coffee39 Posted September 12, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2007 Can anyone tell me how long the train ride from Denali to Whittier is. We have booked through Princess but have not received an itinerary yet and I am just wondering what time we would be arriving at the ship. Thanks
Jebbear Posted September 12, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 12, 2007 We were on the Whittier to Denali train. Departed Whittier 8:00 am and arrived Denali 6:00 pm. The scenery is beautiful from Whittier to Anchorage, we saw Dall Sheep, Moose and Beluga Whales. Rest your eyes from Anchorage to Talkeetna. Then the scenery begins again! Seating on Princess cars is at a table. Not a lot of room. My husband spent most of his time on the outside viewing area taking pictures.
Budget Queen Posted September 12, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 12, 2007 10 hours. By far the most scenic portion is only the last 2 hours. Especially if McKinley is not viewable, it is a LOT of trees and many sections. Princess also has table seating, so two ride backward the entire trip. LisaH Posted September 12, 2007 #4 Share Posted September 12, 2007 We thoroughly enjoyed our 9 hour train ride from Denali to Whittier. We sat backwards and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have back problems and found the seating to be quite comfortable. I would do it again any day!
Great Sky Girl Posted September 12, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 12, 2007 We were on the train in May this year Denali to Whittier. The 9 hour ride turned into 11 hours:eek: . The scenery was gorgeous. Mt. McKinley was out and we viewed her for a few hours. We saw 4 sightings of grizzlies, moose, swans and a porcupine!! HOWEVER, the train really rocked and rolled and I got sicker than a dog! The staff were so nice and concerned and purchased a dramamine for me that worked, even though I took if AFTER I was feeling sick. The best thing was I did not loose my breakfast and when the chief guy interviewed me, he then sighed relief. I would not have been able to board the ship as they would suspect the "virus". Everyone else had a great time, but I thought it would never end. The best thing was Princess staff boarded and took all our information and we got our cruise cards, so when we arrived in Whittier we just walked off the train and onto the ship in minutes. It was after 7 pm and I had not had anything to eat (couldn't) so by the time we found the restaurant and received our food I would have eaten anything. We were newbies and did not know about the buffet...do now!
