E1 vs D1

Hey all,

My family and I are going on Serenade of the Seas December 21st and I noticed that the E1 my parents are in is more expensive than a D1 on the same deck. Mom wants to know what the difference is. I told her that it is larger than the one she is in now...and cheaper! She just wants to make sure she is not moving to a room that is not as good as the one she is in now. What can I tell her about the differences in category? I know you guys know way more than I do!:)

I have been in both categories on Serenade and her sister Brilliance. I would take the D in a heartbeat as long it is in a good location. I would take either 9544 or 9630 with my preference being 9630 as 9544 is too far forward for my tastes though you might like it. The other two rooms are connecting rooms and I try to stay away from those.

I was just on the Serenade in August and it is a wonderful ship, if you want to see pictures click on the link in my signature.

Usually it is location, location, location :D

Not when it comes to the difference between the D and the E. The D is a larger cabin than the E. And usually, the D is MORE expensive. So the fact that they are getting a D cabin for less puzzles me. But that extra 25 sqft in the D vs the E is well worth it, imo.

Thanks guys! I was also surprised that the D1 was cheaper than the E1. I am going to show my mom this thread to reassure her that she is getting a better cabin. She loves to cruise but has not become addicted to cruisecritic like i have! I have learned so much from these boards that my family comes to me for cruise questions! :)

Hi Sue ...

Just reading your post and wondered what is your aversion to forward cabins , we are in 9532 on Liberty of the seas soon which is very near the front.... what can i expect?

Also, most of the E cabins have a small loveseat(more like an oversized armchair) while most of the D cabins have a full-sized sofa in the sitting area. I would agree with Sue L (poster above) in choice of cabin. That 25 sq. feet of extra room does make a difference.

alittlenauti... I can't answer for Sue, but for me, if there is any rough weather or motion of the ship, I feel it more the more forward I go. There is nothing wrong with forward cabins if the motion of the ocean does not bother you. On some of the older ships, you will hear the anchor (and it is loud!)and/or bow thrusters when coming into port. This early morning noise is much more noticeable in the more forward cabins. The Liberty I'm sure has the new azipod(not sure about that terminology) system, so the anchor/bow thruster noise should not be a problem for you.

I just always prefer midship to the back. We have had forward cabins twice and both times we had issues with noise from the anchor, thrusters, etc. But in those rooms we were pretty far down on like deck 2 or 3. On deck 9 you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for all the help guys! We called and changed the cabin to the D1 9544 this morning. We had already had one price reduction of $90 pp for parents cabin and then by switching to the D1 we got a bigger room and another price reduction of $80 pp! I only know about price reduction credit because of these boards! You guys are the best!

You are right, I was thinking about the different between E1s and E2s, & D1s and D2s, sorry! We stayed in an E2 and a D1 and the difference in size is noticeable. Thanks for setting me straight :D

On our Freedom cruise, we had a E1 cabin. Our friends 2 doors away had a D1. I was really surpised at how much of a difference it really made. I have decided that I will never do an E cabin again. But on Mariner, I decided to go all the way to a GS. lol.

If D1's are cheaper, it means they have too many unsold D1s so they lowered the price (temporarily) to sell some.

Thats ok right now on our cruise for the Mariner Oct 19th 2008 the E1 are more then the D1 ...but I have an aft cabin 8690 and did get it before the price went up for the E1. But the couch is smaller like someone said. And with that difference if you have that 3rd person they are in a bunk bed above your bed...that took a little getting use to and didn't bother us like we thought it was going to, because we had this same room just this last time on the Mariner 9/30/07 and loved it since it was a corner aft and larger balcony. It would be the only way I would take an E1 over a D1!:D

Do you have any pictures of 8690? I'd love to see what that looks like. I have been a Carnival fan so far (don't hold that against me, please:confused: ), but wanted to take a look at RC and see what they have to offer to try something new.

My wife and I cruised to Alaska aboard the Radiance this September. We had a balcony cabin (E) more amidships, as we were advised these cabins are most stable in rough weather. We originally had an E cabin on a lower deck more aft, and switched to one one deck higher to be in this position.

The higher you go, the rougher your ride in an angry sea. Picture the ship as a pendulum. When the ships swings, the higher you are the greater the angle from one side to another.

Still, no ride is as bad as on a tender or a Pilot or Coast Guard escort boat in rough seas.
