May be worth watching if you are onboard or in the area

Totally forgot!

Will be visiting mum at Dunoon that week, we can pop over on the Western yippee!

BTW

Look out for the Cross of Lorraine on Lyle Hill, if you're lucky (very lucky) it wont be raining.

Its a monument on Lyle Hill and on a nice day you might see it from the ship, its big and white.

The main inscription reads.....

"This monument is dedicated to the memory of the sailors of the Free French Naval Forces who sailed from Greenock in the years 1940-1945 and gave their lives in the battle of the Atlantic for the liberation of France and the success of the Allied cause."

http://www.activitypoint.co.uk/cgi-bin/list.cgi?r=greenock&e=1944(CrossofLorraine)

And from this website http://freespace.virgin.net/mike.mackenzie2/FreFrnch.htm

In April 1940 the French Destroyer MAILLÉ BRÉZÉ (2400 tons), named after a French Admiral (1618-1646), blew up off Greenock with heavy loss of life following an accident involving her own torpedoes.

Although this disaster occurred before the Free French Naval Forces were established, many people tend to regard the Cross of Lorraine on Lyle Hill in Greenock as a memorial to the loss of the MAILLÉ BRÉZÉ as well as to the later losses of the Free French naval vessels.

Mum who comes from Greenock remembers seeing this ship blowing up when she was a child.

OMG thank you for that information as we will be in Edinburgh that day! Guess that takes care of what we'll be doing on Thursday.:D

As someone else has stated you are in Edinburgh. The easiest way to get to Greenock is train from Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street, Transfer to Glasgow Central (1o min walk or shuttle bus), train from Glasgow Central upper level to Greenock see http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/rtt/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=CPC and also http://www.spt.co.uk/. If you wanted to sail around behind the QE2 see http://www.calmac.co.uk/qe2-cruise-on-mv-saturn.html or http://www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk/events.htm

If more than 2 travelling see http://www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/content/travelinfo/ticketsandfares.php?pageid=00000000007&ms=sub

Should add that the coach may be cheaper from Edi to Gla but train is far easier

Assuming they get QE2 fixed...

I will be onboard Balmoral as she escorts QE2 out to sea in the evening. Should be great, can't wait! I'll be with my Mum and best pal, both of whom are scheduled to travel with me on board at Christmas and next August.

QE2 is presently sailing in the Adriatic Sea according to the webcam, and BBC story has been updated.

Hooray!

Karie,

who is very much relieved and hopes no permanent damage!
