You can go on a trip sponsored by the Cabrillo Marine Museum (depending on your dates):

These companies also run whale watching trips:

If you are renting a car, you could also visit the Point Vicente Interpretive center where you can often see them from shore. There is an official whale count station here. The exhibits there are great at the newly reconstructed center.

The Point Vicente Interpretive Center is located at 31501 Palos Verdes

Drive West at the end of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and is open daily

from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Tel: 562-377-5370. http://www.losserenos.org/

That time of year you are most likely to see California gray whales in San Pedro, and also near Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta, although you can also sometimes see blue whales, pilot whales, or even the occasional right whale in the Cabo area. You can occasionally see some when you are on the first or last day at sea if you are lucky.

I have not used any of these companies personally. I live in San Diego, and usually go with the Birch Aquarium (I am a member) if I go on a whale watching trip, although I have also taken the Californian a couple times (a sailing ship out of San Diego) as well.
