chips on your card without a fee. Sure am glad I found about this before we got there.

Thanks again.
