How dressy is dinner on NCL?

well Barb, I do believe we will probally book the Majesty-ofcourse we still can't do it for almost 2 weeks-as my hubby's new boss won't approve vacation time until after the first. But this sounds good for us and my hubby really wants to scuba dive in Bermuda.

Our last trip he just snorkled as he was not certified then-but he loved Jesse James there and I am sure he will book a scuba with them.

Kim, we still want to go to San Juan and Turk and Caicos but that will wait until 09 and as we learned the Solstice is as big as it is-we will probally go with HAL, as we just not heard enough positive things about Costa-besides the one Costa ship (Fortuna) is the size of the Solstice.

Hi there,

I noticed below your screen name it says "5,000+ club." What does that mean? Mine says "cool cruiser" like some others do.

Thanks.

That I spend way too much time here-it means I have made over 5000 posts.

Those that have made over 10,000 posts they call "blue ribbon cruiser" I think-look at Lois's posts. She is the only one I know who is in that catagory.

SSHHHH-

I'm at work right now.

LOL! yep!

Actually I looked up Lois and I was wrong-she doesn't have 10,000 posts- but I found another person that did and they are called a charter member when they make 10,000.

I wonder how long it will take for me to make charter member? LOL!

Oh my goodness, Momofmeg

May I make an off the ship dinner suggestion? In Hamilton there is a resturant at the Reef Hotel called Coconuts. The tables are in a side of a cliff (outside) that overlooks the ocean. It has by far been one of the the most incredible dining experiences we have ever had. The hotel is in Hamilton, but even if not in Hamilton a taxi ride where ever you are docked is within reach. If you do go however make a reservation before you leave home. There are not many tables and it books quickly. Let me temp you with a few pictures!

We could take the ferry to Hamilton. It used to be $5 a person or you could buy the 3 days pass for the busses and ferry. We bought the bus pass before but we still took taxis a couple of times-just because it was more convenient and we were not going far. (Hamilton to the beach)

  • 3 weeks later...

We were on the Gem in December and I have to admit, we felt completely overdressed in formal gowns. Although the occasion called for a more formal appearance, it was Norwegian and it was a 1-nighter.

One thing we did notice was that the older crowd (over 50) actually dressed in formal attire when attending dinner and a show but later dressed down for the casino. Other age groups were more casual and we actually saw several pair of blue jeans.

When we sail on the Sun in March, I will be packing plenty of Capris when we go.

I don't know what happened to Lois's posts, I think she used to have over 10,000. But it takes years (hopefully) to achieve that level. I know I was a little surprised when I reached the level, I wasn't even paying attention. I guess I'm on CC way more than I should be!

NCL is casual to the point of being a bit sloppy, in my very own opinion. The last time we sailed on NCL we had a wonderful time, clothes don't always make the experience better or worse. But, it's not a line I would concern myself with too much about having the perfect clothes.

I took what I considered to be semi-formal, black evening pants and a satin beaded jacket, so as not to stand out too much on formal night as too casual. To my surprise, I would have been amongst the most dressed up that I saw. I probably only saw 2-3 women in what I considered to be formal at all. Many women wore dresses, but they were what you would see in the office or Sunday school. Some wore long sundresses. Some wore black slacks with sparkles on their T-shirts. I don't think I saw a single man in a suit or wearing a tie.

I ended up wearing what I considered to be a nice outfit for dinner in one of the specialty restaurants and felt right at home in it. I saved my semi-formal clothing for the next night and was just a lot more dressed up than most. Not a problem for me.

I've never been to Bermuda, but I've read that they are not as casual even with their casual clothing as other islands. Don't they tend to dress very nice there?

KS, we ended up booking HAL Westerdam as we also wanted to go to Turk and Caicos. My hubby flew there 10 years ago and snorkled and loved it-and he has wanted to go back since he became certified for scuba diving, actually he wants to dive both places-He loved Bermuda for snorkling also.

We were looking at both islands and if he could have got away earlier we would have went on the Zuiderdam as I also wanted to go back to San Juan. When my hubby realized because of work he could not take off until April-then we were looking at the Majesty Bermuda cruise-but I found this April cruise on the Westerdam and we booked it. (no San Juan though)

We still may to a NCL Majesty Bermuda cruise but it will have to wait until 09 as our cruising budget is empty now. So we do get to dress up! our favorite topic here right? LOL!

On the cruisecritic post number thing-I notice yours just says 10,000 plus club-tell them you SHOULD be a charter member too! NOT FAIR! LOL! In 3000 more posts I want to be a charter member. LOL!

KS, Bermuda is a very nice island and much wealthier then the caribbean islands. People there you can tell have money and it seems to me thos ewith money usually dresses better so yes I believe you are right.

You would want to up it a notch dinnning in a restuarant there.

We took the Pride of Hawaii (NCLA) for our honeymoon cruise and I was surprised at how much MORE people seemed to dress up than people on Royal Caribbean, actually. I was expecting people to be very casual and that wasn't the case on formal night for sure. (At least in the dining room and specialty restaurants).

It's not really a concern of mine, no big deal.

I Think that with the freestyle cruising you can be free to dress anyway that is comfortable for you... I work with kids 5 days a week and I am leaving on my cruise in a few weeks on NCl and I will be dressed up everynight. (I start buying all my dresses at a second hand shop when I book my cruise months before:) ) My Husband doesn't care to dress up everynight, but there is only one or two nights that he will have to wear his suit, the other nights will just be tie nights...

The dress code was disappointingly casual - too the point of being sloppy at times - there was one "optional formal" night - some people dressed beautifully but most just wore their clothes they had obviously had on all day (maybe for many days) - it was my first cruise and the casual part was too casual - not what i expected from a cruise experience - thought dressing nicer for dinner, and at times more formally, was a nice part of a cruise - i didn't choose this NCL line or itinerary - was just a tag-along - but in june on RCCL for alaska the dress code is spelled out and i think i will like that better - donna

Donna, you would probally like Celebrity better. Most dress very well-even on casual nights.

Even though we decided against the NCL crusie this year-we still may do this cruise next year-but because of our being able to go to Bermuda from a port close to where we live.

I have a question about dressing summery on a Carribean cruise.

We are traveling with my 2 yr old. I'm worried about him being cold in the dining room in just a polo and long pants. (Is this even a valid concern?)

But, it's January and all the long sleeve shirts that fit him are very wintery looking (dark burgandy, navy, only match wool pants etc)

We don't buy "spring" long sleeved shirts because they don't get worn where we live.

Any suggestions on how to dress him?

We are on the Jewel next week.

I would bring him a little jacket to wear and it would not hurt to pack a couple of winter outfits-if there is a winter storm-the caribbean can be very cool. On both of our winter crusies (Dec.and Feb.) this happened and I found my shorts were not warm enough in the daytime as it did not even make 70-so I wore my dinner slacks alot.
