Spirit Review 12/2-9 from the Pollyanna!!

This is going to be very long...pictures will be posted soon, but I took over 500 of them...it may take some time.

Dec 1st...We are on our way....DH got off work early on Saturday, deck 1...by 3pm we are on I-55 heading south. Spent the night at a motel in Hammond, la. The next morning, we plugged the GPS (with the address to the cruise terminal). The little voice said "41 miles to your destination". That little voice wasn't kidding, it directed us..with ease..the final direction was "turn left...in .5 miles turn right at destination"...we made the turn and there a guy, directing other cruisers into the parking lot for the Eratos cruise terminal. NCL uses the Julia St terminal, but the parking entrance in at the Eratos terminal. The directed us to the 3rd floor where the porters were waiting to take our luggage. Nothing could have been easier...a porter with a wheeled dolly was with us by the time we had the trunk open. we were driving off to the 5th floor to park. We took the elevator down to the 2nd floor, they checked out ID and tickets ... directed us to the main room. When asked, we told them we were Latitude members and were directed to that line.

The check-in area was one big building with area divided off, some people had checked in and were waiting in the holding area, with a snack counter with food for purchase...The Latitude line had no one in it, we went to the front, waited for less then 5 mins before it was our turn, the non-latitude line had about 50 people...but they had to wait for US!!! (that was fun)

Usually we are late getting to our cruises, this was the 1st we got to enjoy a early check in. After we got our sign/sail card, we went over to wait to be called (blue 2) that took (maybe) 3 mins. Total time from dropping off the luggage, parking the car and getting on the ship was less then 30 mins. There were signs all over the ship about not being able to get into the cabins until after 2pm. We went up the buffet, walked though it and out to the open seating on the fantail behind the buffet area.. as more people came on the ship this area stayed quiet, it was open to the beautiful weather, got to watch the ship traffic on the Mississippi

Got into our cabin just before 2pm...everything was ready and clean!!!

We dropped off our luggage and went exploring. Found our 1st piece of luggage at our cabin's door, around 3pm. It was the carry-on I had packed with sodas and water. The next piece came around 4pm and the last one showed up just after 5pm. After unpacking, we were to the casino for their "Welcome aboard" party. Free fruit punch, signed up the a new casino-at-sea card. We did check out the sail-a-way party around the pool, music, more food...except for the band and a few crew members, we didn't see any organized activities. The ship didn't leave new Orleans until after 6pm, (they were still fueling...since it was right under our balcony..we could watch it) when the ship did leave the dock, it was dark...too dark to see anything. Our meals were quick snacks at the buffet...we were too busy checking out the ship. We ate at the buffet twice that night, a little bit here and a little bit there.

Cruising down the Mississippi, the fog caught up with us. During most of the night we could hear the many fog horns, from our ship and others in the area. A quick look out the balcony, after midnight, showed we were still cruising through the lower area where the Mississippi meets the Gulf of Mexico

We were surprised to see that it takes that long for the ship to get to the gulf?

While the fog was thick all night, the morning was beautiful. DH went off for his early morning adventure. He did a couple of laps on deck 7. (deck 12 has a track for running/walking, deck 7 is walking only ). We met for breakfast at the buffet...

don't get caught standing in the lines...there are several different stations..walk around and see where everything is. Omelets were toward the rear..away from the normal buffet lines, waffles were on the other side. Breads across the back. (There are 2 lines for omelet, one has 2 grills...that line goes faster) The ice tea is awful, very bitter....I didn't hear any complaints about the coffee, but it looked very dark.

Our day was very busy, I did a lot of walking around to take photos of the ship and try to catch- up with everyone. The daily had a CC gathering listed for 10:30 at t\Henry's pub. I knew the roll call had not set-up a meet and greet, but i went to check it out..no one was there. It was a nice idea, but with the pre-arranged meeting for the buffet area at 3pm and this one listed in the daily, it was confusing. At the 3pm meeting, there was a few of us from the roll call. (I met a couple of others in the casino later that night). This roll call was very quiet, not many of us.

We got reservations at La Trattoria for 8:30, but when we checked at 5:30 they could take us right then. Glad they could, neither of us had eaten since breakfast !! The meal was well presented, well served and tasty. The cheesecake could have been sweeter, but the meal, itself was very nice. I started with the Mozzarella Caprese , DH has the Prosciutto a Melone...then we had the Cotolella de Pollo and Vegetarian Manicotto. The Manicotto was vcry good, but the chicken in the Cotolella was better.

The show was "Songs of Broadway", the 1th thing I noticed was how young everyone was. The new NCL troupe of singers/dancers don't have the maturity that the Jean Ryan dancers had, but the productions was very nice and COLOFUL costumes. The lead females singers, each, had strong voices. The "not-so- newlywed" game was fun, not risque as some I have seen. We missed the 70s dance party and a few other things...just got too exhausted.

Tuesday (is must be Roatan): As we approached Roatan, we could see storms over the islands. I hope some of my photos show up. You could see the heavy rain, at one point you could not see the island. The ship goes around to the docks...the boat with the pilot comes along side. A harbor (Harbour in Roatan) boat patrols along the ship as we dock. This boat had a pilot and a gunner. The gunner was 1 guy sitting with a rifle in his lap. After we were cleared by Roatan customs, they started making annoucements. We didn’t have any tours planned. As we got off the ship, had our pictures taken..we stopped to listen and watch the entertainers. The area around the dock is dirty, narrow streets. Many of the stores are just tables set in the yard of homes. Every few feet someone will ask if you want a taxi or a tour. Don’t let it bother you, it’s life for these people.

I would recommend getting away from the dock area. We enjoyed walking around, looking in the little shops...seeing life as it really is. Other could be upset by the vendors getting in your face. I just smiled and said "no, thanks" and kept walking. No one was rude or upset if you walked away...just do it with a smile.

We did hear that some of the tours were delayed getting started, leaving people shorted on their time snorkeling or whatever.

Dinner was at Gardens: (menu link - http://travel.webshots.com/photo/2757932040100731960OBFsQf)

We were seated quickly, had our order taken within a few minutes. Dh had the Egg Rolls to started and I had the Tomato Bisque...both were good. For Entrees, he had the Coq au Vin, this had to be the biggest serving of any food I have ever seen on a cruise ship. A HUGE serving...the aroma was the greatest thing ever. He didn’t share any of this, but said it was outstanding. I had the Veal Scaloppini and loved it. Orange sherbet for dessert. The whole meal took less the an hour, but there was only 2 of us and we don’t linger over coffee.

Wednesday: it was Guatemala..Santo Tomas de Castilla. The ship docks at a working freight port..it's not pretty. There is a building, near by, with local entertainment, shopping and food. Walking outside of the dock area would not be something I would recommend. It's a long ways to the real town and, except for a few vendors sitting by the street, not much to see. We did the Quiraqua Archaeological Explorer...TAKE BUG SPRAY!!! The drive is a long drive, (over an hour each way)but it's interesting to see the country side. It was a interesting bus drive and not for the faint-hearted. Our tour guide was Carmen, she was very good, but her English is not always easy to understand.

The bus was in excellent shape, the air conditioner worked well. Carmen gives a good tour, doesn't hurry the group...we enjoyed her. The Quiraqua is a interesting area...it does have a ball court from the Mayan days, as well as some excellent examples of their stelleas..carved limestones. We were glad this tour was before Belize, we got a good beginning understanding of the culture before the tour the next day. The only bad thing, I am VERY sensitive to bug bites. Others were bit worse then i was, we saw people with skin so scratched up that they were bleeding. I got bite around my knees and ankles, before we sprayed with OFF!! 4 days later and my ankles are just starting to look normal. I am just glad I saw the sale of "Deep woods off" for 70% off, we shared it with others on our tour. Don't miss out on this experience, just be prepared...this is a jungle!! The bus was clean and comfortable, air conditioning well very well. The walkways around the site were uneven, rocky and not recommended for anyone with mobility problems.

When we got back to the ship, we started to walk over to the building to do some shopping. I suggested going back to the ship for lunch..DH said if he does that he is not getting off again...I said "ok with me". Lunch on the ship was very good. (Never made it shopping).

DO NOT MISS the send-a-way. As the time, for the ship to leave, gets close...cars start pulling up to the area. Lights flashing, horns honking. Emergency vehicles will have the emgergency lights going.

A big group of people start to form and starts to get loud. They were singing, dancing and more. This went on for an hour, until the ship left the docks. (video will be posted soon)

That night was the Second City Comedy Troupe, they were good but not great. Dinner was at the buffet. This was the night I discovered the dessert crepe station. The best discovery I made on the ship for the whole cruise. The guy behind the grill become my best friend (but I never learned his name) The hot crepe..a few bananas slices, some pinapple, a few manderian oranges... drizzled with chocolate and raspberry sauces.. The a quick run to the ice cream station.

love these font changes...NOT!!!

Belize: This was what i had been looking forward to. Understanding that Belize is well knows for it's reefs, I choose to go Lamanai...so glad we did. Our tour guide was Jewel...a fun and witty lady. It started early, meeting in the Stardust theater at 7:45. by 8:15 we were on the tender heading into the port. Getting on the tender was the easiest ever, no waves, no wind... leaves from deck 3, you wak out to a platform and step onto the tender. It only took a few minutes to get everyone together, the tour guides were there with signs for their tours. In 10 minutes we were on the bus and off we went. Only 29 people on this tour. The bus was a mess, i don't mean dirty, i mean: falling apart. Our driver was excellent and didn't do any of the scary stuff the one in Santo Tomas did. Where I was sitting, there was a big indention in the cushion...very hard to get comfortable. But Jewel kept us interested and time went fast. It's 45 mins to an hour on the bus, before you get to the small boat harbor. Here there are restrooms and a few vendors. A short break and they start loading the boat. These are high speeds boats, much more comfortable then the bus was. They stop in areas for some wildlife viewing. We saw a couple of small (baby) crocs (I don't mean the shoes), saw a Night Owl, very tiny bird...some bats, more birds...including the ones that "walks on water". The site of Lamanai is different from some I have seen pictures of. This one is in the Jungle, the different temples/sites are not in the open but surrounded and covered by the trees. After another potty break, it's a long walk around the site. If walking is a problem...DO NOT take any tours to this site. It's over 1 ½ miles of walking in mud, up/down stone steps, over tree roots. My DH was impressed that I made the tour without a trip or injury!! To me, this area is breathtaking...very Indiana Jones. It was worth the "out of breath" route you take. The rides back (on the boat) was very fast..no stops, barely even slowing down. We got back to the boat with less then a ½ hour before final boarding. It was a very LONG day.

After cleaning up, dinner was at the buffet...I love the buttered pasta, the chicken was excellent. For my treat, I had another crepe...I was a Happy Camper!!!

Tonite DH was in the "Weakest Link"...He got voted off toward the end. Especially when they found out he knew most of the answers. He really wanted to win the key chain, but he got a address book for his troubles.

Cozumel: This was our beach break day. We had reservations at Nachi Cocom...$49 pp for food/drinks/pool/wonderful beach and our personal space under their thatched shady spots. You book it on-line, paying a deposit..the rest you pay in cash (only) when you get there. The taxi ride is $15 per taxi...if you have a group going..it's still $15.

As he was driving, our driver was telling us how much we were going to enjoy it, how great the beach was. Nachi Cocom limits the number of people to 100 for the day. This day they had all 100, but it was never crowded. Plenty of room to spread out and enjoy your day. Never had to worry about out "stuff" or feel like we had to hide it. This beach doesn't get anyone who doesn't belong there. For more money you can rent a wave runner, go snorkeling, para sailing or whatever. DH had a massage, a private thatched area by the pool. The prices are $40 for ½ hour or $65 for an hour. He did an hour and said it was EXCELLENT. Since i haven't lived in a beach area for a couple of years, i enjoyed my sun-worshiping The drinks were good, not lacking on the alcohol. The food was great, we had the nachos, the chicken tacos (what we would call taquitos..but bigger) and the grilled shrimp. With our all-inclusive, we could have had more food and drinks. You are allowed a 3 course meal, either at 1 time or spread out during the day.

The pool was not heated, the sand on the beach is not powdered sand...but not rocky either. By 3pm we were ready to leave. I had just gotten our stuff together, when our server came over and said he had called a taxi for us. (without being asked) this is not where i would recommended for people who want a lot of water sports...for good snorkeling you need to go out on a boat for an 1 hour or more. But for anyone who wants to relax, drink, eat and get waited on...this is a great place to go.

Did the Gardens again...this was Loster night!! DH had the Duck for a appetizer. I don't eat duck, but he said it was great...since he was humming as he ate, i believe him. I started with the Seafood cocktail, except for being small portions, it was very good. The pumpkin/ginger bisque was a little stong for my taste..not something I would order all the time. He had the Beef Wellington and I had the Lobster. This time the Lobster wins. The Beef Wellington was good, but the Lobster was excellent. It was a whole lobster tail (not Maine Lobster) grilled for a light smokey taste, it was served while still hot and tender. The tomato risotto was tasty. For dessert I had the creme brulee, this had a under layer of fudge!! WOW, was it good. Alexandra and her assistant (sorry, I didn't get her name) were great, excellent service...good food all in less then an hour.

We missed the "super show" in the Stardust, we came in at the end of the "Fountains". We are so sorry we missed the start of the Fountains. The Super Show was a family of acrobats, but they ended the show with the crew doing "The Fountains". We knew we missed something great by the laughter. We did get to see the crew's talent night (right after the Super Show). Loved the tradiational dancing some of the crew did, dances from their homelands.

Saturday: Sea day...

After sleeping in and then breakfast at the buffet...it was bingo time.

Bingo: $29 for paper sheets, 6 cards to a page. $59 for the machines that plays 36 cards, $89 for 72 cards per game and then $129 played 144 cards per game. The morning cover-all went to someone with a bonus game card, something they gave those that bought the machine games, a single sheet per game.

Jackpots were usually around $200, I got close once. DH did the Hold 'em tourney. I wandered around, got lunch at the buffet (they have a station for made-to-order sandwiches..I like the ones they had already made up)

Bingo in the afternoon was for the big jackpot..but had a small crowd (with one very noisy person who was distrubing the whole group). I got close twice, but didn't win anything. Except for the jackpot cover-all, but money stayed under $200 for each game.

Sometime, during the day, I went to the room and had a scare. I was packing and turned around when i noticed something behind me. It was a towel monkey hanging from a hook near the bathroom door. He was so cute, but I wasn't expecting him. Between the packing and the last night at the casino, we didn't do much. Bedtime was midnight, we never heard a sound from them picking up the luggage.

Disembarking:

the easiest ever!!! slept until the annoucements at 7:30 woke us up. (it was not in the room, but we heard it from the hallway) We had tags for "orange" and knew from the schedule they gave us that it was going to be some time until we were called. Off to breakfast, came back and finished packing the carry-offs, DH took a small nap. At 8:15 they started calling the"express disembarking", that took an hour before they started calling the other colors. From then it was every 15 mins, we were called at 10:15. no crowds in the luggage pick-up area. Found our luggage easily, went to customs. We got directed straight through, went to the car and we were off.

Here's some misc information about the cruise and the Spirit:

passengers: this was not a overly friendly group of passengers. Many times we passed people and they would have even smile. Can't blame NCL for this and it didn't hurt our cruise...

crew: very friendly!! we never met our room stewards..but every request was taken care of, room was spotless the whole week. Buffet staff was TOPS! casino staff needs lessons, they could be nicer.

casino: 1 cent, 2 cent, nickels, quarters..and up. many multi-line video slots. Not too many jackpots. I saw one Royal Flush on a quarter poker machine. One $800 jackpot on a dollar slot. Crap table was a pain...dealers were on always nice, a couple of dealer had a hard time keeping up.. some players were rude, loud and stupid. they would argue with the payoffs, when they didn't even bet that number. The last night you can turn in your points. each point is worth a dollar toward your on-board account.

Bathrooms: the best ladies room are around the casinos. Over on the port side, under the Park West offices, they have some very few use. Near the Blue Lagoon, going toward the elevators (near the casinos) are more. Outside the theater, just the Galaxy of the Stars are others I saw.

Bed: our bed had a comfortable "pillow" top-type padding over the mattress. We didn't have to ask for an egg crate. You could feel the divide in the 2 beds, but it didn't bother us at all. The comforter was great, very cuddly.

Bathroom: raised tile floor with drains in the shower and under the sink. The handing shoe organizer was handy for the little extra "things". The only problem i have is adjusting the water temp. i like it hot, DH likes it luke warm. There is a bottle opener on the wall, just inside the door. The fish tile border was cute, gave the little rooms some color.

All the menus were exactly the ones posted before. I have some of them that I will put on my webshot page. Lobster night was NOT the 1st sea day, it was Friday. Did hear some say they got 1/2 price at a speciality restaurant, but I did see anything about that posted. We did eat at any of the surcharges, so we didn't care. DH would not go to the main dining in his shorts, but we did see others in shorts and jeans.

The Blue Lagoon was busy, breakfast, lunch or dinner ...even late night. It had the most waiting as any restaurant. Never saw a line at any of the main dining rooms, everyone was seated right away (that i saw).

The screens (around the ship) for the restaurants, are great. You could see what ones were filling up, how long (if any) of a wait. Many nights we saw that the surcharge restaurants didn't show full, we were going to check to see about a walk-out, but always found other things to do.

This is the first cruise/trip that DH has said he would repeat...that is really something. We loved the ship, the decor is outstanding. The lay-out is very easy. Both main dining rooms are on deck 6, most everything else is on deck 7(including casino), the asian surcharge restaurants, photo and other shops on deck 8. Deck 12 is well laid out, the pool area was never full. You could find lounge chair when ever you went there. For more sun, go to deck 12..less shade, still has bar service.

Okay, now I have to go to the grocery store, we have nothing in the refrig. If i missed anything I will add it later. Tonite I will start scanning the prices lists, menus, dailies..and much more.

Great review Cathi. Looks like we will have another good time on an NCL cruise ship. I did notice in the roll call area, that someone didn't care for his or her cruise. Seems like they were on the wrong ship. :)

I think that's an excellent way to put it. We enjoyed the ports, but we were on the wrong ship. My kids had a blast, but we were just a bit bored, and we found the ship to be a lot less fun and lively than our other cruises have been.

I was on this cruise too, and I can tell you that the vast majority of folks I talked to on board expressed that they were disappointed. My wife and I had a great time and didn't let it get us down, but there were definitely those who felt it didn't live up to their expectations.

My experience was much closer to Cathi's, though. Great cruise, great service, mostly (with a few exceptions) very good food, and a great itinerary. To be honest, my main complaint (if I ever get around to finishing my own review!) has to do with some of my fellow passengers!

Thanks for this! I love your detail. We did this itinerary in March of this year on the NCL Sun and had a very nice time. I too, was amazed how long it takes to get to the Gulf but really enjoyed the trip down the Mississippi. Isn't the send off in Guatamala the best! They are the nicest people and so appreciative. Thanks again for taking me back...

i sat next to one older lady...all she could say was "it wasn't like that on Holland American" or " it didn't used to be that way". i was talking to one guy (who was liking his cruise), we were talking about sodas/free drinks. i said next time i would get a soda card..just for the ease of it all. she started going on and on and on about how it "wasn't ever like that before". gee, my 1st cruise was 18 years ago, i hate the fact i could never find anything to drink..free..between meals. i had $50 to last the 3 days, could not afford a soda...searched the ship, high and low for anything to drink. then she started about the water, how it was brown coming her tap...i said this (holding up my glass) is tap water from my cabin...she didn't believe me!!! yes, the other passengers...some were royal pains, i don't think anything could please them and it wasn't just the older ones.

neither of my cabin's next door neighbors would smile or greet you when they saw you. even watching the fun of leaving santo tomas, he was frowning!!!

heard one lady telling a crew member how passport are still taking 9 months to get (WRONG!!). Another was saying that you can't drink the water out of the tap (again, WRONG!!)

i was at the restaurant reservations desk (taking photos of the menus) heard all types of stuff. the poor ladies were trying get people to understand, but when someone WANTS to get it wrong, they don't listen.

one person left sure that they needed reservations for the BUFFET?

i was laughing so hard, made eye contact with one of the nice ladies behind the desk and she was trying to not laugh. people just don't listen, do not want to listen and some don't want to have a good time.

one time, i heard someone telling their friends about dining...that they couldn't eat in the main dining rooms because they need reservations, etc. i did my normal thing, started talking loud enough that i knew they could hear me..telling my DH that you don't need reservations in the main dining, you could wear nice jeans, etc. even happen to mention that it was like our last cruise on NCL that we liked so much:D . BTW, these couples were standing under the reservations informations signs...and they still got it wrong.

Your review was fun to read, ok, the different fonts hurt a bit, lol.

As I noted on an earlier review, it is funny how people have almost opposite cruises. I think a lot has to do with who one has cruised with more often and just a positive attitude about life.

I missed the first sea day in your review, did you do one?

While we are doing more active shore excursions, I enjoyed hearing about the historical side of things in the ports you mentioned.

I have sailed from NOLA several times and one of the fun things is the long voyage to the Gulf, you can still use your cell phone and you see many crew/staff members out there talking late into the night on them. Though, you are correct, it is so dark and hard to see the land.

I look forward to seeing your pictures and all of the items you scan including the Freestyle Dailies. One other review mentioned they were bored, so I am anxious to see what things are planned. I found so many things that I wanted to do that overlapped on NCL. Perhaps I just enjoy things more like basketball free throw contests, art auctions (to learn, lol), the game shows, that I am never bored on NCL.

A lot also has to do with the passengers as you mentioned, many people need to stick with what they are familiar with. I will not cruise with Carnival again until they have anytime dining. To have to endure meals with people who you have nothing in common with was so hard.

Thank you again and I am glad you and your husband had an excellent time!

Is it possible that the cruise was quiet because of the time of year?

We will be on the Spirit in March and I am hoping it will be quiet sometimes.:D So I can sleep.

if you want quiet, get cabin 9636...no inside rooms across the hall. never passed anyone in the hallways, no extra noise. each side of us was a older couple. we were up before 6am, 3 morning in a row...just too much to see and do. by 10 am we were dragging. (did manage to stay in the casino until midnight most night). we had this deal with each other...no elevators!! i had to cheat twice for 3 floors, but coming back from belize..we did the stairs from deck 3 to deck 9 and then on to deck 12. even with swollen feet/ankles from those stupid bugs in guatemala.

Loved reading your review. The info about the crepe station is great. Thanks for taking the time to post such wonderful details.

Ask them to cook the crepes a little longer - half the time mine were still a bit cool, and they didn't taste as good as when they were heated better. The crepes were the highlight of the dinner buffet IMO.

Although we found the Spirit to have great food and room services, our vacation was a disappointent due to lound and profane young folks on deck 10 starboard. This bad conduct started on Sunday night and was repeated though Wednesday night. I called Security and one person was taken out of the room across from mine and the situation was calm after that. One woman was sceaming for help as she had been beaten. Don't know the outcome of this. The people on either side of us as well as the cabin attendants had to call Security during these three days. We are frequent cruisers on NCL and notified Guest Relations or our dissatisfaction but have not had a response.
