How do you carry cash on flights?

Maybe I am missing something, but why exactly do you need this much cash?

Karen - confused.

You need more than that if going to the Med for 10 days and two people are doing private tours. All the guides want cash. We also paid our hotel in Cash and saved 10%.

I put all my DH stuff in my purse before we get to security line. He goes thru security first and then I put my purse through the xray machine. That way he is on the other side and can make sure no one "accidently" picks up my purse and walks off with it.

I saw a show on 20/20 (or one of those programs) about a group of professional crooks that make a living off picking up purses and briefcases from airport security lines.

The inconsistency of TSA has probably allowed you to gather your belongings.

I wasn't speaking from personal experience, as every time I've been selected for secondary screening I have been travelling with someone else who grabbed my bags for me.

According to TSA rules, if you are selected for secondary screening, you are NOT allowed to touch your possessions after you have been chosen. The inconsistency of TSA has probably allowed you to gather your belongings. But the RULES state that TSA cannot allow ANYONE except a TSA employee to touch the belongings of a person chosen for secondary screening until the screening is completed and the person is released from TSA. This is also the time that more laptops and purses disappear than any other time.

Paper money can be kept in your pockets-that's where mine stays. And I don't own a purse. If it doesn't fit in blazer/pants/coat pockets, I just don't need it on my person.

I was separated from my purse in a TSA screening line. I kept asking where it was and was told it was fine. It wasn't. A woman TSA employee helped me look at the people who were seated to put their shoes back on and found my purse by an elderly man who thought it was his wife's bag.

I was darn lucky!

You are very lucky that you did not get yelled at or detained/interrogated further. Not only is secondary screening designed to check your person, but more often than not, your possessions.

I have seen TSA turn into the Gestapo for grabbing bags/possessions belonging to another person chosen for secondary. Saw someone at LAX (TBIT) grab their partner's bag, when the partner was chosen for secondary. BOTH people got pulled off to the side and escorted away. Bet it took at least an hour to get that straightened out.

It truly is a big problem for those of us that fly a lot and solo. One big reason I don't have a purse. And if they rip off the laptop, would definitely be a loss, but it is insured and I am sure I have a back up/zip drive with all the info someplace other than in the laptop bag.

You were very fortunate. Seabourn TA cruise Fall, 2008????

I have one of the Eagle Creek leg safes. I wear it around my upper calf, and it has no metal zippers. It's invisible under clothing, not as well-known as a money belt, and doesn't get seperated from me or noticed going through security.
