weloverunning Posted October 29, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 29, 2007 We will be in Barbados in a couple weeks with our 5 children. Would you please be kind enough to give me exact walking directions from the cruise ship pier to The Boatyard? About how far is it? My hubby gets nervous about not knowing exactly how to get somewhere when we are in a foreign country. Our kids are 27, 25, 25, 20 and 15. I know after reading all of your posts, they will have a great time at the Boatyard. Thank you so much for taking the time to help out so many. I wish there was one person like you at every port. It would make it a lot easier.:D
Aplmac Posted October 29, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 29, 2007 We will be in Barbados in a couple weeks with our 5 children. Would you please be kind enough to give me exact walking directions from the cruise ship pier to The Boatyard? About how far is it? ===> a mile and a bit, all told! Our kids are 27, 25, 25, 20 and 15. ===> those aren't kids! - (but) they will have a great time at the Boatyard. OK people! Make your way to the main Gatehouse of the Bridgetown Harbour, smile to the nice Policeman on your way out...you'll see a roundabout there - keep straight. Walk on the right side of the road, and you'll be walking walk along the water (that's the very bottom end of Carlisle Bay, where there's no beach at all - yet!) That 'walk' ..under some trees.. is called Trevor's Way.. you may see a sign saying T's Way, but I'm not sure. Don't ask who Trevor was, can't help you there... keep walking straight for about half mile, til you get to Hinks Street, with big warehouses, painted brightly these days. Keep walking along Hinks Street....oh wait a minute I just found you a brilliant Map of Bridgetown,Barbados, at URL http://www.caribbean-on-line.com/br/btmap.shtml which you really should take a look at, while you read my suggestions. Sure I've attached it, but that's just too small to read anything, so please do visit the website and have a look at the biig version (you may want to Save the image and print it out??) You'll notice it's just one long straight line from the Customs Hall, inside the Port complex, thru the Gatehouse(don't forget the Policeman!) along Trevor's Way, past Pelican Village(on the other side of the road) along Princess Alice Hiway(Hinks Street) until you come to Immigration Dept. on that map? All these names in Orange are listed on that map - just join the dots! At that point there's a pleasant boardwalk with green-painted railings that'll take you along the edge of the River, right up to the Bridge(after which the town is named), National Heroes Sq. on your map. ..with an ARCH at its far end. Nice boats moored all along the river's edge, huh! Cross the bridge and you should find a RastaMan with a lil stall set up under the Arch, he carves and sells calabsh items (Calabash is a kinda gourd thing, except it grows on a tree) - you're nearly there! Either he or the guy who sells fruit there.. will point you the way to Boatyard's bright yellow wall, up Bay Street about 300yds off in the distance, straight ahead as usual. Once you get there, the $15 per person they charge for day rate also gets you a ride back to the ship, so you won't even need to re-trace your steps. Please get back to me if any of this is confusing. I think the key to comprehension here is that great hi-def MAP at http://www.caribbean-on-line.com/br/btmap.shtml finding those place names and "connectiong the dots" as suggested earlier! Aplmac Posted October 29, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 29, 2007 I've also found a neat inter-active (with Google Earth?) map at http://barbados.org/maps_google.htm?mapPoint=268 I'm using the little hand-cursor to drag the Google Earth aerial-photo-map within the dotted-line frame on that webpage.. ..but then I have Google Earth installed on this computer so there may be some interconnectivity between my browser and that application?.. ..thus I'm not sure if you'll get the same cool function as I'm getting but do give it a try! If it works, you can use this feature along with the large-detail MAP I suggested in my post above and with my directions ...to 'make it real'. If it doesn't work for you you might want to download and install Google Earth (it's a GAS!) http://earth.google.com/ then you can check out everywhere on the face of the planet starting with your own backyard right down to Boatyard and their long pier sticking out into Carlisle Bay! weloverunning Posted October 30, 2007 Author #4 Share Posted October 30, 2007 Aplmac: You're the greatest. The google map is the best!! I'm glad I clicked on Pelican Village and the other markings. We will stop on the way to the Boatyard since I am sure we will take advantage of the free ride back after a long day in the sun and water. :D Now, we have one port under our belt. If I can ever help you with information about Palm Beach County, FL, don't hesitate to ask.

If I can ever help you with information about Palm Beach County, FL, don't hesitate to ask. ===> Thanks for the offer. Yes, stopping at Pelican Village on the way to Boatyard is a good idea! In that case, when you exit the Gatehouse of the port you'll want to walk that road on the left side, rather than on the right(Trevor's Way), since P.Village is on that left hand side! Hope this is all "adding up" for you,by now? _______________________________________ When you get to Boatyard, here's what the beach looks like (these 2 pics were taken from right next door at that lobster place).. That's Boatyard's private pier, in the first shot and that's Hilton Hotel off in the distance, in the second shot.
weloverunning Posted November 26, 2007 Author #6 Share Posted November 26, 2007 We found the Boatyard without any trouble thanks to you:D I did use your maps to mark landmarks as we were going along to make sure we were going the right way. We had a great day there especially once they put the rope swing up!!
