Question for aplmac or anyone who knows.

We would like to visit Medford Mahogany after our morning dive. Can you tell me how far it is from the ship and if taxis are usually available? How long might it take us to get there, look for something nice and return?

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Medford Mahogany has an outlet in Pelican Village

a local handicraft market

about a quarter mile outside the gates of our harbour complex

so you can easily walk back to the harbour

once you've bought your mahogany birds,etc.

 

 

Pottery?

I should think the stores in Pelican Village have all that sorta stuff,

pottery, straw and basket weaving stuff, the works!

I can't accurately answer your question re. drive-time from dive-site to Medford,

but unless you're diving at some extreme end of the island(unlikely)

I'd allow for half-an-hour? as a wild guesstimate?

Incidentally, there's a local joke on tourists

where some smartass beach vendor sold some tourist guy

a 'mahogany bird' in a matchbox.

 

After the tourist guy paid up,

he discovered he'd acquired a cockroach in matchbox..

..ha ha kinda corny, but don't be surprised if you hear it.

That's kinda in the middle of the island,

on the way to Harrison's Caves, if you're headed that way...

 

but yes, there's gotta be pottery available

at one of the craft stores in Pelican Village,

where Medford Mahogany have an outlet.

So much for the information and great pictures! We will actually be leaving from the ship. We are diving in the AM, so we will have about two hours or so to do some shopping. Do you think Pelican Village is our best option?

When you say you're leaving from the ship

I'm assuming the local dive-boat is picking up your dive party,

alongside the cruise ship??

I thought they stopped that, post 9/11 etc. -maybe I'm wrong.

 

Anyway, whatever.. there's shopping at the Port(within the Port complex)

as well as Pelican Village not far away.

Yes, for a quick shop nearby it's probably your best bet, if you're into handicraft.

 

I don't think they do jewellery and cameras

if you're looking for that sorta thing

(that's Sint Maarten!)

I'm thinking that if perhaps your dive is somewhere down the West Coast

maybe you'll stop at Holetown, where there's also shopping to be had.

Bear that in mind, just in case?
