Pet Peeves

On the other hand the incessant singing "Happy Birthday" or "Happy Anniversary" got a little old on our last cruise. Once it was sang to one table it seemed to follow with several others each night.

On my cruise last fall I sat down next to a lady whose birthday was the same day mine was, thinking what are the odds of this, so we agreed to order drinks and they brought out little cupcakes and sang happy birthday.

Well, they left and the lady next to my sister on my right said it was her birthday yesterday. She said her husband called the cruiseline to let them know so it would be set up and she wouldnt have to tell the waiter, well the cruiseline didnt tell the waitstaff. lol

She was so livid they were removing all the tips for the dining room folks and only tipping their cabin steward. I kid you not thats what she said. We immediately got our waiter back and explained this lady being so upset to be left out of the happy birthday singing, they came back with her cupcake thingee and sang, but it might have been too late to get her from being upset about them not doing it from her husband setting it up.

Kids running in the hallways.

People who can't use their inside voice to have a discussion of the day in thal hall by your room.

The way they display pictures and everyone blocks the aisles looking for theirs.

Sneers from staff when you present your soda card. Didn't happen at all on the Inspiration thank goodness.

Seat saving in the show room.

Non smokers complaining about smoke when they sit in the smoking area.

TONS of perfume or cologne and they sit next to you.

Farting through the entire show. This happened to us this week on the Inspiration. The lady let loose throughout the show. My son left. I have no idea what the show was. I pity those on her plane ride home.

After reading so many threads about how rude and demanding people are at the purser's desk, I went to the desk and told them I'm on Cruise Critic all the time and how people feel about the nasty passengers who are so rude BUT that I found a typo in the Capers--Pary instead of Party--and demanded 50% off my next cruise or I was going to let them have it! They laughed their heads off and promised to go to Cruise Critic and see what it was about.

Parents who conveniently forget that they brought their 3 children (who were raised by wolves) on board. Actually that is an insult to wolves...wolves would have done a much better job!!

OH I so agree with you! On our cruise last year there was a very large group of people from another country..VERY LARGE...They let their children run amock specially the little boys..One boy that was about 8 years old actually cut in line, jumped up and stood on the Deli Counter to get the servers attention..I am always amazed at how some parents do not keep their children under control when traveling..

Oh I have another one..People who stop in the middle of a walkway and have a chat instead of moving to one side or the opther so people can pass..When you say excuse me so you can pass they act like you are rude..

Wow this thread is pretty old!

My biggest all time pet peeve is the people that take the elevator 1 or 2 decks!! I can not believe how lazy some people are! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. :p Some of you could use the walk trust me. ;)

The thing is, you can't tell by looking at someone why they might NEED to take the elevator up one or two decks. I have fairly severe arthritis in both knees. I'm 50 years old and don't walk with a limp or a cane, but stairs HURT, especially going up. If I did the stairs 4 or 5 times a day I'd be in agony. :(

I take exception to these remarks. I am 50 years old, work out 4 days aweek to include walking on a tread mill and a stationary bike. I have a bad knee, it does not affect my walking running or anything at all except walking up stairs......I do it as much as I can but sometimes on a cruise it gets to be more difficult. Sometimes even 1 or 2 flights will be hard. So if you see me take the elevator you can kiss my A**.

Wow I feel better!! :p

Did it ever occur to you that although some people may look fine to you, they indeed have trouble navigating stairs? Welcome to my world of living with fibromyalgia and your judgemental and snippy comments are totally uncalled for! Ever hear of compassion??

I agree- I have a bad hip, even though I dont look infirmed.

My only peeve is the dirty smelly life jackets they expect you to wear for muster drill.

No..... I wouldn't worry about the dirt in a genuine emergency, and of course I realise the muster drills are very necessary.... but standing around wallowing in somebody else's dirt and sweat is very unpleasant!!:(

My new number one pet peeve!!!! Ewwwwww....again....ewwwwww:eek:

i'm suprised nobody has mentioned this yet. Am I the only one who hates seeing people walk into the dining room wearing shorts and tshirts on formal night? I, personally, enjoy dressing up in a dark suit and spending the evening in formal wear. I had commented to a guy who was in a rock t-shirt on formal night "I like your tux". He replied "Hey, I paid $2000 for this cruise, Im going to where what I want where I want to wear it".

The patio door slamming thing is quite annoying. We're late sleepers and dealt with it on our last cruise. *SLAM* IM UP!.

I rather enjoy the singing/dancing wait staff. I think it just adds to the "fun" environment.

OK, I know I may get completely attacked for saying this, but I hate the scooters. I understand there are disabled people who like to cruise, but if you can't walk your ass around the cruise ship, then use a wheelchair. Some people on those things have no control and I actually had my foot run over by one of those and had 3 bones broken in my foot. I think they should be banned from use on the ship, I understand that if you want to go long distances off the ship that is fine, they should be stored downstairs to be picked up when you are going ashore, otherwise, when on the ship they should not be in use. Some people are just downright dangerous and reckless on them.

My number one pet peeve is rudeness to the disabled. Now I fully understand that a lot of disabled are horribly rude themselves. But I frequently cruise with my Dad, retired on disability in his mid-50s.

We sat down at a Lido deck table that hadn't been cleaned (there were no other tables available). Some guy at another table no less starting screaming that the people from that table were coming back, and how stupid and rude we were

Also on Lido...Dad had his scooter. Some guy had come back to the table claiming that he'd saved it with, get this, an empty water glass!

The first woman starts screaming at him to stop when he's still several inches away from her. She huffs off around the scooter and into the other wall. The elevator stops at their floor. One of the others starts running her mouth.

I'm starting to appreciate why the handicapped are sometimes rude. They have to be so that they are treated with decency considering their limitations. My FIL is in a wheelchair, my MIL pushes him. On the Mariner a woman turned around in the Promenade and walked right into him while shopping the sale tables. SHE had the nerve to say she was sick and tired of all these wheelchairs in the way all over the ship! My MIL said, "You may be in one yourself someday."

I have to second the pet peeve about the pictures. I find it very annoying that most of the pictures are only available in 8x10. I would much rather get 5x7s.

The problem I have with the photographers is that the pictures they take of me never look like me. I know I look better than that. :D

While I have respect for those "less mobile", and will do my best to allow ample space, I do have to relate an experience on the Miracle in the dining room: An elderly woman in a powered scooter must have thought she was driving a bulldozer! ANYONE in her way was run into and very rudely told to "get out of the way"! This was nightly and we did our very best after the first night to avoid that route. Lots of other PAX complained, too. From talking to others, this behaviour was not limited to the dining room:mad:

I just hate it when the kids who are not supposed to be in the hot tubs are jumping and splashing with parent's no where to be seen. (or worse when the parents are there and do nothing)

Paying for drinks in the casino.

Dancing Waitstaff when my desert hasn't been delivered.

Line Jumpers

Seat Savers

Drunken Foul mouth passengers when kids are around.

Waiting for tenders if you're not on a Cruise line excursion.

Disembarkation Chaos.

I can't say I have any pet peeves in relation to cruising, but rather "observations of multiple inconsiderate acts".

These are things I saw more than once, which made me wonder whether or not these people were brought up to behave the way they did, or were simply stupid:

1) Hogging chairs early in the morning, for use in the late morning or afternoon. Chairs that they expected to be able to throw a towel or shoe on, and expect to be saved for them for the following 4 or 5 or 6 hours when they were ready for them.

2a) Parents, leaving their children screamingly unsupervised, running amok, peeing in the pools, messing around in the elevators, running in the halls.

2b) Children of abovementioned parents, sitting in hot tubs, steeping their diapers like teabags in the warmish bacteria laden water. Yuck.

3) Middle of the night door slammers.

4) People who treat the employees like dirt beneath their feet. My theory is that these same people who act like spoiled Hollywood children are all McDonald's employees who are sick of asking people "You want fries with that?" every day, all day long. Not that there is anything wrong with a good honest job such as flipping burgers. Just don't act like you're king of all if you ain't.

5) There is not enough singing and dancing in the dining room. Really. Nothing like a good conga line going on between the main course and dessert.

That all said, I cannot WAIT for our next cruise. The above observations absolutely had no bearing on the outcome of my cruise, they were simply things that stuck in my mind as repetitive acts which were committed on a regular basis that I believed to be either rude / inconsiderate / just plain nasty and wrong (Pamper's tea, anyone?).

We just returned today from the Mexican Riviera on the Pride.

* I love the singing in the dinign room. These guys are not entertainers, they are waiters, and I think it's cute that they get up and sing. Last night they sang a goodbye song and I actually got tears in my eyes.

* I hate the brats on board, too. I have 2 kids (13 and 15) and ever since they were little they have always been well behaved. Why? Beacuse we TAUGHT them to act appropriately in restaurants, other people's homes, etc. The brats are brats because their parents don't tell them no.

* I hate the push to pay the maitre 'd a tip. This man came to our table the first night ONLY ... said "hi, my name is _____". There is NO WAY we are tipping someone that didn't do anything for us. A bunch of BS. When I was growing up my mom took my sister and I on 3 cruises. I always remember the maitre 'd walking around EVERY NIGHT to greet everyone, ask how their day was. Thte last 3 cruises I've been on they don't !!!!!!!!!

* The night of the Gala Buffet we had an opportunity to walk thru for pics only. The people in front of me felt th eneed to pose with EVERY single carved watermelon, ice sculpture, and dessert. It's like "enough already ... it's not that big of a deal. Take a picture and move on".

* I also don't agree with the inflated excursion prices. We did the Canopy Adventure in Puerto Vallarta. WE paid $130 a person or somehting like that ..... but the actual price of the excursion was $80. $50 inflation per person? That's ridiculous.

On our Valor cruise this past January, the Maitre 'd did not ONCE come to our table. The only time I saw him was on the last night, when, of course, we were all expected to tip him for his efforts. We did, of course, but I resented it. We also very generously tipped our servers, but they went above and beyond to make sure our meals were an experience to remember!

LHP, I am still laughing at your post. But how very true that wolves do a better job at keeping their children in line than many parents do in public. My husband and I worked in tandum with our children and they never gave us any grief in public. Wish more parents would watch closely and give attention to what their children are into! Thanks for the laugh!!!
