SailBadtheSinner Posted September 28, 2012 #27 Share Posted September 28, 2012 where is the bus stop from the dock?thanks Walk due east from the tender dock to the first street (America's cup Ave) you come to. Turn north (left) and walk one block north until you come to the Newport Gateway Center and you would board the bus there. SBtS
mtsnd1900 Posted September 29, 2012 #28 Share Posted September 29, 2012 Here is a great deal, available for purchase for the next 8 days, that is a great time and excursion to do without the ship, and save you a bunch of money. http://www.travelzoo.com/local-deals/Providence/Other/26376 $115 for a helicopter tour for up to 3 people to fly you over Newport, including the mansions - and a video is included. This is a popular thing down here, especially for those who enjoy photography. Even if the sale is over (50% off) look the company up and try it out. cruiseri Posted October 2, 2012 #30 Share Posted October 2, 2012 I live in Newport, perhaps I can help and clarify some of what has been written- Your ship on 10/24 is scheduled to arrive at 10 AM. Newport is a tender port. The name of the hotel/restaurant that was mentioned as being at the start of Cliff Walk is named The Chandler, now. Very upscale now and moderately expensive. You will not get a view of the harbor from here as it faces east. Been there for dinner many times, very good food. Never tried lunch but should be equally as good. To get there walk about 1 1/2 miles from the pier (where the tenders drop you off) across to Memorial Blvd (south), then up (a slight hill) on Memorial to Bellevue and then continue on Memorial (east) down the hill to the Cliff Walk. You'll walk past St. Mary's where John and Jackie where married. Many other places directly on the harbor in Newport include The Mooring, Black Pearl, 22 Bowen's, and while not on the water (a block up) The Brick Alley Pub. Oceancliff is another restaurant but about 5-6 miles away on Ocean Drive. There is a Hertz Local Edition station maybe 3-4 blocks up from the pier. as the 24th is a Wednesday they should be open from about 8 AM until 5 PM. To get to the two big Vanderbilt mansions or the Tennis Hall of fame take bus 67 from the Visitor's Center which is next door to the Marriott Hotel (which itself is down the street from the tender pier). The harbor master should have a small kiosk manned where they are giving out Newport maps just as you get off the tenders. Enjoy.
Wandering Writer Posted October 22, 2012 #31 Share Posted October 22, 2012 We found everything very accessible from the tender dock. Information booth close by was very helpful. Here's some pics and info about what we did on our own: Port of Call - Newport, RI
